This was an amazing experience!! I appreciated that it had different options within one booking as it accommodated multiple people. Aaron did a great job of dropping everyone off and picking them up at the appropriate times and locations. Boris was riding with us and the two of them did an awesome job of answering all of our questions. I can’t recommend them enough!

Greatest Original (OG) village - not commercialized

Gina_N, Mar 2026
This is an ORIGINAL VILLAGE, with actual tribes people living in it. Buildings are original and old. You get a great sense of the passion the Māori people have for their culture and sharing about it. The “other tour” or village is just built for commercial use to sell to tourists. But thie experience is TRUE and with original buildings. I highly recommend this TRUE to the Māori people tour. My tour guides Mother was born in this village and his father was from a tribe at a different village. He was humorous, humble and had a vast amount of knowledge. The ceremony with the traditional Haka song and dance was AMAZING! I LOVE watching the Rugby Haka performances before each match, but it was moving for them to give the explanation and story behind it. Especially why it’s important to stick the tongue out. Lol The love song they sang after was so beautiful that it brought me to tears. Great singing voices and moving love story…I’m surprised Disney hasn’t picked up this story and made an animated movie! LOVE THE VILLAGE, can’t wait to come back and eat some more fresh made corn from the streaming pools. Best made corn!

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you so much for such a heartfelt and thoughtful review. It really means a lot to read this. You’ve captured exactly what makes the village so special. It’s not a staged or recreated experience — it’s a real, living community, and the people who share it with visitors do so with genuine pride and passion for their culture. Hearing that this came through so strongly for you is wonderful. It’s also great to hear how much the storytelling and performances resonated with you. The haka, especially when you understand the meaning behind it, can be incredibly powerful, and that love song has a way of staying with people long after the day ends. The connection, the emotion, and the history behind it all really do make it something unforgettable. And we love that you mentioned the corn — it’s a simple thing, but it’s such a unique and authentic part of the experience (and yes, it really is delicious!). Thank you again for sharing this. We’re so glad the day meant so much to you, and we’d love to welcome you back again in the future.

Don’t miss Whakarewarewa! But maybe not with Expedigo!

Rosalynn_W, Mar 2026
The village experience was stellar! It is a must do! Our driver for the day was terrible. When told we couldn’t hear him in the back of the van, he said he couldn’t use the microphone and we were going to see the sites which is what we paid for. He was very disorganized with our schedules and stopped randomly. The spa was beautiful but the staff checking us in was rude and unhelpful. Just not giving us enough information as we arrived. We saw other groups getting a pre-tour and explanation of the pools, but we were told nothing. It was also unclear how to choose which experience of those listed. We thought we would get to choose our activities from the description, but were told we were assigned to the spa. Would have love to see redwoods.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re really glad to hear that you enjoyed the village experience — it truly is a special place and we’re pleased that part of the day stood out for you. That said, we’re very sorry to hear about the rest of your experience. John is actually one of our more experienced drivers, so hearing that the day felt disorganised and that communication wasn’t clear is genuinely surprising and disappointing for us. Please accept our sincere apologies, especially regarding the microphone. Guests in the back of the vehicle should always be able to hear the guide clearly, and this is certainly not the experience we want any of our guests to have. We will certainly be speaking with John and reinforcing the importance of clear communication and keeping the day running smoothly for everyone. We’re also sorry to hear about your experience on arrival at the spa. The facilities there are wonderful, but guests should absolutely be given a clear explanation of the different pools and how everything works. We will pass this feedback along to the spa team so they are aware of your experience. Just to clarify, the spa activity was the option selected when the booking was made through Viator, which is why that was the experience arranged for you on the day. However, we completely understand how the options might not always feel clear, and we’re always happy to help explain or answer questions before the tour so guests know exactly what to expect. Thank you again for your honest feedback. We truly appreciate you bringing these points to our attention as it helps us improve the experience for future guests.

Best way to experience the Maori culture!

Melissa_M, Mar 2026
Highly recommend it! We did the live maori village with spa and they were both excellent. The tour driver was knowledgeable and seemed to know the area well, he was also very informative. Plan to stay a couple days in Rotorua to truly enjoy the experience. The drive was long and we felt rushed being there only for a few hours, wished we had more time to explore. Overall, one of the highlights of our trip.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you for the thoughtful review! We’re really glad to hear the day was one of the highlights of your trip. The Living Māori Village and the spa experience in Rotorua are both pretty special, so it’s great to hear you enjoyed them. Rotorua has such a unique atmosphere with its geothermal activity and strong Māori culture, and many guests say the same thing — that they wish they had a little more time there. It’s also nice to hear your driver helped make the journey enjoyable. Our guides love sharing what they know about the area along the way, especially on the longer drives. Thank you as well for the recommendation, and for sharing your advice about staying a couple of days in Rotorua. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us.

