Itinerary
Meet your guide at the bike rental store in Versailles. After picking up your bike a short distance from the Palace of Versailles, continue to a nearby village market to purchase baguettes, cheese, ham, wine and whatever else you’d like to feast on (own expense) for your picnic later on in the day.
The gardens and forests of Versailles span 1,976 acres (800 hectares), and are crisscrossed by a network of picturesque trails and tree-lined paths. Follow your guide and leave behind the pedestrians as you explore parts of the grounds that few venture out to, including Marie Antoinette's country-style hamlet the Petit Trianon, and the Grand Trianon.
Arrive at a lovely secluded section of the Grand Canal that only those on bicycles can reach easily, and settle in for your picnic lunch. Get a kick out of the fact that you are sitting on the same spot where Louis XIV, XV, and XVI enjoyed their meals when they wished to admire their spectacular palace from the outside.
Then, cycle back toward the palace and spend time inside. Learn about the lives of the French monarchy before their removal from power by the 1789 Revolution. See the King's State Apartments and Chapel, and walk through the unforgettable Hall of Mirrors, where the treaty ending WWI was signed.

Toby was a fantastic leader for our group. We covered a lot of ground on the bike and by foot, especially when you finish walking through Versailles. He gave us ample time to get a lunch with excellent suggestions, paused when he needed and pushed enough to stay on schedule so we could get everything accomplished. Toby had great stories and was well educated about the Chateau and the history. He checked in often and asked for questions to make sure we got the most of our tour. I Would highly recommend for someone that wants to be active and explore more of the property of Versailles. Great job Toby!

Very informative we loved our guide Kayla She was knowledgeable and very expressive and animated making the tour very enjoyable. I highly recommend doing the bike tour with a visit to the Versailles Market and lunch by the water edge on the grounds of Versailles.

Jean Franc our guide was perfect. Engaging, concerned for our safety and comfort. Great storytelling making the history enjoyable to learn.
The plan to start at a fresh market and later enjoy the picnic lunch was memorable. Only constructive critique is the bikes, though comfortable, could be better maintained. A few regular bikes were squeaky. My e bike rode smoothly but was missing the control panel. Nonetheless I would highly recommend the tour… Great Day!

An absolute treasure. Our guide was well versed in information and it was just so much fun. We loved the market experience and being able to picnic on the grounds. It was a wonderful way to visit all around Versailles, and then you are able to spend the rest of the day touring the actual palace!

OJ was an absolute legend! The Versailles bike and picnic tour was such a fun way to see Versailles, and OJ made the whole experience even better. He was hilarious, a fantastic storyteller, and made sure everyone felt safe and comfortable while riding. He also gave us some great recommendations that made the rest of our time in the area even better. Couldn’t recommend OJ and this tour highly enough, such a memorable day! 🚲🥖🇫🇷

My kids and I really enjoyed this. Our guide, Kayla, really connected with them. Biking really broke up the typical sightseeing experience. It was a highlight of our trip!
Kristian_S, Aug 2026
Great way to see nearly all of Versailles in a day. Biking around the grounds is a real treat and the tour was expertly led by Anie. It's a long day, so pack snacks for children and be sure to purchase a substantive lunch for the mid-day picnic.

First off, this was very expensive for our family even with the deal. That being said…….Wonderful day trip to see so much of the property at Versailles Palace. We loved our tour guide, Bart! He was so easy to talk to and very knowledgeable about French history and culture pertinent to the palace. So huge shout out to BART! Such an incredible way to see the extravagant lifestyle and history of these kings. The biking wasn’t too strenuous as we would get off periodically and walk around. Plus we went to a market first thing and purchased picnic items (brioche literally melts in your mouth!) and midway through our bike tour he spread our a tarp where we all ate our picnic by the canal. Magical and lovely day I will relive over and over as one of my favorite memories!
Kaye_P, Aug 2026
It was, unfortunately, not a terribly informative tour, and the guide was borderline rude and disrespectful. He would tell us long stories, peppered with stale jokes, then said we needed to hurry, because we were running late.
Riding the bike did make traversing the grounds much easier, but I'd recommend you simply rent one on your own and download a self-guided tour on your phone. You'll get just as much out of the experience, for for less money.

