Fascinating museum

Great museum. Replica of Ra II on display and lots of interesting artifacts, stories and photographs about the Kon-Tiki. Takes about one hour to go through the two floors of the museum.

It’s kind of ironic that one of our favorite things to see in Oslo was a museum about a Polynesian voyage. This museum was great. My 11 year old got immersed in reading the story and said it was his favorite museum. I liked the Fram next door, so there was something for everyone. And there is a decent cafe just outside wine reasonably priced food, so it was easy to do this during the day. Bus from Oslo city center drops of right in front of the museums.

The film, which is actual footage of the journey and taken by the crew, was fantastic. And very cool to actually hear the history behind the Kon-Tiki and the crew’s backgrounds. So much I didn’t already know. The film starts at noon, so try not to miss it. Seeing the Kon-Tiki was a bonus! I would highly recommend it, though it was a labor of love (to myself) to get there! The trains were cancelled due to weather, so from the airport, it was a multi-hop journey. Worth it!

Oslo should get a Nobel Prize for the quality of all its museums including their locations. Within a very short bus ride, you can visit 5 different, and quite exhaustive museums, including Kon-tiki, Holocaust Museum, the Viking Ship, the fabulous Folke Museum, which probably needs months of visits to complete, and the public beach. Kon Tiki shouldn't be missed. Lots of history, lots of moral points to be made, and kids and adults both seemed fascinated. We were!

Loved the museum! Nice place to visit. Surrounded by a beautiful marina and the Flam Museum. Not far from the cruise port. You can access it by the Hop on Hop off bus.

The self tour is quite interesting. The ship itself is amazing and would interest adults and children. Many artifacts are included in exhibits and are well signed. You can catch a short orientation movie and watch the original 1 hour movie. Highly recommend.
