I am being kind with the 3-star rating because I don't know who to exactly blame for our poor experience, so I will just share a blip from our experience to help others make an informed decision. First: do not plan this outing on a day where you have a flight or dinner reservation or bus trip. Block the entire day from 7:30am till maybe 10:30pm. We were told by the tour company that we would easily be back to our hotel by 8pm, but that is not the case (and I don't think it was our guide's fault - I honestly have no idea if the company and guide even communicate). Once our enthusiastic guide, Hiep (or Steven as his Western name), told our bus our itinerary, many groups were quite assertive that we were promised an earlier return by the company. This created stress for our guide and for all the guests on the excursion. So if you know that your calendar day is completely booked, you can avoid this stress. Positives: The bus was comfortable and we had an amazing driver. Our guide really wanted to make our experience fun. And Ha Long Bay - wow! It's a must see! Negatives (aside from the time miscommunication): Pick-up should be one location. The bus should not be wasting time navigating the busy side streets of Hanoi. Additionally, while I know tour companies are contracted to side-stops, they weren't enjoyable. Food on the boat: it wasn't good. If you do opt for this tour, bring a small side of soy sauce and salt. The food lacked flavor. Oh and the wine was awful, but that's no one's fault except the winery in Vietnam. The bathrooms were pretty yucky, so bring wipes and tissues. The boat tour was typical from what we saw: three stops. The bay was majestic. It is a must-see, but I know there has to be a better way to see it. Thank you to Hiep for getting us to the hotel to catch our airport transfer despite the communication glitches.

The sails on the boat were nonexistent and the food was low quality. The time agreed upon for our return did not happen and several people were put in a bad spot because of this. When questions were asked to the guide, he was not truthful and avoided answering completely. I would not recommend this tour.
