Day Trips from Setubal District to Lisbon

The Mafra National Palace is the most important symbol of Baroque architecture in Portugal, built in the 18th century. Located in the heart of the village of Mafra, it is the only National Monument that includes a Royal Palace, a Basilica and a Convent. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, it has over 40,000 m2 and 1,200 rooms including unique spaces and instruments. This is the case of the Library with a collection of over 36 thousand volumes, the bell set consisting of two chimes with a total of 98 bells and the 6 organs that echoed again in the Basilica in 2010. Near Mafra, by the sea, we find the traditional fishing village Ericeira. We became World Surfing Reserve in 2011, (the 2nd globally distinguished reserve and the only one in Europe). Integrated in the Municipality of Mafra, it stretches between the beaches of Empa and São Lourenço, in a coastal strip that concentrates seven world-class waves in a space of only 4 Km: Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d'Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left. , Coxos and São Lourenço

This is not a typical beach trip — it’s a private, curated experience for travelers who want more than just a view. The hidden beach is not accessible by car — you reach it on foot via scenic coastal trails and a historic fishermen’s staircase carved into the cliffs. The journey itself is part of the reward. The hike ranges from 3 to 7 km, depending on the route, with several options available. The difficulty is moderate to high (4/5) and requires good physical fitness. Expect uneven terrain, steep descents and ascents, and occasionally slippery sections. Hiking poles are available free of charge upon request. Unlike standard tours, this experience is fully private and flexible, with no fixed pace or large groups. It’s a balance of movement and stillness — an active coastal hike followed by time to swim, relax, and enjoy a light picnic at a secluded Atlantic cove. This is not for everyone — and that’s exactly the point.

Most of the crowds flock to Sintra, but this day trip from Lisbon takes you off the beaten path to Setubal, a rugged peninsula home to castles and the coastal splendor of Arrábida Natural Park. Let someone else drive so you can admire the landscapes and check off far more of the top sights than you could using public transportation. Highlights include Palmela Castle, Livramento Market, and Portinho da Arrabida Beach.

You will never be alone in discovering the fantastic city, our guides are unique sharing their life, and their lack of penitence to show you the city's secrets. It was going to be an unforgettable day.
