A not too happy customer

This trip was cancelled as we all arrived!! I understand that trips get cancelled due to weather (too many clouds), however it was cloudy and windy all day and they must have known that it would not change into the evening. If the trip provider sent the cancellation out during the afternoon or even early evening, guests would still have been able to make alternative arrangements for entertainment for the evening! Or, even allowing the cruise to take place without the possibility of seeing the northern lights would have been a more favorable option! I am also told that I have to wait 7 days for my refund.. The trip cancellation was not done automatically by Viator. 😞

Northern Lights by Boat

We were lucky and happened to book the boat tour on a clear night and witnessed a dazzling Northern Lights display for hours. The staff were friendly and willing to adjust phone camera settings and take pictures for guests. Hot beverages and cookies were a nice touch. Icy conditions on the deck but that is to be expected in February in Tromso. Only thing I would adjust is to establish a more formal boarding process, it was a little chaotic scanning tickets and boarding the boat. Overall, a 5 star experience!

Nice change from bus tour

This was a nice alternative to doing the bus tour for consecutive nights because it left right from town, came back at a decent hour, and at least gave a nice view of Tromsø even if no aurora visibility. I thought being so close to city lights would make it challenging, but we got lucky and saw the best aurora of our trip the night of this cruise! The friendly guides were also helpful/nice (Isabel kindly took photos with your phone) and we had unlimited warm drinks and cookies. However, I didn’t love the actual boat at this cost. It was very cramped for the amount of people. There was nowhere to stand without getting in the way of someone trying to exit. Our seats were a round table bench where you couldn’t easily get up if you weren’t on the aisle… so every time they yelled to run out for aurora activity, it was a challenge to get in and out efficiently. And perhaps the scariest part was that the outdoor deck was icy from cold temps and as the boat moved fast, there were parts that had just a chain on a big opening where someone could just fall off if they slipped or got shoved. Please be very careful and don’t go out without a companion if you take this. Thanks to that night’s aurora activity, I was glad I took this. But there is no view or space to be comfy if you’re just going to be inside.

There is no guarantee to see the lights, but if they do show up, the tour guide will stand outside and show you where to look! They were knowledgable and chatty and helpful and the trip was worth the views. The one thing to note is that the meeting point was wrong on Viator - which caused us to be lost and arrive 15 minutes late! So make sure you confirm the meeting point before hand!

A Great Alternative to the Bus Tour

We had only 10 odd participants so it turned out to be a very private affair. The crew of 4 is very friendly and approachable. Being the only kid, our boy got invited to the bridge. Sail out north or south but actual viewing is very dependent on cloud cover for that night. We got lucky and managed to catch it. In the end, we just had fun talking with the other group from Mumbai; we are Singaporeans btw. Do try it out if you are tired of 6 hours of bus ride to and fro Finland borders to catch the lights (which are overrated IMHO).

Oh those crazy lights!

I booked this tour last minute as I had been watching the weather and left one night open for "just in case". Polar Adventure did a great job on land, and so I booked them again for the sea and it did not disappoint! The skies were clear and before we could get away from the city lights, the northern lights began....and didn't stop the entire time we were on the boat! The crew did a great job making sure we were all aware of what was going on and taking photos of them and the northern lights. The night was specatcualr and the captain and crew kept us on track and we saw some the most amazing northern lights to date! Cannot recommend this company enough!

Excellent communication and effort

I had originally booked this tour as a cruise tour, but as is with nature, the weather conditions canceled the boat option, and the team communicate early enough with several options. I selected the minibus tour instead. This afforded us the opportunity to go on the hunt for the northern lights and beat the clouds. And beat them we did! The team successfully tracked down gaps in the clouds and we saw the northern lights. Kudos to the team for their communication skills and efforts to find the northern lights. Not only would i recommend them, i actually booked another cruise with them on my last night (and had an amazing experience as well).

The crew are helpful and friendly. They speak multiple languages too. Note the meeting point could be different. Check your email before the tour, as the operator would send you the new location map. Ask for the thermal suit. It really helps you to feel warm thus allow you to stay outside longer to enjoy the beautiful scenery and of course the Aurora

Northern Lights boat trip

V cramped boat. They encouraged people to move around the vessel but the railings were v low, felt someone could go overboard quite easily in the dark and icy deck. Nice crew and plenty of hot drinks and biscuits available.

I think the most important thing is to arm yourself with realistic expectations. When we travel on small boats, the deck is not that big. It is a boat and as we inform during the safety information, you have to be careful. The boats are built for the northern Norwegian conditions. Kind regards POlar Team

I didn’t get on the boat. When I arrived they were shuffling what seemed a hundred people onto two boats. When I looked at the boats, the seating was at water level, cramped and there wasn’t much room to move around on top. The boat looked a bit worse for wear.

Had a great time with the team here. Despite being a very cloudy day, and us having very low hopes to see the Northern lights, the team made sure to chase the gaps in the clouds to give us a fair chance of seeing the lights. The team also gave a fair chance to leave the tour at the very beginning and get a full refund due to the cloudy weather but soo glad to have stayed and seen an amazing light show! Definitely would recommend!!