Sights and sounds of the Maori

Robert_E, Mar 2026
It's a long day!! Meeting at 6:00 am. Matt was our driver. He was very engaging giving us on going commentary as we drove for almost three hours to get to the village. His headset microphone was muffled and the clarity of what he was saying suffered. That's about the only negative. The village is a living working real community which my husband and I found delightful. You really see the people and how they have created their homes by adapting to their environment of the steam spewing volcanic activity for cooking, bathing and everyday activities. There was beautiful presentation of the Maori culture through their songs and dance. Before heading to the village, we stopped at an area where the pools of volcanic magma flow. You can hear the roar coming from the inner earth and see the volcanic action that has been happening for millions of years. Amazing!! My husband and I give it two thumbs up. Just be prepared for a very long day.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thanks for taking the time to share such a detailed review. It really is an early start and a long day, so we appreciate you being up for the adventure! Matt will be glad to hear you enjoyed his commentary along the way, and we’ll pass on the note about the microphone clarity as well. So glad you both enjoyed the village experience. It’s a very special place and seeing how the community lives alongside the geothermal activity is something many people find fascinating. The cultural performances are always a highlight too. Great to hear the geothermal stop left an impression as well — it’s pretty incredible to witness that kind of natural power up close. Thanks again for joining us and for the two thumbs up! 👍👍

The best tour we have done!

Jess_V, Mar 2026
We have done many tours over the last two weeks and this was by far the most enjoyable! David was a very great host, full of interesting stories!

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thanks so much for the kind words! That really means a lot, especially after doing so many tours over the past couple of weeks. David will be very happy to hear you enjoyed his stories — he loves sharing them along the way. So glad this was a highlight of your trip!

Great experience! :)

Naufa_A, Feb 2026
This tour was great value for your buck. David from Expedigo was a great guide and provided great commentary and stories! We did the Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland by ourselves (about an hour) where we saw the champagne pool and the devil's bath). We also did a guided Māori cultural experience tour at the Wakarewarewa village - learnt a lot of the people, history and got to eat corn made in the hot pools! David was also kind enough to do some additional stops (e.g. Waiotapu mudpools). Tour operator also had good conmunication and answered questions prior to the trip & around the time of pick-up. Would recommend :)

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Thank you so much for the lovely review! I’m really glad you felt the tour was great value and that you enjoyed your day with David — he’ll be stoked to hear your kind words about his stories and commentary. It sounds like you made the most of it! Waiotapu is such a surreal place, and the Champagne Pool and Devil’s Bath never disappoint. I love that you also got to experience Wakarewarewa and try the corn cooked in the hot pools — such a unique (and tasty!) way to connect with the culture. I’m also pleased the extra mudpool stop and our communication before the trip made everything smooth and easy for you. Thanks again for coming along and for the recommendation — it really means a lot to us!

Rotorua Māori Day

Barbara_W, Feb 2026
We were in a group of 10 from a variety of countries. Our driver/guide Matt told us about different areas of Auckland as we drove through the countryside. We learned some Māori words, prefixes and suffixes. And we learned some Māori history and culture. The guided tour through the Māori village was fascinating, and the performance was entertaining. We then took a short hike through a beautiful redwood forest followed by lunch in the town and the ride back to our hotel.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share this — it sounds like a really special day. We’re so pleased you enjoyed travelling with Matt and learning about Auckland, te reo Māori, and local history along the way. The Māori village visit and performance are always a highlight, so it’s great to hear you found them fascinating. Ending the day with a walk through the redwood forest and a relaxed lunch is a favourite of ours too. Thanks again for joining us, and we hope the memories stay with you long after your trip.

Awesome Tour!

Craig_H, Jul 2025
The Rotorua Māori Village tour was truly a highlight of our trip, made even better by our wonderful guide, Jason. His calm, easygoing nature and wealth of knowledge made the journey enjoyable and informative, especially when it came to the local wildlife and beautiful scenery. We were especially moved by the visit to the Living Māori Village. Daniel's passion and deep understanding of Māori traditions, customs, and everyday life brought everything to life in such a meaningful way. He helped us gain a new appreciation for the respectful and harmonious way the Māori people live with the land. Although we’ve been to Yellowstone in the U.S., the Thermal Wonderland here was something entirely different—and completely unforgettable. We highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a rich cultural experience paired with stunning natural beauty.
