We recently took a four-hour private walking tour of Cardiff, Wales, guided by Tony, and it was hands-down one of the best experiences of our trip. If you’re planning to visit the Welsh capital and want more than the usual tourist highlights, we can’t recommend Tony highly enough.
Tony was an absolute standout guide—outstanding in every way. He provided all the essential information on Cardiff’s major landmarks, like the stunning Cardiff Castle (with its fascinating blend of Roman, Norman, and Victorian history), the elegant Civic Centre, and the vibrant Cardiff Bay area. But what really set this tour apart were the little-known facts he shared that you won’t find in guidebooks.
He pointed out hidden gems like the secret tunnels beneath the city streets, the world’s oldest record store (Spillers Records in the charming Morgan Arcade), and quirky historical tidbits about Cardiff’s coal-exporting heyday and its surprising green spaces (more per person than any other major UK city). He even delved into lesser-known stories about ancient sites nearby and some of the city’s eccentric past, which added such depth and intrigue.
What impressed us most was how engaging, energetic, and genuinely passionate Tony was throughout the entire four hours. He never seemed to tire, kept the energy high with his storytelling, and had a great sense of humor that made everything fun. Best of all, he tailored the tour perfectly to our interests—we mentioned a love for history and architecture, and he adjusted the pace and focus accordingly, skipping some areas to spend more time on the things we were most excited about. It felt like a personalized exploration rather than a standard group walk.
The four-hour duration was ideal—not too rushed, with plenty of time to absorb the sights, ask questions, and even grab a quick coffee along the way. We covered a good amount of ground comfortably, and Tony’s local knowledge made navigation effortless.

Gillian was wonderful! Full of knowledge and laid back to changes we needed to make to accommodate our schedule. We were traveling from Glasgow to London and only made a 5 hour stop in Cardiff. We stored our luggage near the train station and saw the city in the 3 hours we had and we are so glad we did!!

ROB IS THE BEST!!! My mom and I got into Cardiff the day before our tour, and we walked around on our own, thinking we had seen most of the city. We told our guide that we wanted a general history overview and some architectural stops. Rob did an amazing job explaining the history of Cardiff and we visited so many different spots that my mom and I never would have found on our own! We learned all the little fun stories of the city and it was truly insane how old and beautiful some of the buildings are (compared to anything we have in the US!). Any questions we had, Rob had an answer! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Cardiff for the first time, and choosing the length of the tour was extremely helpful as well; we chose a two hour tour in the morning and still had the entire day to go back to spots and take his suggestions!

This was a fantastic way to see Cardiff. Tony was our guide and made it truly enjoyable. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure we all got something out of the tour. Our daughter loves art, so he showed her art installations and sculptures. Our son is a Dr Who fan so he made sure to get some great show related photo ops for us. Highly recommend.

This was an extraordinary day made so by an extraordinary man. Private tours are always a treat, and Tony was so kind, generous and full of excitement for his beautiful city of Cardiff. We seemed like friends within no time. When we wanted a coffee, Tony said "wait, I'll take you to the best one", and he certainly did. This was our first time to Wales and from his efforts to help us appreciate the Welsh language and to share perspectives gained from his former career as an educator, it was an amazing day. Without asking, he also spent the day shooting photos, and then shared these incredible collages I've linked here. Just an amazing experience, and as a veteran of many tours, we were overcome with his genuine spirit, kindness and knowledge.

Our guide Rob assisted us in selecting the sites we had time to see during our limited time in Cardiff. (we had a long list!) We walked all over and saw the Castle, St. Johns Church, the Market and so many other places. During our walk he regaled us with the vast history of Cardiff, telling us stories, both real and legendary! He really knows the history of Cardiff! If you book this tour and are lucky enough to get Rob, you won't be disappointed!

Tony was amazing. Easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and flexible. He doesn't have a set route and will modify for what you like. It's not a standard tour, it's like going with your grandpa to his home country and he tells you about every site.

Maggie was such a kind and friendly guide! We really appreciated getting to know her! That being said, I think a bit more effort could have gone into planning the tour. It felt a bit haphazard, and we primarily visited sites we easily could have navigated ourselves.

The tour guide struggled to communicate due to her spoken English level. She was constantly struggling to find the words to explain something, but that's not the main problem. She seemed unprepared to give this tour and had very shallow knowledge of the city and its culture. The level of information she gave is equal to what you would get from the first 2 sentences of a Wikipedia article on the subject, and due to her poor English, we have to check Wikipedia constantly or read the information board of the historic buildings during the tour in order to understand anything she was talking about, if you'd like a clearer idea of what her presentation style felt like. Imagine an unprepared highschool student in a foreign language class struggling to find the right words while doing a presentation that he crammed for the night before school. She could not answer basic questions regarding the history of buildings and places in Cardiff that she included in the tour by herself. She said it's because she's rusty but I cannot believe that someone could forget so much of the history of a city and it does not feel right for us to be her training wheels when we paid so much money. If you are considering paying for this service, save your money and just walk around the city by yourself while looking things up on your phone. That is exactly what we did after our tour in order to get an idea about Cardiff's history.

I am sorry to hear that your tour did not go as you expected. From your review, it seems as if perhaps you would have preferred a professionally guided tour rather than a Lokafy tour. In all of our information, we outline that we provide unscripted walking tours through a city with a local - just as you would see a city if you had a friend showing you around. Lokafy allows travelers to connect with locals, and learn about the city from their perspective; things like what it's like to live there, advice on their favorite restaurants, and also connecting on a personal level. We screen applicants extensively but do not require them to be natives of the city. Generally speaking, we find our international Lokafyers have a special connection to their cities as they have chosen to call them home. As they are not professional tour guides, we do not require Lokafyers to have a detailed knowledge of the city’s history. We hope that the conversations you had with your Lokafyers helped you connect with them on a personal level.

We went on the tour Sunday, February 16, 2020. It was during Storm Dennis, wouldn’t you know it. Tony arrived on time, with his car and umbrellas!! It is a walking tour, but with the down pour of the storm, he brought his car to lessen the impact. We had a fantastic time!! Despite the rain and wind, we walked around the city, and the bay, learning about the history of Cardiff and seeing notable architecture and museums. He went above and beyond our expectations. We had tea and light refreshments and he took a lot of pictures of us. Very personable. He absolutely loves his city and it shows. Please ask for Tony, you won’t regret it.

Gillian was a genuine dream! Right on time, well prepared, extremely friendly. My wife and I could not be any more pleased ‼️
We heard all the little background stores and history of the area, and the makings of Cardiff. We had s pleasant walk, not hurried, and allowing for questions, and recommendations for things we did not have time to do on this tour, as well as restaurants not to miss.
One of the best highlights was having afternoon high tea on the castle grounds. Too much to enjoy, and happy to have leftovers for our evening enjoyments.

Gillian was fantastic. You could tell she loved her city and country very much. She was very knowledgeable about the history past and present for the area. She know the back ways and places to visit. She had our time with her planned out as to not waste one minute. When we went into the markets she bought us a "welsh cake" to try which as delicious and very kind of her. She took us to a fun little shop where they make hand carved "Welch love spoons". We purchased on for us and our soon to be married daughter. They will engrave for free there, so it was a great suggestion for a souvenir. I highly recommend this tour and Gillian.
