Dharavi slum tour

Siddhant_P, Jan 2026
It’s an interesting experience- gives an insight into life in a slum. It also gives a peek into the industries in a slum

A must do for visitors to Mumbai!

Neil_C, Feb 2025
Our guide Rakesh, was really flexible when we had challenges navigating the Mumbai traffic. The tour was such a great insight into the lives and work of the Dharavi community. A very humbling experience that challenges preconception of the Slum. Recommend to everyone who visits Mumbai.

Great little tour

jennaunka, Nov 2024
Great tour. Very informative. Friendly guide. Surprising how much commerce goes on inside this place.

Challenge your expectations of a slum

Rebecca_C, Nov 2024
Leena was a wonderful guide. The whole experience was seamless from beginning to end. This tour challenged the expectations we had of a slum. It really is a hub of industry and entrepreneurs.

Eye-Opening and Educational ExperiencE

Alexandra_D, Nov 2024
This tour was a truly eye-opening experience that provided a deeper understanding of life in Dharavi, one of the largest slums in Asia. Our guide was knowledgeable and respectful, showing us both the challenges and the resilience of the community. We visited small businesses, recycling units, and local workshops, which highlighted the industrious spirit of Dharavi’s residents. Although some parts of the tour were emotionally heavy, it was an important reminder of the strength and creativity within this community. Highly recommend it for those wanting to gain insight beyond the typical tourist spots.

Not to be missed!!

Very interesting tour! It allows you to know the Dharavi Slum and its residents from an approach that stresses their agency! Special thanks to Rakesh who answered all of our questions!

highly recommend! eye opening experience

dora_m, Jul 2024
highly recommend, This company is kind and respectful of the families and areas we walk through. An eye opening experience! I recommend taking close toed shoes and you aren't allowed to take pictures either. We had a group of about 10 when we road together on the subway but were broken into two smaller groups once we arrived. Alleys are narrow and space can be tight at times so small groups were perfect! part of there proceeds go back into the community which is amazing!

Can’t miss experience when in Mumbai

MariaTeresa_P, Feb 2024
Great experience. You gat to see and more importantly understand a side of Mumbai that is not possible to appreciate on your own. The tour is informative and 2 hours go by very quickly. Lela was an outstanding guide and I wish her all the best!

Breathtaking

RHODRI_T, Feb 2024
Fascinating tour! The guide was an amazing person who was from the slum himself, so he really respected the culture and understood it

Excellent tour and very informative !

Caroline_J, Feb 2024
I've had trouble finding good guides in India, that doesn't just show the way, but properly explains everything there is to know about the place. I've learnt so much about people's way of life in Dharavi and more widely how modern India deals with thise urban planning issues.

Great tour

Douglas_G, Jan 2024
This tour is a must do. The guides were fantastic. It was educational and eye-opening. I hope everyone gets a chance to take this tour.

Cethan, our guide, provided us with an informative and interesting tour through the Dharavi Slum. We were taken through this community in a respectful manner which allowed us to appreciate the unique community.

Excellent tour

yasmin_g, Oct 2023
This is definitely an eyes opening experience! It has definitely changed what I used to think about slums! See people working, kids happily running around and studying has blown up my mind! I went solo and felt safe! Rishi was my guide and I couldn’t be more thankful! He was very helpful, knowledgeable and kind during the whole tour! He waited for me as I was delayed from my previous tour and was super patient! Also 80% of benefits from this tour goes to a charity that helps young people to learn English! I super recommend this tour and their company, they took me to their office and everyone was super kind!

The most interesting is...

Yves_T, Mar 2023
The most interesting is to go through the slum and to have an idea of the life of the people who stay there. Speaking of the technical problems is not necessary. It's about the same all over the world.

Great Tour

Eleanor_T, Mar 2023
Informative and interesting tour and great that the company gives 80% of profits back to the community!

