As a solo female traveller, I was very skeptical before booking. I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED AT HOW SAFE AND WELL CURATED THE WALK WAS.
Dhiraj, my guide holds EXCEPTIONAL knowledge about Dharavi and having grown up in the area - he’s welcome to walk into most shops and homes for a peak and a conversation.
Communication skills and language were no barrier at all. I had a French tourist with me and the three of us made good friends by the end of the walk! :) made some nice memories together.
Dhiraj walked us through the commercial district first, explained the types of businesses, their impact on Mumbai, India and the world. These included global recycling businesses, bakeries, cloth and fabric manufacturing, leather industry and essentially waste negative endeavors in Dharavi.
As for the residential district- we walked through the Gujarati pottery section, the food markets, the South Indian communities section of residential colony, and a few others.
As a true city tour would be, Dhiraj also led us through some public spaces within the city, explained drinking water and sewage infrastructure.
We were also given a detailed account of movies shot in the city including Slumdog Millionaire .
I ended the tour with lunch with a local family. They were Very hospitable and food was very yum.
This truly was an experience of a lifetime and I’d recommend anybody visiting Mumbai to take this tour.
Mumbai is a lot more than its cafes, and its historic buildings. Dharavi really is the beating heart of the megapolia
I had an excellent tour with guide DK. We visited many manufacturing sites in the neighborhood. I would recommend this tour.
It is a good experience. Guides are fluent and know where to go to show you the interesting sites. Come and discover the “in-between” city.

Very eye opening experience. We were there in early March and it was extremely hot (37C). Be prepared for the heat and the smells. So interesting to see this community in action.
Varsha gave us an excellent tour today. We explored the industrial, commercial, and residential districts, gaining a comprehensive perspective of the city. She is a true professional, highly recommended.

Our guide never showed up. There was no communication from the guide, and we never did the tour. We expected better service. We left chat messages with Viator customer service, no response.

The young lady Pooja, was amazing, she works and lives in the area and can tell you first hand of life in this place.
Her knowledge was awesome, great explanations, answered questions well and spoke lovely English, she went out of her way to show us everything, she is a very inspiring young woman.
Extremely informative, though with possibly too much detail, as it was delivered so fast; at that speed, it's very hard to absorb it all. There's a cultural difference there: Indians speak very fast, with few pauses. Very different to most native English speakers, and l imagine it would be hard for foreigners who don't have a great grasp of English.
A meaningful insight into the real world of so many people in India. Hard work and determination to live with dignity.

Tour guide varsha was friendly and informative. I was dreading that it would end up being an over-dramatised, cliched tour or that it would be too voyeuristic.
But it was great. A calm and interesting tour into the slums. I was surprised by the number and variety of small industries being run there and also impressed by the neatness and livability of the small homes and the calm friendliness of the people there. The alley ways were complicated and every inch was used. I loved it.

About two hours to see several thriving businesses in the slum. It is hard to hear sometimes due to the noise from the factories.

We had the best experience and this will become a core memory forever. Puja, our guide was incredible , smart and extremely kind. She showed everything. The kids all knew her. She also helped us handout 250 books to the kids throughout the slum. This was a highlight !

Our guide, Ms. Pooja, was delightful. As a lifelong resident of Dharavi, she was well versed in the community and its life and provided valuable context and insight throughout the two hour tour. We were glad that hotel pick up/return was available, but be advised it takes about one hour each way due to traffic to reach Dharavi from South Mumbai.
Tour guide was a no-show despite having a "confirmation" and bar code ticket issued by Viator. While Viator readily issued refund for tour, I spent almost as much money as well as 1.5 hours taking Uber transport to a tour that did not exist on that day. Viator points to their terms of use saying that they are not responsible as all they do is supply a platform - however they were the ones who collected money from me and fraudulently sold me a service that did not exist. Hiding behind their terms.
