The very best way to visit machu pichu and experience a marvellous 2 hour long downhill cycle ride dropping nearly 2000m over 40 km on day 1 followed by a unique experience of jungle trekking. on day 2 with a relaxing dip in thermal pools. It is cold at the start of cycle run but after that warm for whole trip.
Trekking fairly relaxed, and suitable for anyone with some trekking experience with a 4 hour flat walk from hidroelectrica to aguas calientes along train tracks on day 3.
After taking USD$11 bus up and visiting machu pichu at 7.00 am on day 4 we then walked down a great number of steps from machu pichu back to railway tracks. The walk along the tracks to hidroelectrica did feel long but ok. Took us nearly 4 hours from machu pichu to hidroelectrica.
It rained on the walks along train tracks so pocho essential in rainy season. Also put your backpack contents into a plastic bag. inside your backpack. Watertight boots or trekking shoes essential.
The second day we were able to forward on one backpack to next hostal for 10 soles. We were also able to take as much as we could out of our backpacks and place nto a large plastic we took with us and leave at a restaurant in hidroelectrics till next day. That was unexpected but a great help to lighten backpacks.
The minivan back from hidelectric to Cusco was fine. About 6-7 hours. Arrived 21:30. If you upgrade to train for $80 each you save the walk alomg the train tracks and arrive a couple of hours earlier.
Our guide Fernando had loads of local knowlege as he is from the Cusco area. We communicated in Spanish, not sure how it would be in English. I expect just fine.
The hostals and meals were basic but just fine. We had a privare room for two each night. Water can be puchased easily en route but prices range from 1 to 7 soles a bottle. Aguas Calientes is an expensive place but has an extraordinary backdrop with a rapid moving jungle river passing through.
This is a must-do when coming to Peru', it's a preparation to the arrival to Machu Pichu but also a deep connection with nature and with your wild spirit.
This trail is particularly amazing because we did a lot of adventurous activities: trek in beautiful nature, preparing our own coffee, eating fruits out of the trees, rafting, ziplane, mountain bike. It was just amazing and very well organized!
We went on the Inca Jungle Trail. Very well organised. Good communication throughout from Arturo.
Our guide, John, looked after us well and was knowledgeable about the trails we were walking. He was friendly, caring and professional.
Steven our Machu Picchu guide was so knowledgeable and made me want to find out more about the Inca and wider Peruvian history.
Biking was so much fun. Bikes were well maintained and full safety gear provided.
First day of hiking was hard but such an achievement to complete. Amazing views, narrow paths, sheer drops but I felt safe under John’s guidance. We got to make our own coffee from bean to cup in the middle of the jungle the traditional way. The thermal springs at Cocolmayo were a lovely relaxing way to finish the day.
We walked up to Machu Picchu and back, rather than taking the bus, so decided to stay an extra night in Aguas Calientes (otherwise we would have had to walk another 11km to the bus) - Arturo was able to change the day of our bus return to Cusco with no problem.
Accommodation was good. Food was plentiful and nourishing.
For extra money on this tour you can raft, zip line, take the bus to Machu Picchu, get the train back to Cusco etc - so it can cater for all needs. Take small change for tips along the way.
I would thoroughly recommend Reserv Cusco
I wish I can recommend this travel agency but we were disappointed in multiple ways. FYI, all travel agencies basically do the same in Peru, we ran into other groups at the same restaurants where the tour takes you, the same activity locations, in fact, sometimes they merge us for activities even if they are different companies. So it feels like this is not only the issue with this company. The other groups appeared to have the same issues.
1st issue: the activity advertises that entry ticket to Machu Picchu included. Well, yes, but they buy the ticket the day you arrive to Machu Picchu. So you run the risk of no tickets left when you arrive. Also, last minute tickets can only be bought in person with a passport, so no one can buy your ticket on your behalf, not even the company. Our issue was that on day 2 out of a 4 day trekking tour, one of the fellow trekkers saw on TikTok that the ticket office was 3 days ahead on tickets, so if we arrived on Sunday, we would get a ticket till Tuesday or Wednesday. This was going to mess up our trip plans. We then asked the guide if we could shorten the trekking/adventures so we could get a ticket ASAP, after all, we all are there for Machu Picchu. The guide was very nice and flexible and we trekked for over 20 km in one day (the last 2 hours were in the middle of the dark jungle where we used our cellphone lamp), we arrived to Aguas Calientes on Friday and were able to secure tickets for Monday (3 days later). The issue now was that we were stuck in Aguas Calientes for 3 days and there’s nothing else to do in that town besides see Machu Picchu and a butterfly sanctuary (the butterfly visit takes like 1 hour max). This triggered extra hotel expenses for us, meals, lost hotel nights at cuzco.
2nd issue: the activity says that it includes transportation back to Cuzco. Yes, but you must catch it at Hidroelectrica which is about 8km away from Aguascalientes and it must be before 2:30pm, otherwise you are on your own. Let me clarify that if you decide to hike up to Machu Picchu, it’s about 4km of stairs one way, plus the tour around the historic site + walking to Hidroelectrica for about 8km, you are talking about walking ~15 km to catch the provided transportation! The other option was for us to just take a train and bus to Cuzco but on our own pocket. Well, because we found this out once we were in Aguas Calientes, the cheapest train ticket was $160 per person! I asked the agency if we would get reimbursed a percentage since we were not using their transportation (let me repeat, about 8km away from Machu Picchu) and they said no.
