Itineraries for Your Trip to Messina
2 Days in Messina for First Timers
With its busy train station and port, Messina is an important gateway to Sicilyfor many travelers. At first glance, the city might not seem as charming as some more well-known destinations in Italy, but looks can be deceiving. After years of bypassing the old town while bound for other Sicilian destinations, I finally spent some time getting to know Messina’s cultural sights—and I was well-rewarded for the effort.
Though much of its history was destroyed by the 1908 earthquake and World War II bombs, there are plenty of gems to explore, plus a vibrant dining scene. My guide on how to spend two days in Messina will ensure you don’t miss out on this sleeper hit of a city.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a cooking class with a local host.
Daytime temperatures soar in Messina each summer, so wear a hat and light clothing to stay cool.
Get your bearings and cover the must-see attractions in Messina in just a few hours with a walking tour on your first morning. Stroll past the Church of the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani, marvel at the bell tower and astronomical clock flanking the city cathedral, and snap photos of the Fountain of Neptune as you learn about the city’s history and culture from your guide.
After a morning of history and culture, break up the day with an excursion to the dramatic Alcantara Gorges at the foot of Mt. Etna. Sitting just an hour south of the city, the Alcantara River Park offers a welcome respite from the heat and chaos of downtown Messina. Choose a canyoning or bodyrafting adventure in the crystalline water or zip across the lava-rock landscape on an ATV tour.
Turn your attention to Messina’s food scene by ending your first day with a local cooking class led by a passionate home cook or professional chef. Discover the secrets to creating classic pasta dishes and other beloved Sicilian recipes, then savor a leisurely dinner featuring the specialties you’ve prepared, served with local wines. Most classes provide a printed copy of the recipes as a unique souvenir.
Set off early to take on Mt. Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Explore the moon-like lava fields and climb to the summit craters safely with a guided excursion, or follow the trails along the lower slopes on foot with a hiking guide to avoid having to read a map. You can also opt to cover the slopes on board a 4-wheel drive for a less strenuous outing.
After you’ve conquered the volcano peak, head to the historic town of Taormina overlooking the coast. Join a guided walk through its old town to check off headliners such as the Greek Theater, Duomo, and Piazza IX Aprile, then relax over an aperitivo along the shop-lined main Corso Umberto I. If you have time to spare, take the funicular down to Isola Bella along the waterfront below the town.
Wind down your first time in Messina by sampling the excellent vintages produced on the volcanic slopes between Taormina and Messina. Relax over a casual wine tasting at a wine bar or with a local host—many experiences include a generous spread of finger foods or a complete meal to cover your final dinner. Book a private transfer to and from the tasting so you can imbibe worry-free.
