This was an outstanding guide, but the logistical support was poor. First, the guide! Noah was among the best we have had during dozens of tours. He was extremely knowledgeable and thorough in his explanations. Being from the pre-Inca Quechuan community, he spoke with a passion and depth of feeling that completely drew us into his world. And he was in no hurry! He wanted us to soak it in, to see Machu-Picchu through his eyes, and to understand what this place meant to its inhabitants. We probably came with more background than most on Inca and pre-Inca civilizations, but Noah shared an amazing amount of material that we had not known about. An important side benefit of his unhurried pace was that we did not struggle to keep up despite being at such a high altitude. There were two logistical problems. We had agreed months ago to be met at our hotel at 5 AM, and we had a confirming email a few days earlier. When we got to Cusco the previous evening, we were told that the operator needed to meet with us that evening. We sent three email replies trying to get a workable time; there were no responses.That evening, as we were getting ready for bed, the operator called and said he would be over in ten minutes. We got dressed again and went downstair to meet him. The information he gave was essential, and he changed the time for meeting our driver to 5:30. Our guess is that he decided that he would prefer an evening meeting to getting up early the next morning. Maybe we could be more resilient; but the change did not contribute to our experience. The operator assured us that the driver would go into the train station with us to show us where to go. When we got there, the driver waved us toward the crowded station and gave us no guidance. I said, in Spanish, “Come with us.” He said nothing and again waved in the direction of the station. We did find someone in the station to tell us where to go. Perhaps, we have been spoiled by other guide services; we have come to expect better.
