Itinerary

Your voyage through ancient Provence begins by meeting your knowledgeable guide and sit back for the short ride to Nîmes, where your tour kicks off. Along the way, learn a bit about the city’s Roman roots, so well preserved that Nîmes is considered one of Europe’s most important historic cities.

In Nîmes, immerse yourself in story as your guide explains the city’s main monuments, some of the most impressive in France. See Maison Carrée, a remarkably preserved temple built to honor the Emperor. Visit the Arènes de Nîmes (Nîmes Arena), a formidable Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century.

Your tour will then take you to the nearby Pont du Gard, a UNESCO-listed aqueduct on the Gardon River. Considered an ancient work of art, this three-tiered construction is the highest of all elevated Roman aqueducts.

To conclude, you will visit one of the best-preserved theatres from the Roman time - the Roman Theatre of Orange

Your fun and educational tour will end in Avignon.

Wonderful tour of the Roman era relics in the lower Rhône River region. All were interesting to see in person. Don’t miss visiting the natural spring in Nîmes with its Roman ruins in a beautiful setting.

We had a very knowledgeable guide named Bastien. As an English speaking guide he has an outstanding mastery of the language. He was very pleasant. The whole group was very satisfied with the Roman sites on this tour. I would highly recommend it. Well worth the money

Roman sites with Jeremy

Michael_S, May 2023
Jeremy was very knowledgeable of the entire region, climate, geology, history, etc. He took great care of everyone, was relaxed and very personable! One caution: the van was not comfortable for 2 passengers in the front seat, especially for larger people!!

Interesting sites

Susan_M, Apr 2023
Highlights for us were seeing the Roman Antic theatre in Orange and La Maison Carre, an ancient Greek temple in Nimes and the Arc de Triompe in Orange. The Colisseum in Nimes was disappointing as it looked grander in photos I had seen previously. We also could not walk all the way around due to restoration work being done- half an hour would have been plenty for this. The visit to Uzes, a medieval village was interesting but most of time spent trying to find our way back to meeting point; was very windy as on top of mountain. On a trip the previous day we saw the Pont du Gard, the ancient Roman aqueduct and that is definitely worth a visit- we elected to not see it on this tour and so finished the tour a bit earlier. The Guide was a good driver but she did not give us much history or information about any of the places, things we were going to see. She could have been more informative we felt and all in all the tour we looked forward to the most was the most disappointing. All the sites are worth visiting but think if you rent a car you would do just as well.

Response from Host, May 2023

Dear Susan, Concerned about the satisfaction of our customers and with the aim of improving our services, we pass on your remarks to our guide. It is not always easy to fully satisfy a heterogeneous group, with different requirements during guided tours, comments on monuments. Our guides do their best, and sometimes the circumstances do not help in total satisfaction, and we are not responsible (wind, works...). We thank you for your understanding. Best regards, TEAM A LA FRANCAISE

Day of marvelous sites and disasters

Roberta_H, Oct 2022
The highlights: sites included, people in this group of 8, the place we chose for lunch, and the weather. It was soon apparent our driver/guide Christian and the group had very different expectations. He expected to drive, drop off with instructions, and return. The group expected a tour guide. He was knowledgeable and friendly; he wanted to please so he finally accepted our insistence that he guide us and stay with us. He had not done the necessary planning for this full day tour. He had poor sense of time and pace of this elderly group. Parking was a huge issue and he scraped his and another car in a space too small for the vehicle. Many disasters.

Response from Host, Oct 2022

dear Roberta, We understand your disappointment but our regular tours are not private tours: on our site everything is well explained, there are stops in several villages with the guide and others in free time without the guide. Our guide Christian has done his best to satisfy you and adapt to your request but this is not what is planned on this tour, which has created some disappointments. However, we take your comments into account and thank you. best regards A LA FRANCAISE

Roman sires

Maree R, Jan 2019
We felt safe with our driver/guide Caroline. She communicated throughout the tour about the sites we were to visit in preparation for our free time at the stops. We also learned about the surrounding areas as we travelled through this region. A pleasant and informative tour which we enjoyed.