Very poor communication about starting point. Would recommend booking directly with Fat Bike Tours and ask for JP

This trip was one of our favorite. We did the full day and if you have smaller children I would recommend the half day becayse it is a long day. Wonderful wonderful tour. I went with my husband and 4 teenage daughters. We all loved the bike rides through the town, the picnic lunch and the tour of Versailles. It was a wonderful experience.
Ryan_F, Jul 2026
The guide was great and highly knowledgeable about the palace, grounds and french history.
They lost a star because 1/2 the tour was around a big pond and stopping for a very long lunch. It would be better if we got more time at the secondary houses and palaces. I also found it odd how the tour ends at the main palace for a visit when the lines are longest vs starting with the palace on the AM and learning about what we saw afterwords. A good tour but not deserving of 5 stars

Wonderful tour of the palace and grounds of Versailles. The in depth history was told in a colorful way. The team reached out ahead of time to check with us to see if we were running late and had some bring us to the group when we arrived. The bike if was not strenuous, and the bikes were in terrific condition. Our guide Nicholas had an in-depth knowledge of the history and shared it in a colorful way. (He even made it PG for the kids - as we know history isn’t.) We highly recommend the tour company and especially Nicholas. There was no tour of the palace but it wasn’t needed as we already had learned so much on our tour. We shopped for our picnic before our tour at the local farmers’ market.
Leanne_S, Jul 2026
Our guide, Bartok (Bart), started us off at the market, where he shared his recommendations for the perfect picnic. Then, we got on our bikes and headed up to the grounds of Versailles. It was an incredible experience made even more special with his knowledgeable commentary. With his history lessons fresh in mind, we then started our self-guided tour of the castle itself. This will be one of our highlights of our trip to France. We can’t recommend Bart enough!
Kendra_D, Jul 2026
The bike portion with our guide, Bart was wonderful. Bikes are truly the best way we could explore the gardens, hear about the history. The picnic lunch was lovely and a highlight of the day. Prior to the bike tour, we went to the shops to purchase our food and our guide gave ideas for shops to visit.
Bart was funny, knowledgeable and attentive to all of the group. The only part of the tour which was challenging was after we said goodbye to Bart and toured the palace. The crowds were intense, particularly after a calm, beautiful bike tour. Our family agreed the tour of the palace was secondary to our tour with Bart.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you, Kendra! We're so happy to hear the bike portion with Bart was a highlight, and that biking turned out to be the best way to take in the gardens and history. Glad the picnic lunch added to the fun too. Hope to welcome you back for another adventure!
Donna_C, Jul 2026
Annie, our guide was excellent company and shared many interesting anecdotes and facts about the royaltiy who built Versailles. Many thanks to her & Unlimited Biking.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you, Donna! We're delighted Annie made such great company and shared so many interesting stories about the royals behind Versailles. We'll be sure to pass your thanks along to her and the team. Hope to see you again soon!
Holly_F, Jul 2026
Annie was wonderful and had the best stories regarding the history of the monarch and property. She made the day fun from beginning to end.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you, Holly! We're so glad Annie's storytelling brought the history of the monarchy and the property to life for you, and that she made the whole day enjoyable from start to finish. We'll pass along your kind words to her. Hope to see you again!
Greta_S, Jul 2026
It was a very long day. And perhaps it felt longer because I was getting over a cold. But I did not realize that we would have such a short time in the Versailles gardens which were more interesting than in the outside gardens. So just be sure that you do this on a separate day for inside Versailles or bring enough energy and wait until Versailles is open past 5 pm again to fully enjoy both experiences.
The picnic idea was lovely. The history was fascinating.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you for the honest feedback, Greta, and we hope you're feeling better after your cold. You raise a fair point about the time in the Versailles gardens, we know how much there is to take in, and we want guests to feel they have enough time to enjoy it rather than rush through. We'll share your comments with the team as we look at how the day is paced. Thank you for taking the time to share this, and we hope to have the chance to welcome you back for a smoother experience.
Timberlee_G, Jul 2026
Annie was great! Nice spin on historical info making the facts fun. Wish we’d known how much walking, that would be helpful. Great to see parts of Versailles we’ve never seen before!
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you, Timberlee! We're so glad Annie brought the history to life in a fun way and that you got to see parts of Versailles you hadn't experienced before. Thanks also for the note about the amount of walking, that's helpful feedback, and we'll keep it in mind for how we set expectations with future guests. Hope to see you again soon!
Becky_B, Jun 2026
Lots of fun and very interesting guide, Jen- Francois made this cycling trip so enjoyable- the bikes, the market, the Versailles ambience at its best.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you, Becky! We're so glad Jen-Francois made the day so enjoyable, from the bikes to the market to soaking in the Versailles ambience. We'll pass along your kind words to her. Hope to see you again soon!
Teresa_F, Jun 2026
This was a lovely way to see the grounds of Versailles and the surrounding town. Our tour guide Nick was amazing, helpful and also very knowledgable. My one note is that this does involve a lot of physical activity, so people on our tour who were not as used to that had some trouble.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you, Teresa! We're so glad you enjoyed exploring the grounds of Versailles and the surrounding town, and that Nick was both helpful and knowledgeable throughout. Thanks also for the note on the physical activity level, that's useful for us to keep in mind so future guests know what to expect. Hope to see you again soon!
Gerald_M, Jun 2026
Annie did a lovely job of sharing the history of Versailles with our group. E-biking through the gardens is the best way to see them - and it was fun! 😊 (The cheaper choice of 3 speed bikes were ridden by other tour members. An e-bike wasn’t necessary but was a great way to try one out.) The tour starts with the group purchasing food for our picnic. We bought a sandwich and salad at a bakery and drinks at a market near by. The short ride through the streets was easily navigable with Annie’s leadership. The visit to the palace after our ride was tough in 95 degree heat (no a/c) amongst the thousands of other tourists. Only visited the red zone (bedrooms) but saw wonderful furnishings and decor. Highly recommend!
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you, Gerald! We're so glad Annie shared the history of Versailles so well with your group, and that the e-bikes made it easy to enjoy the gardens. Hope to welcome you back for another ride soon!
Michael_P, Jun 2026
I have been to Versailles before but never saw a quarter of what we saw on this tour. Well worth it.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! Versailles has so much more to offer beyond the palace itself, and we love that the tour helped you discover a whole new side of it. We hope to see you again on your next adventure!
Luke_R, Jun 2026
Our guide was amazing! She was knowledgeable and fun. She genuinely was interested in getting to know our group and she seemed to really have fun and enjoy what she was doing.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for the lovely review! We're so happy to hear your guide made such a great impression — that genuine connection with guests is exactly what makes a tour truly special. We'll make sure she knows how much your group appreciated her! We hope to see you again soon.

