Lisbon’s National Tile Museum (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) exhibits one of Portugal’s most beautiful icons: the colorful azulejo tile. It traces the evolution of the ceramic tile from the first 15th-century Spanish imports to today. A must-see for culture lovers in Lisbon, a major highlight of the museum is an 18th-century blue-and-white tile composition that depicts the city, composed of 1,300 tiles.

An elegant Romantic-era palace estate, the Quinta da Regaleira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a highly popular attraction within the cultural landscape of Sintra. The palace is surrounded by elaborate gardens filled with grottoes and fountains; but the quinta’s spiraling Initiation Well is its most iconic—and most mysterious—feature.

Dating back to 1741, the Church of Our Lady of Monte (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is the most important pilgrimage site on the island of Madeira. Notable relics inside the church include the tomb of Charles I of Hapsburg, an Austrian emperor exiled to Madeira, and a silver sculpture of the Virgin Mary.

One of Madeira’s loveliest green spaces, the island’s Botanical Gardens (Jardins Botânicos da Madeira) debuted in 1960. Stretching across 20 acres (9 hectares) and home to more than 2,000 species of exotic plants, the oasis is best known for its colorful geometric flower beds and carefully groomed topiary gardens.

With more than 150 retailers offering discounts of up to 70 percent, Freeport Lisboa Fashion Outlet is a shopper’s dream—especially for travelers from outside the European Union, who can claim VAT refunds on purchases over a certain amount. The outlet is home to an array of big-name brands and homegrown Iberian labels, which sell clothing, homeware, beauty products, and more. During shopping breaks, visitors can refuel at cafés and restaurants, while kids will be entertained at the on-site play areas.

Sitting pretty on the far side of the Arade River to Portimão, this former fishing village is a slice of old Algarve. Winding cobbled streets snake uphill from the palm-lined waterfront to the town’s church, whose elevated position affords views over Praia da Angrinha and the 16th-century Castle of Arade (Castelo de São João do Arade.

Formed by volcanic eruptions more than 890,000 years ago, the Sao Vicente Caves are a network of underground lava tubes beneath the north coast town of Sao Vicente on Madeira island. Follow pathways around the caverns, rocks, and lakes before exploring the Volcanism Centre with explanatory audio-visual displays.

Fado is Portugal's signature performing art, and it's showcased almost every evening at the Fado in Chiado show in the heart of Lisbon. The live show, backed by a montage of images of iconic Lisbon attractions, introduces the musical form to audiences from around the world and features a singer and two instrumentalists: one playing Portuguese guitar, and the other, classical guitar.

Dominating the landscape on the border between the Algarve and Alentejo regions is the Sierra de Monchique, a forest-covered mountain range. The small town of Monchique is hidden within the hills, offering visitors a look into rural life in the region.

The interactive Lisboa Story Centre museum tells the story of Lisbon through a variety of multimedia exhibits, including a fascinating display on the 1755 earthquake that reshaped the city. Here you’ll find five main sections, each focused on a different era in Lisbon’s history, plus a sixth exhibit featuring a virtual model of the city. During school vacations, the museum sometimes offers workshops and activities for kids.

History and modernity mingle harmoniously in Viana do Castelo, a quieter riverside alternative to Guimarães or Braga. Highlights of this seafood-rich city just outside Porto include the neo-Byzantine Santuário de Santa Luzia, a contemporary marina, a medieval downtown, and proximity to some of the region’s best beaches.

Poised on a hilltop overlooking the city of Funchal, the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens are home to thousands of rare plant species, water features, and sculptures. The gardens are spread out across some 17 acres (seven hectares and also comprise the Monte Palace Museum.

Built during the late 1800s, Campo Pequeno Bullring is a striking neo-Moorish building and events venue in the northern part of Portugal’s capital city. It hosts everything from craft markets to concerts, and is home to more than 60 shops, 20 restaurants, and a cinema. Bullfights are still held in summer, though the bull is not killed during the event (like in Spanish bullfighting).

The Sé Cathedral of Funchal (Sé Catedral do Funchal), also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is Madeira’s key religious landmark. Built in the late 15th century, the cathedral is one of the island’s longest-standing buildings and features classically Madeiran design elements, including volcanic rocks.

Looming 2,600 feet (800 meters above sea level, Pico do Carvão Viewpoint (Miradouro do Pico do Carvão offers panoramic views of Sao Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago. From the lookout point, you can see volcanic cones, lakes, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Situated near Lisbon’s Tagus River, where Portuguese explorers set sail on the Age of Discovery in the 15th century, the Lisbon Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha) spotlights the country’s seafaring history. Highlights of the exhibitions include maps and globes studied by Portugal’s early navigators, a collection of intricately decorated royal barges, and a wooden statue of Archangel Raphael saved from Vasco da Gama’s 1498 voyage to India.

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a popular destination for hikers, snorkelers, and divers, the Berlengas archipelago is a collection of small islands and reefs off the coast of Peniche, Portugal. Only the largest of the islands, Berlenga Grande, is inhabited, and the unspoiled scenery and secret sandy coves draw visitors from far and wide. Fort St. John the Baptist is the island’s most popular attraction, connected to Berlenga Grande by a precarious stone causeway.

A sandy, uninhabited island off Portugal’s Algarve coast, Barreta Island (Ilha Deserta) is a popular beach destination and wildlife refuge inside Ria Formosa National Park. With freshwater lagoons, salt flats, sand dunes, and more, the park has a diverse range of habitats—each with its own resident population of birds and other species, including chameleons.

Resembling the sail of a Portuguese ship and characterized by lattice steelwork, the Vasco da Gama Tower (Torre Vasco da Gama) has become a symbol of modern Lisbon. Situated in a magnificent garden just west of downtown Porto, the Serralves Museum(Fundação de Serralves) has become a top city highlight and one of the most influential modern art museums in Portugal. Its permanent collection spans from the 1960s to the present day, with large sculptural pieces scattered throughout the grounds.

Set within the complex for the 1998 World Expo in Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama Shopping Center is one of Lisbon’s largest and most beautiful shopping malls. Today, it comprises over 150 stores, as well as a multiplex cinema, a wide selection of restaurants, and a health club. Walkways connect it directly with Oriente station, one of Lisbon’s main transit hubs.

Amoreiras Shopping Center is a premium shopping destination and one of Lisbon’s flagship malls. Set in a central location with striking post-modern towers, the complex features over 200 stores, offering a mix of mid- to high-end brands from all over the world. Visitors can also find a cinema, a large supermarket, and lots of restaurants. There’s even an observation deck at the top of the complex, which offers panoramic views of the city.

Madeira is home to a piece of history that goes far beyond the ruins of Rome and the battlefields of France. The vegetation found in the Laurel Forest (Laurisilva used to carpet all of southern Europe—it’s believed that this forest is at least 15 million years old, one of many reasons that Madeira’s Laurel Forest boasts UNESCO World Heritage status.

Located 3,200 feet (975 meters above sea level, the Eira do Serrado observation point offers some of the best views in Madeira. From the spacious deck you can soak up vistas that encompass the mountainous interior of Camara de Lobos and the parish of Curral das Freiras.