My son and I took this wonderful and informative tour with guide Julian. Since it was during Dec.and we were the only ones booked for that day, it was like a private tour. Julian was an excellent driver and always made you feel safe. The Amphitheater in Nimes was such an incredible sight and although there are many, we were told that this is the best preserved one. On from there we visited the quaint town of Uzes and were given time to just stroll around the town and take in it's quaint beauty on our way to Pont Du Gard. The Aqueduct was the pieces de resistance and was breathtaking. Julian explained a bit about the history and then gave us tickets to enter on our own. We had the time to take it all in and marvel at the brilliant and innovative Roman design. We really enjoyed this tour and would recommend Julian as a guide for anymore who visits the magical walled city of Avignon.

sewingpmt, Nov 2017
We were very pleased with our guide and the tour itself. There was a group of 6 of us, all of whom had seen Pont du Gard, so the driver agreed to spend more time in Uzes which was a beautiful village.

Lorna A, Oct 2017
We didn't see all the Roman sites listed for Nimes Uzès was an attractive town we found a great patisserie and this was our second visit to Pont du Garde, but from the other side of the river which didn't have as good a view.

Martha C, Oct 2017
We had an enjoyable day on this tour. The guide was informative and very supportive. He attended to us, and made sure everything went smoothly. I think his name was Sylvan. My only suggestions for this tour are that 1 it could be longer, and 2 more time could be given to Uzes--perhaps time for lunch in this charming town. The tour did not disappoint!

We had a wonderful guide, Remy. Unfortunately could not go into the staudium in Nimes it was a,holiday. We did see a great film in the Greek Theatre. The PONT DE GARE was wonderful. We were very lucky to have very pleasant people on the tour. It was worth the money.

vanessadeguz, Aug 2017
A must for better understanding of Roman influence/impact in France, if not for the sheer awe-inspiring Pont du Gard aqueduct. We then joined the afternoon tour of Luberon area for wine and olive oil tasting. Guide had a great handle on the history and culture of the region.

The tour company is really good...

Gina O, Mar 2017
The tour company is really good. Marc was a good driver and excellent guide. Nimes surprised me, it was a lot bigger and more beautiful than I expected. The aquaduct was good to see.

If you do not wish to go through the hassle of renting a car, this tour is absolutely essential. Our tour guide Anne was very well-versed in the entire region and gave us a wonderful picture of what we were seeing on our way to the sites. The Colosseum in Nimes is amazing, although I wish we would have had a bit more time to see the Temple. Our next stops Uzes was well worth the visit and Anne explained its importance as a major Bishopric. At our last stop at Pont du Gard we were afforded enough time to walk around the massive aqueduct and and appreciate what the Romans had done 2000 years ago to bring fresh water to their communities. A wonderful trip.

Emma M, Apr 2016
I didn't end up going on this tour. They called to say that there were no other bookings so I was moved onto another, I was then late for that one due to train delays. I called them and they moved me to the next day. Was a wonderful experience, Remy was an excellent guide. Loved every second of it.

Margaret A, Apr 2016
Our tour guide was great. He gave us excellent advice about how to spend our time, answered our many questions and offered great background on the sites. Like all tours of this type, it can seem rushed but it is a great way to see these types of interesting places if you don't want to drive yourself and have limited time--the tour makes great use of the time you have.

Robert W, Nov 2015
Description said guide would walk with us. Not true. Basically just drove us around, gave us a ticket or pointed us in a direction. Arrived at Pont Du Gard too late to see the informational video.

Our particular tour did not cover...

Anthony C, Oct 2015
Our particular tour did not cover some of the attractions as listed, in fact the only attraction that we saw in Nimes was the Amphitheater. Too much time was allowed in the Amphitheater and also in Uzes, where we were just left to wander the town after a very brief descriptive overview of the main sights. What we did see was very good and that added to the frustration of not seeing more of the sights in Nimes. The Pont du Gard, an exceptional engineering feat, was a highlight of the tour.
