We had an amazing day. Nick was a terrific guide and took care of us start to finish. She helped point us to delicious picnic items during the shopping time and was helpful with dietary preferences. He captivated the whole group during the tour, including my children who were hanging on every word.

Itinerary

Meet your guide at the bike rental store in Versailles. After picking up your bike a short distance from the Palace of Versailles, continue to a nearby village market to purchase baguettes, cheese, ham, wine and whatever else you’d like to feast on (own expense) for your picnic later on in the day.

The gardens and forests of Versailles span 1,976 acres (800 hectares), and are crisscrossed by a network of picturesque trails and tree-lined paths. Follow your guide and leave behind the pedestrians as you explore parts of the grounds that few venture out to, including Marie Antoinette's country-style hamlet the Petit Trianon, and the Grand Trianon.

Arrive at a lovely secluded section of the Grand Canal that only those on bicycles can reach easily, and settle in for your picnic lunch. Get a kick out of the fact that you are sitting on the same spot where Louis XIV, XV, and XVI enjoyed their meals when they wished to admire their spectacular palace from the outside.

Then, cycle back toward the palace and spend time inside. Learn about the lives of the French monarchy before their removal from power by the 1789 Revolution. See the King's State Apartments and Chapel, and walk through the unforgettable Hall of Mirrors, where the treaty ending WWI was signed.

10/10 - Nick was an exceptional guide from the start! Great recommendations for where to buy our picnic supplies and he shared so many interesting facts about Versailles and French history. Cycling was an excellent way to see more than just the main grounds of the palace.

Bike tour

Our Guide Annie was great. She was extremely informative about the history of the grounds. The bike ride was very pleasant and Annie’s recommendations were very good. The picnic was fun a nd the day was the perfect temperature. I wish we actually had done the palace first and then the grounds. The palace was way too crowded and after 6 hours of biking and walking I was exhausted and we ended up walking through as fast as possible. I will make sure to think of the order of the tour next time I book so that I have enough energy for the full tour.

Picnic and history on the palace grounds

Elizabeth_D, Apr 2026
We did this in 2023 and had a great time! Biking around the grounds of Versailles gave us a chance to see the palace from a rare angle. Our tour guide gave us the history of the palace at different stops. We also ate a picnic lunch on the grounds from what we bought at the market (having had about 30” to wander the food market before the ride, including a little wine shop). Our guide left us to tour the inside on our own. I must say, the inside has gotten so crowded over the past 25 years, with so many people taking selfies, that the interior of the palace has lost its charm and become like Disney World. Stick with the bike ride and picnic and you’ll have a great time!

hank you for sharing such a detailed review! We’re so glad to hear you had a great time exploring Versailles by bike—it really does offer a unique perspective of the palace grounds. The market stop and picnic are always a favorite part of the experience, so it’s wonderful to hear you enjoyed that as well. We also appreciate your honest note about the palace interior. It can definitely get busy, especially during peak times, which is why many guests find the outdoor experience to be the real highlight of the day. Thanks again for riding with us and for your recommendation—we hope to see you again on another adventure 🚲

It's all day, mostly outside. Some biking knowledge is helpful. Even though the biking is relatively flat you should be in good health

I can’t say enough about our favorite day of vacation! OJ set the stage for a beautiful day in Versailles! His experience and enthusiasm kept the day moving with energy and excitement. I found myself frequently asking “What’s OJ gonna teach us now?!?” This tour will keep you moving in the best ways as you learn many unknown details of the French Monarchy. Enjoy the ride and keep it Gucci!

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Unique and fun way to see Versailles

Laura_S, Apr 2026
Do not pass on this tour! It was a really unique way to see Versailles. It’s a mix of easy biking and stopping to see the sites and learn the history. I was so impressed with David. From the start he made us feel welcome and helped guide us in the market when we bought picnic food. We loved hearing about the different choices and then having the freedom to go pick out what we wanted. From the market we headed to the grounds of Versailles. David would stop and we would hop off the bikes for a bit while he gave us the history of what we were looking at. An added bonus as a mom is he also would take photos of our family for us which was super sweet and another way that I will never forget this trip. We had our three teens on the bikes as well and they really enjoyed biking and learning the history of Versailles. The biking was never overwhelming and the time seemed to pass quickly, he paced it all perfectly. There were so many different areas of the grounds he showed us that I know we would not have seen without biking. After biking we returned the bikes and were able to easily enter the palace after David walked with us over there for our timed entry. David thank you for a wonderful tour that we will never forget and for being the best guide!