I am 70 years old traveling with my 12-year-old granddaughter. We wanted to book something unusual at Versailles. The bike tour of the gardens along with a picnic by the canal and ending up with a quick tour through Versailles chateau was everything we could hope for at a wonderful price. You get to to pick up your food in the market square before you go to your bicycles and the guide stayed with us until he dropped us at the chateau Gates for the Versailles tour. Bikes were easy to use with gears and mostly flat terrain. With the bike tour we got to easily traverse from garden to garden and the guide and wonderful history as well as antidotes to tell us at each stop. I highly recommend.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
What a wonderful review — thank you so much! It means the world to us that you and your granddaughter had such a memorable day together. You've described the tour perfectly: the market, the picnic by the canal, the gardens, and the château all in one day really is a special experience. We're so glad the bikes were manageable and the terrain worked well for you both. We hope this is the first of many adventures together, and we'd love to welcome you back anytime!

Before our trip to Paris even began, we were so looking forward to this experience in particular as a romantic, fun, and unique way to explore the grounds of Versailles. Unfortunately, this tour did not come close to living up to our expectations.
From the start, it was disjointed and unorganized - we didn’t even make it into the grounds until almost 11am after starting the tour at 9am. The bikes were used to go (very minimally) from point A to point B, but then we had to essentially fast walk through the different areas and ended up doing more walking than biking throughout the tour at least 2:1.
The only reason for the 2 stars and not 1 is that Vlad was very kind and funny and truly tried to take care of our group. But in the end we were all exhausted, and felt like we could have seen more of the grounds in 1/2 the time (and with way less stress).
In current state, would not recommend. Needs a good bit of work and streamlining in order to be enjoyable. Frustrating.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Here's a reply:
Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback, and we're truly sorry the experience fell short of what you were looking forward to. A romantic day out at Versailles is exactly what this tour should deliver, and we understand how disappointing it must have been when it didn't live up to that. The timing and flow issues you've described are important for us to hear, and we're taking your comments seriously as we look at how we can improve the experience. We're glad Vlad's warmth came through even on a difficult day — but we know that alone isn't enough. We'd love the opportunity to make this right and invite you to reach out to us directly. Thank you again for the honest feedback.

It was a great educational experience on many levels. Dave was prepared with historical data as well as local information to make an extremely pleasurable day!
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for the wonderful review! Dave really does go above and beyond to make every tour both informative and enjoyable — we'll be sure to pass along your kind words to him. We hope to welcome you back for another great day out soon!
Kim_D, Jun 2026
Fantastic! Our tour guide, Nick, was not only a wealth of information and knowledge but very entertaining. We had a lovely time on the bike tour and getting the opportunity to check out the markets in the village before our trip was an unexpected surprise. By the time we were done with the bike part, we almost forgot we still had to tour the castle. It was just so much fun . I cannot recommend this enough. I would absolutely do this again.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for such a glowing review! We love hearing that the market visit was a happy surprise — it really does set the tone for the day. Nick is a fantastic guide and we're so glad his energy and knowledge made the whole experience so enjoyable. We hope to welcome you back for another perfect day out soon!
Chris_N, Jun 2026
Rory was a great guide and we got to see a lot of the gardens and out buildings which were very interesting. Rory explained the history in very plain easy to remember terms which was great. Fun to ride the bikes through the trails of the grounds.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for the great review! We're so glad Rory made the history feel accessible and easy to take in — that's exactly the experience we want every guest to have. Riding through the trails and discovering the gardens and outbuildings really is one of the best ways to explore Versailles. We hope to see you again soon!
