Excellent experience for all levels of artistic ability. The staff were super helpful, and we are so happy with our products.

Awesome experience. They were generous with their time and expertise, and very patient. They made sure we got the best results possible. Came away with a terrific souvenir.

Very enjoyable experience! The owner and his family were very helpful. His Mom is 89 and amazing. I'm an artist and you need no talent or ability to draw. There a a ton of patterns to choose from. My husband and myself did t-shirts but you can pick other items if you want to try the technique on a tote bag or other items.

Tucked back in a quiet neighborhood you will find this cute little shop. The family running this was so friendly; you could tell they took a lot of pride in their craft. We had a great time as a family learning how to do Roketsu. I wanted my family to experience some true Japanese culture and this delivered and we came home with one-of-a-kind souvenirs that have special meaning to us! This activity is so well priced for what u get to do! It was a nice break from the typical tourist things and you walk out that day with your finished product. I highly recommend this experience for anyone looking to do something out of the norm!!

Went into this without much expectations but really enjoyed it. The location is off the beaten tourist track and less of a conveyor belt system, with people coming in and out, like other activities available in Kyoto.
It was intersting to learn about the dying process and the staff including the grandma working the shop were inviting and helpful.

Nice relaxing experience. If you want a different off the tourist track and get to take something home do this. It's quiet and relaxing and a great learning experience that you can see all over Japan.

It never gets boring even after 20 years.best class in kyoto. My guests always have fun. Great instructions

This was a really fun experience! I am not particularly crafty, but I was able to make a cute bag with designs on both sides and dye it myself. They have lots and lots of designs you can choose to trace, or you can make your own. They speak English and were super helpful and nice. I plan to do it again next time I’m in town.

I absolutely loved this experience.
You can choose from different items like a banner, bag, or t-shirt, and there are tons of patterns and images to work with—but you’re also free to create your own design.
The entire process was fascinating, from applying the wax design to seeing it transform in the indigo dye. The instructors guided me through every step, so it felt very approachable even as a beginner.
Definitely worth doing if you’re looking for something different and memorable. Highly recommend.

Great fun creating traditional art in Kyoto! The whole family enjoyed the calm break from the hectic city. It’s a little far out from the city, but if you’re doing the bamboo forest, it’s on that side.

We got to experience a beautiful art form in a way that we could try the technique and also appreciate the years of practice and repetition takes to truly become a craftsman as skilled as our teachers. I will definitely be taking this class again and I highly recommend it to anyone of any skill, you will not be disappointed!

They have many stencils to choose from and a nice variety of bags, t shirts or shapes of cloth to work with. So much fun, and you end up with a very personal souvenir of your time in JAPAN!!

Kindest sweetest instructor. Didn't rush us but gently showed us what to do to achieve best results. Fab fun.

A fun, unique, affordable, and relaxing experience. It was a welcome break from being on your feet and listening to tour guides, offering a hands-on activity with the added bonus of a souvenir. An added bonus was supporting a small, family-run business. Be sure to schedule in advance!

We had a great time at this workshop. The instructors were both lovely and very helpful. Our final products turned out even better than we expected! The course suggested 1.5-2 hours but we did more intricate designs and it took about 3 hours. We never felt rushed and there were others that finished before and after us. Would highly recommend!

This was absolutely fantastic! We had a great time and the studio was fascinating! The artists who helped us were incredibly talented and very kind! I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys arts and crafts

What a unique experience and a great way to change things up from heavy touring/walking days. The shop proprietor and his mother were there to help guide us through the process, and worked really hard to make sure our designs turned out well (it takes a lot more wax than you would think). They were incredibly patient, especially with our autistic daughter who needed extra help and guidance. In the end we ended up with some really cute T-shirts and a great bag to carry them in and a new appreciation for the art of dyeing!

This was a wonderful experience in Kyoto! If you want to take a break and experience authentic Roketsu dying, this is the place to go! You can select from dozens of designs they have, or free hand a design of your own! You could also bring a pre-planned design of your own. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Very similar to batik art, where you use a paintbrush and paint wax onto an item you want to design. There are t-shirts, tote bags, placemats, curtains, just so much to choose from. Your art piece is ready to take home packaged and dry in 2 hours. My family thoroughly enjoyed this experience!

An absolute must. A wonderful experience, well organised and learning from true masters. Fabulous local activity.

A hands on opportunity to take part in a traditional Japanese craft. The studio was well equipped and welcoming and the teachers kind and friendly

This experience was so much fun! I am not very good with these kind of crafts but the people there were very helpful and walked us through each step. Everyone was so kind and we had the best time. And now I have a shirt to commemorate the experience 🙂 Thank you!

It was very interesting to experience the traditional dyeing techniques. The people running the workshop spoke little to no English so sometimes it was confusing what they were trying to say. I also found that they would try to help with drawing the wax design but would ruin the design details. I was happy with the experience but the result could have been better, I advise to try something simple!

An amazing experience!! With very friendly and helpful hosts.
We got a good result with minimal skill.
Ricci_B, Jul 2025
Very soothing and engaging. Great for anyone into crafts and cultural experiences. Light English spoken but very hands on. Good for all experience levels.
Sara_M, Jul 2025
I booked this experience for myself solo, while my husband and son went on another tour. This was such an amazing experience! I was a little hesitant to book it because I am not very artistic. So glad I did it! I made the best souvenir of our trip! The whole process was very calm and relaxing. I never felt out of place because I was on my own. It was just a wonderful experience from start to finish. I wish I could have gone back again and again!

Easy to get to and a wonderful experience! Our family of 6 (2 adults and 4 teens) had an amazing time with this activity. We spent a few hours away from the hustle & bustle of sightseeing to slow down and craft together. The owner was very kind and patient, even though we took a long time due to the number and complexity of our chosen designs. The shirts and banner turned out so much better than we had hoped! It was a perfect opportunity for us to disconnect with the world and have a few hours of quality family time. None of our teens touched their phones a few hours :). Thank you!
Peita_R, Jul 2025
It was really interactive and participants have a lot of creative control. The language barrier made it a bit tricky to learn the technique but it’s not hard to come out with a product that is stunning to look at, at the end. Would recommend!
Paula_L, Jun 2025
Awesome experience and one of a kind souvenir to take home from Kyoto! Would highly recommend if you want to make a unique, cultural craft. Everyone in our group had great results regardless of talent level.
Laura_V, Jun 2025
Amazing experience, they are very kind, gentle, they take the time you need (we took 2h just to do our drawings on a 1.30h time experience, we stayed for 3h in total)
They showed us every step of the making of the dyeing and even tho they don’t speak very well english, we understood each other quitte easily.
Would recommend 100%, very passionate people !

This was a very fun wax resist type of fabric dyeing. You get to pick what you want to dye whether it be a decorative banner, t-shirt, tote bag, etc. You then get to choose the design, do a little practice run on a small piece of cloth and then begin painting the melted wax onto the chosen fabric. It will then be dyed for you and the results will be amazing! Instruction and guidance given by the owner and his mother.
