Hike itself was great, but the tour operator (Chullos Travel Peru) was a nightmare

    Soumya_P, Dec 2025
My husband and I booked this full-day hike through Viator well in advance and were very excited. Unfortunately, the logistics and communication from Chullos Travel Peru were completely unacceptable. Despite providing our pickup location, we received zero communication about pickup time even a day before the tour. I sent multiple messages via Viator and received no response. We finally had to physically go to their office, wasting valuable vacation time, where we were met with a very nonchalant attitude. When we questioned the lack of response, the agent (Yamile) simply said, “Oh, I just sent you the details on whatsapp. We don’t respond on Viator.” Then why accept bookings through Viator? Only because we went to the office were we told that pickup was not possible and that we needed to be at a café at 4:30 am (a 13-minute walk from our hotel). That was fine - the issue is that this information was never *proactively* shared. How are guests supposed to plan? The next morning, we arrived early at 4:20 am, with no instructions about the bus, license plate, or contact person. From 4:30 am to 5:10 am, we called Yamile 7+ times with no response. We then tried four other agents before someone finally replied saying, “I don’t know what happened, but we sent a car to transfer you to the bus.” The car arrived at 5:27 am, at which point it was clear that the bus driver never received our pickup details. We stood outside in 5°C weather for over an hour, with zero communication. The only explanation we got was, “I don’t know what happened.” Thankfully, the hike itself was beautiful, the guide was great, and we met wonderful people. But the gross incompetence and poor communication, especially from the assigned agent, seriously dampened the experience. A tour operator should not add stress at 4:30 am in freezing temperatures. Would not recommend Chullos Travel Peru based on logistics alone.

Beautiful hike, Tour Could Use Two Guides

    Michael_G, Sep 2025
Our guide was very friendly, informative, and took extra time to make sure everyone got photos, which we appreciated. Breakfast and lunch were also great. That said, this tour could be organized better. There was only one guide for a very mixed group — some wanted to hike quickly, others were on horses, and some (like us) needed to go slower due to the altitude (15,000 ft). At one point, we were told the guide had to leave us to stay with the faster group and that we needed to meet him back at the restaurant by 1 pm. We ended up taking a horse at that point to avoid being left behind. I would strongly recommend choosing a tour that provides two guides so no one feels rushed or left behind. Tip: Take a horse on the way up (100 sols) — the trail is steep in sections (moderate difficulty at sea level, very hard at high elevation). But keep in mind that horses only take you up; you’ll still need to hike the last 5–7 km back down. The hot springs were about 90°F and not really worth getting in, but some may enjoy them. Overall, the guide did the best he could with such a mixed group, but a second guide would have made the experience much smoother.

    Response from Host, Sep 2025

Dear traveler, Thank you for highlighting the kindness and dedication of our guide, as well as the quality of the food during the tour. We regret the inconvenience caused by the group's organization and understand the importance of having more support in diverse groups. We greatly appreciate your recommendation about including a second guide, which we will take into account to improve our services.
