This historical site was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1979. The place is surrounded by vast sandbanks and becomes an island only when the tides are very high. Originally called Mont-Tombe, the island became known as Mont-Saint-Michel in the 8th century due to a vision of a bishop that built the first sanctuary in 708. After that, the site turned into a pilgrimage site and in 966 a Benedictine abbey was built. Later, the island had been fortified and resisted the wars in 14th and 15th centuries. Then the site became a state prison under the French revolution until Napoleon III decided to close it in 1863. You will learn about the architecture but also the legends of the site with an opportunity to eat one the three local dishes : soufflé omelet, lamb or mussles.

Couldn’t be any happier with our experience. Our tour guide, Victor was wonderful! Victor had a great personality and was so informative about the d-day invasion and the history of the area. We thought we knew a lot of the history, but he shed light on so many things that we weren’t aware of. We had 5 in our tour and it was so personal. Even though we didn’t know each other at the start we all connected and Victor made that possible.

Our motorbike and sidecar tour was really great - our guide Tierry was brilliant and told us loads of information about the area and anything we needed to ask about the battlefields and cemeteries that we visited along the way. It was a great way to sample the Normandy coast and all the little villages that we passed through whilst enjoying the freedom of the motorbike and sidecar. Tierry was an excellent rider and a great guide - we loved it!

The half day tour included 3 stops and they were incredible. Our tour guide, Lucy, not only had beautiful, long fingernails and could park on a dime, but she was so pleasant and knowledgeable!! We really enjoyed her presentation (it was like she had years of theatrical training 😉)! Seriously, she was a sweetheart! The sights were AMAZING!!! The tour gave us a new level of appreciation for what took place here all those years ago. Thank you to all the soldiers.

Excellent Tour with a Canadian Perspective

Great tour of the Canadian WW2 landing sites in Normandy. Our guide Stefan was very knowledgeable and thorough, arrived on time, the lunch spot he chose was excellent, vehicle was great — he answered all of our questions and provided albums of photos with many interesting details about the Allied Landing from June 6th 1944 on to the end of the war. We visited a number of sites including the Juno Center and bunkers, Gold Beach, Abbaye d’Ardenne, Commonwealth Canadian Cemetery. Highly recommend this excursion to those especially interested in the incredible efforts and sacrifice of the Canadian soldiers of WW2.

Matthew was a great tour guide! His knowledge of and respect for the events of D-Day made the tour wonderful. I do wish we would have had a little more time at a couple of the sights but that is to be exii of expected when you do a half day tour. My only recommendation is to do a whole day tour if you can. This tour was excellent for our situation!

This tour is not for the faint of heart as it covers so much history, both heroic and tragic. Our guide, Faustin, was amazing. His historical knowledge was superb and he guided us with respect for the subject matter as well as good humor. It was a pleasure to spend the day with him.