After all, the tour was $415 USD, plus an extra night hotel $42 USD, plus $160 train ticket, totals $617. That’s over $200 per person extra, all because they were not clear about the logistics.
I now understand that they cannot buy the tickets until you get there in person. But please disclose that ahead of time! I understand vehicles cannot enter/leave Aguas Calientes and one has to walk to Hidroelectrica about 8km, but please disclose that ahead of time! Should I known these facts, I would have not done this activity. I have traveled to other countries, and agencies usually have a way to get their own tickets for their clients, in fact I was once unable to get tickets for the Alhambra (Granada, Spain) and a tour company had tickets if I bought a tour with them. When I bought this package and it said tickets were included I thought I did not need to worry about getting tickets for the programmed day, but it appears that the agency was taking their chances at buying tickets right there and then. Again, if the agency cannot buy the tickets ahead of time because of Peru’s policy, that’s fine. Just disclose it ASAP so the traveler can make an informed decision. If the agency can only provide transportation from Hidroelectrica (8km walking distance from Machu Picchu), disclose it ASAP so the traveler can make an informed decision!
I must say that Percy (our guide) was amazing, he was very knowledgeable, friendly, and flexible. We understand that the poor tour guide was caught in the middle of this mess and was trying his best to help us.
Starting the trip, biking down the mountain was a very surreal experience. Amaru (our tour guide) was great, helping trouble shoot problems we encountered as well as helped take some great photos as well! Arturo was also helpful in managing the tickets for macchu picchu! Would recommend this experience who is up for lots of hiking!
This was a tour that we will remember forever. Eduardo was an absolutely incredible guide who shared stories about the spirituality of the Inca culture and land. He was a really nice guy and truly was a great person to get to know. He made us feel special and helped us celebrate a birthday during the four days. The activities themselves were fun and exhilarating. Everything was worthwhile. Also, all the stays were comfortable and all the food was authentic, local and SO delicious. I highly recommend this tour.

Thank you so much Darius, Johan and all the Reserv Cusco Team, we also shared your feeling, also thanks for choose Reserv Cusco like your Tour Operator in Peru.
This tour was fantastic from start to finish. It was in no small part due to our guides David and Roger along with the other people we we met along the way like Tony in Santa Maria (our awesome rafting guide/in-town bar owner). The tour is very well set up with a prefect balance between adventure and hiking. To be honest I thought the tour was supposed to be more hiking and camping than it turned out to be but by the end, myself and our group were glad it wasn't. We did so much more. You still hike enough to make you collapse into your bed every night but we saw a lot of Peru, it's people, it's culture, and food (ate I mean) which we would have otherwise missed I think with a 4-day hike.
Looking back, I think the adventure to Machu Picchu with our guides was the best part of the trip. What's funny is the guides mentioned that alwhen explaining how the tour was planned. David did a great job of loosening everybody up, explaining anything and everything to us, and making sure we were happy and taken care of from when we woke until we went to bed. We hiked through forests with our guides pulling fruits and vegetables off trees to share and teaching us about different herbs/spices along the way. They showed us plants used for cosmetics. They arranged any travel, lodging or meals. They helped take pictures. They helped set up a small celebration for a group member's birthday. They did everything!
Things to know: some breakfasts (for me) were a bit light but I always had some trail mix or something on hand so no big deal. Be prepared that Machu Picchu may be cloudy when you go during your assigned time slot (we had a lot of fog with temporary clearing). Bring a lot of water because when you do hike, it's for a few hors and terrain can be rough with constant increases to elevation. Some people prepped for altitude sickness. I didn't and had zero issues.
We stayed in hostels every night and always had transportation so that you never needed to carry all of your luggage for the day. Just what was needed. So we mostly had 4-day packs and took out what was needed for the day. Besides that, hotels in Cusco and Aguas Calientes hold any luggage not needed on the trip or until you depart the cities. In each place our group had a 3x room that the girls always used, a 2x room that the guys used, and a single room I always got since they were mostly all friends.
On the train back(Peru Rail for me), a face shield was mandatory (2 sol with people selling by the station), if it's cloudy it's because you need to peel the protective layers off (a French group showed me), and on my Vistadome train, head to the front for a traditional music and dancing show and an outside car balcony for pictures. Dining car was not available (covid) and during certain months, you will need to take a charter bus several hours from the last train station to Lima (opposite if going TO Machu Picchu)
Again, great tour, great guides, great price, unforgettable experience.

Ohhhhh ! Nathaly you dedicate a lot of time to your activity for this great review... Thank you very much, We are very happy, receive the love of our entire Reserv Cusco Team , a big hug!!!!! ... Come back soon Peru awaits you!
Had a great time, met some great people and recommend the tour. Guillermo, our guide was very knowledgeable both on fauna and flora and Inca history. He also worked indefatiguably in the background to ensure meals, timings, connections etc were as seamless as possible.
On the upside, the trip included ziplining and white water rafting and thermal.hot springs which weren't actually in the aviator description.
On the downside, the accommodation was unnecessarily poor on balance. I would have happily paid a little more for a little less penny pinching.
Considering the overall cost however, can't see how they deliver all that for the price... 👍
A very adventurous, varied program. On the way there were always nice stops, such as in a small cabin in the middle of the forest, where we were demonstrated the simple coffee production. Very nice guide and nice staff, which helped a lot off the tour. Rafting was also a lot of fun and worth its price. We didn't do the ziplining because at the moment there were only tickets for Machu Picchu available in Aguas Calientes, which was temporary. The tour is definitely highly recommended
