We booked the “All Day Private Family Tour to Elafonisi Beach & Agia Sofia” through JMP Chania Tours & Private Transfers, hoping for a comfortable and memorable day exploring Crete with our multigenerational family (including a senior with a walker). Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations.
Our guide (I think was Giannis, though I don't recall for sure if that was his name) was late meeting us at the Port of Souda, leaving us waiting in the hot sun while all other tour groups departed. When he did arrive, he did not meet us at the designated area like other guides, but stood well beyond the port gate, requiring our group—including my mother with limited mobility—to walk a considerable and difficult distance.
We were surprised to find a small hybrid vehicle awaiting us, which was extremely cramped for our group of six. Once on the road, the situation worsened. The guide played loud pop and techno music at an uncomfortable volume and drove aggressively—tailgating other vehicles and weaving through traffic—which left our group silent and anxious for much of the drive.
Though we skipped Agia Sofia cave due to accessibility concerns, we requested a stop at an olive farm or similar local spot, which the tour description said was possible. Instead, we were taken to a small olive oil shop. While the shop had charm and the owner was kind, we were told we would be shown where the olive oil is made; instead we were taken into the small room where it is made and just left there - no explanation, no tour—just a quick sample and a purchase opportunity. It felt uninformative and transactional.
Elafonisi Beach was beautiful, and we appreciated that the guide arranged a small transport vehicle to help my mother get closer to the water. This was the one bright spot in the day.
The return drive was just as nerve-wracking with the same blaring music and aggressive driving. When we arrived back at the port, a security guard refused to let the guide drive us through the gate—even after he pointed out my mother’s disability. This was particularly frustrating, as we had seen other guides drive their guests directly to the ship. It left us wondering if there had been prior friction between the guide and port authorities.
Overall, this tour was disappointing and uncomfortable. While Crete is stunning, we didn’t feel safe, accommodated, or well cared for by this guide. I would recommend looking elsewhere for a more professional and thoughtful tour experience, especially if traveling with elderly or mobility-impaired family members.

We would like to clarify a few important points to help provide better context for the experience you described. At the Port of Souda, only licensed taxis are allowed access inside the gated cruise ship area. As a registered private transfer company operating under the Ministry of Transport, our vans must park just outside the gate, which is less than a one-minute walk—a standard practice for the vast majority of tours at the port.
The driver did arrive approximately 10 minutes later than scheduled, as he explained to you. This delay was due to him stopping to purchase cold bottled water, which we provide complimentary to all our guests. The time was fully added back to the duration of your tour.
Regarding your concerns about driving style, please allow us to respectfully disagree. Our drivers are seasoned professionals with many years of experience, and in over 240 reviews across all platforms, this is the first time we have received such a comment. Nevertheless, we always take guest comfort seriously, and we will continue to monitor and train our staff accordingly.
As for the music our drivers are always happy to adjust or turn it off completely if requested—please don't hesitate to speak up in such cases, as your comfort is our priority.
Regarding the olive oil visit: We do offer optional local stops when requested in advance. Unfortunately, a request made only two hours before the tour's end does not allow sufficient time to arrange a proper visit or guided tour. Had we been informed even the day before, we would have gladly organized a more immersive and informative experience.
We're happy to hear you enjoyed Elafonisi Beach and that we were able to arrange assistance for your mother to get closer to the shoreline—that was very important to us.

Yiannis Pantelakis was our tour guide and extremely friendly and we had very interesting conversations with entire family both to and from our destination!!! learned about local culture along the way!! Yiannis was very generous with his time as well as we lost track of time at the beach and he still ensured we stopped at the caves and offered us time to take pictures along the scenic route. extremely appreciated as really felt like we were being given a tour by a cousin with family-level attention. Gave my teenagers great advice on where to hit the pubs and clubs. Communicate via WhatsApp day before was appreciated. Provided sun umbrellas and some water and ensured we knew to bring our beach towels.

The tour guide was flexible and worked with us as to what we would like to do. He offered umbrellas for the beach and explained the beautiful countryside of Crete as we went along. The cave Agia Sofia was amazing. Loved the Greek lunch at a quaint tavern! Delicious

An absolutely incredible day from beginning to end! Giannis was a wonderful guide that was flexible, easy to speak with and had the most wonderful suggestions. We had a fabulous day with our Driver Mihali, despite the inclement wet weather conditions. We climbed the steps to the beautiful St Sophia Cave and enjoyed the rock formations and views. Unfortunately we couldn’t stay longer than 45 minutes at Elafonisi due to the rare stormy weather. Our Driver Mihali was kind enough to take us to Akrotiri and Venizelos park for the panoramic views and a beautiful Venetian 16th century church located in the park. Comfortable vehicle and an excellent Driver/Tour guide with Mihali. Enjoyed by my family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers.

We had a nice trip; because we were coming from Rethymno, an 8 hour trip was too short since we didn’t have enough time to make stops. However, the drive was very scenic and we appreciated Giannis coming all the way from Chania to get us. Our youngest son was very keen on seeing the Elafonsi beach. While it is hardly pink (and packed with tourists), it is still worth a visit.

The cave was really cool. We enjoyed a snack and some orange juice as well. I didn't think I could make it up the 257 steps, but I did. It is a long walk to the beach, but it was worth it. Such clear water and just beautiful. Stravos was an excellent tour guide. He watched out for me on the steps in case I may have fallen and was so personable and friendly Would definitely recommend this tour.

Giannis was absolutely AMAZING! At first we wanted to go to the pink sand beach but he told us it was a hour and a half ride which none of us wanted to do. He took us to old town instead of the caves which was beautiful and has some great shops and spots to eat. When we met back with him we went to some of his favorite spots which has amazing views and a great beach! I would take this trip again! If you’re thinking about going on this tour, ask for him. He’s amazing!

We took the tour of Elafonisi Beach and Agia Sofia Cave. Stavros was a wonderful guide. He was personable, knowledgeable and really cared about ensuring a great time for us. The beach was absolutely gorgeous, and the cave was so interesting. One of the best parts was stopping on the way down at the taverna for Greek snacks and drinks. Our Guide Michial was a very nice man. He took us to the cave then onto the beach where we determined how long we wanted to stay. After he took us to a local bakery to get some local food which was nice since we had a little extra time. The beach is beautiful but very busy so you probably will not be able to get a chair .

Crowded. Not very pretty. Has nothing on Hawaii or California. Where is the pink sand? Bad food. Water was very clear.

What an amazing day it was ! The city of Chania was very unique experience. We saw the best side of both the mountains and the beach. Our tour guide Michail was exceptional, very friendly and knowledgeable about the area, specially that he is a local of the Island. We stopped by a cave in the mountains that dates to 1,500BC was so cool to see. Than we went to Elafonisi beach which was hands down one of the best beaches globally that i have been to. Overall 100% satisfied with this tour, highly recommended !

We were staying in Chania, so it’s a very long drive. When we got there, all the chairs were taken and so we had to lay on our towels on the sand, fine for younger people. The water was lovely and views were very nice but the beach was super crowed, towel to towel on the sand - thank goodness our driver gave us an umbrella. Be aware, you must also walk 10 very hot minutes to the beach, cars are not allowed. Our driver did stop at the caves on the drive, which was very cool and the scenery during the drive was beautiful, but again, a long drive, a long walk, and a crowded beach.