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Thank you so much for this incredible review! We’re thrilled to hear how much you and your family enjoyed the tour—it really is a special way to experience Versailles, and it’s great to know it worked so well for everyone, including your teens. David will be so happy to read this. From helping at the market to sharing stories along the route (and capturing those family moments!), he truly loves creating memorable experiences, and it’s wonderful to hear how much that meant to you. We’re especially glad the pacing, mix of biking and history, and access to the palace all came together for such a smooth and enjoyable day. Thank you again for the kind words and recommendation—we hope to see you all again on another adventure in the future! 🚲

Must do! Our favorite thing about Paris

Kimberly_H, Nov 2025
Today was the most fun & beautiful experience. Our guide was fantastic. He took great care & advised us on everything. I particularly loved the market & seeing all the beauty of Versailles outside. Honestly, the inside was just ok...nothing compared to exploring the grounds on bikes, strolling thru each detail that most miss, abd having a picnic by the reflection pond. Truly feel like we experienced the true French culture

Fun day in Versailles

Great way to visit Versailles. Loved seeing the gardens via a bike. The guide was amazing- so knowledgeable and friendly.

Fantastic day at Versailles!

We loved our Versailles bike tour with Jen! It was such a fun and interesting day. She was so knowledgeable and we felt so comfortable with her as our guide. The bikes were a great way to cover a lot of ground and the stop for picnic was a unique and charming change of pace. Thanks Jen for a very memorable day!

Fat Bike Tour OJ was fantastic. So knowledgeable, friendly, fun! Would definitely recommend this bike tour in Versailles.

Great way to see Versailles!

Missy_M, Oct 2025
Great way to see all aspects of Versailles. Definitely a full day trip. We traveled with family/teenagers. Loved first half of day biking around gardens and local shopping/picnic. Weather was incredible in Oct. went on Sunday, it was very crowded. Second half post lunch was a bit long and we didn’t wrap up at castle until 5:30p. Maybe suggest giving patrons the option to cut down on amt of time at Hamlet/Kings And Queens separate houses in lieu of getting to Castle sooner to have more time to explore. Otherwise, our guide Jessie did a great job! Would recommend for those who have never been to Versailles as a way to see it all! .

jmadden4996, Oct 2025
The setting and the market stop were wonderful, but overall the tour was poorly managed and stressful. Our group had around 20 people, which was simply too large for one guide to handle safely or effectively. Those of us in the back could rarely hear any of the commentary, and communication during stops was chaotic. One group in particular dominated the guide’s attention, which created an unfair and uncomfortable dynamic for the rest of us. They were allowed to ride aggressively, cut others off, and even force their way to the front without any correction. At one point, the guide gave directions only to that group, causing the rest of us to get lost and fall about 30 minutes behind schedule. While the visit to the market was a highlight and the scenery around Versailles is beautiful, the oversized group and lack of structure made what should have been an enjoyable experience feel disorganized and frustrating.

Jeanette_N, Oct 2025
Great tour!! Rory did a fantastic job keeping us safe, giving good biking instructions around the city, and most importantly was incredibly knowledgeable about the the palace!! Would highly recommend to folks who want to experience less crowds, the property is huge so biking around allows you to see more than just the palace - once you get to the palace it's SUPER crowded.

Lovely trip

Nicole_L, Oct 2025
It's been five years and it still remains one of my favorite excursions. I loved shopping in the market for our lunch, biking through the gardens, touring different areas and seeing Versailles.

Definitely recommend

This trip was recommended to us by friends and we, in turn, will recommend it to others. Was a wonderful way to see the grounds at Versailles! Our guide, Nick, was very knowledgeable on the history and witty. Super day!

Loved it!

Erin_M, Sep 2025
Wonderful tour, guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Great way to see all of Versailles! My 5yo rode on a tandem seat and it was perfect

Highlight of our trip thanks to Nick!

Patricia_R, Sep 2025
This is a long and very worthwhile bike tour. A highlight of our trip! Our guide Nick, a lovely and entertaining British gentleman with a dry sense of humor, gave us an entertaining and DEEP education on French Royal history. The trip to the market for our picnic supplies was so fun and gave us a real feel for the French experience. The food we purchased was naturally delicious! The bike ride itself was about 7 miles but broken up nicely with a variety of stops. The bikes were basic three speeds and did the job.

Fun way to visit Versailles

Jeffrey_B, Sep 2025
Although it rained, guide Annie made the best of it! She rec the best stalls at the mkt to buy treats for the picnic , biking through town and the gardens was fun! After biking, she rec how to see the palace highlights ! Loved it !

Rory is Amazing!

Robert_M, Sep 2025
Rory was such a caring, entertaining and knowledgeable guide. He brought the history to life with humour and made it interesting and relevant. We couldn't ask for a better guide. The timing never felt rushed yet we covered everything and more. We're a couple in our mid/late 60's and we could easily keep up with our 20 something counterparts because Rory paced the tour perfectly. Thanks for an amazing experience.

Roger_W, Sep 2025
Our guide Toby ensured we had a wonderful time and always placed safety and our comfort as a priority. He was knowledgeable and pointed out little known facts about the grounds and residents. We enjoyed seeing hidden areas of the gardens and enjoyed a waterside picnic. There was adequate time for seeing the amazing palace. We would highly recommend this tour!

Bike instead of walk!