A fantastic insight

John_S, Aug 2022

Dharavi walk tour

Nuno_S, Jun 2022
Awesome tour with a great guide (thanks to Jay and his community that are found a great job with school and other needs in the community) A tour that take us to the comercial area where we can see the recycling center, leather manufacturing, bakeries, pottery and residential areas. Many people don’t know how important are these people and community to the rest of the city. A must see and understand Highly recommend to everyone. Also we are helping these communities to build s better future for their families Greetings from New Zealand

Humbling experience

Neil_C, May 2022
A tour delivered by Javed a local from the Dharavi community. An articulate young man with a genuine understanding of the community. Introduced us the industrial enterprises and different residential communities within the Slum. Couldn’t recommend highly enough!

The chance of a lifetime@

A must-do tour if you want to understand Mumbai its culture, peoples and history. Cooking lunch with a Dharsvi local was the highlight of our 3 days on Mumbai and our tour guides were excellent

Dharavi

Peter_H, Jan 2020
Our guide Suraj was excellent, he gave us a really interesting tour and answered all our many questions. We would definitely recommend any visitors to Mumbai to take the Dharavi tour.

Humbling but really inspiring

Susan_R, Jan 2020
Really enjoyed this trip with our lovely young guide Hitesh who is a resident of Dharavi himself. Learnt the history of the huge community of Dharavi, how its progressed over the years and saw the positive side of the industry that happens here. Fantastic, authentic shop for the leather goods produced here - the makers have started their own Dharavi brand. We arrived on a festival day - lots of music and smiley children. Really like the fact that reality Tours pour money back into community projects - we saw one such in action. Young men being taught communication skills for the workplace. A great tour, would thoroughly recommend. I also think that Reality attracts like-minded individuals - we had a lovely group.

Interesting tour, excellent guide!

zdenkob317, Jan 2020
Everything was as described in the itinerary. We did not take photos but memories are still alive: narrow alleys, children playing on the common playground, men sewing brand name jeans in dark rooms, mixing colour for textil with their own hands or ironing using a machine with open gas flame inside...This tour is simply "must do" during your stay in Bombay!

Superb

Divya was an excellent and most knowledgeable tour guide for Dharavi. She was very funny and also hospitable. Good luck x

Eye opening and for a good cause

903ankurb, Oct 2019
I was initially apprehensive of going on a tour of Dharavi, because I was conscious of not being disruptive to residents. I was glad to hear that the tour operator puts 80% of its profits into the community projects in the area itself, with a lot of tour guides having lived and come up from Dharavi. It can definitely feel claustrophobic at times because of the narrow alleys and commercial locations; but it’s all worth looking at to understand how this corner of society isn’t cared for. We also took the Street Art was extension, which touches areas not in the main tour and is highly recommended for some stunning artwork covering entire buildings. The tour ends at their gift shop / office which I was initially iffy about, but it has genuinely cool gifts made within Dharavi from recycled materials such as paper and saris, which was quite fairly priced and went to fund their community projects too. We were never hard sold anything at any point, in fact, that didn’t even show us the souvenir area and left it to us to discover ourselves! After being hard sold again and again in India, we appreciated this a lot. Loved our guide Shailesh who did both halves of the tour and was very knowledgeable about the tour and accommodating

wow

This was a highlight of our trip to Mumbai. The tour gives a great inside view of the slum. The tour guide went the extra mile as well. Would do all over again.

It was with great trepidation that I...

S_G, Aug 2018
It was with great trepidation that I booked the Dharavi Slum Small-Group Tour in Mumbai. Like everyone else who watched Slumdog Millionaire, I expected the Dharavi Slum in which the movie was filmed to be dirty, impoverished and quite possibly dangerous. Boy was I wrong. What an eye-opening experience this tour proved to be! Our guide, Champ, is a former resident of the slum and expertly navigated our group through the narrow passageways therein. At no point did I feel unsafe throughout the entire visit. What Champ also successfully did is reset my definition of slum. He pointed out how the slum served as a place of immense opportunity for its inhabitants, as well as illustrating the sense of community within the slum. If you are hesitant to book this tour, do it. You will get a rare glimpse into a completely different world.
