The Thunder Gate is the entrance gate to Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. An enormous red lantern hangs in the middle, flanked by statues of the Shinto deities of wind and thunder. The gate is very large at about 38 feet (11 meters) tall and nearly as wide. It’s popular with tourists and is often photographed.

The Thunder Gate is at the southern end of the Senso-ji Temple complex in Tokyo’s Asakusa neighborhood. It lies at the end of the popular Nakamise Shopping Street, near where it intersects with Kaminarimon-dori Street. Most visitors to Asakusa will pass through the gate on their way to Senso-ji Temple.

Asakusa’s Thunder Gate is very popular with tourists, so it can be very crowded. To enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere—and to take a photo without others getting in the way—aim to visit earlier or later in the day, before or after the shops on Nakamise Shopping Street open—generally before 10am or after 7pm.

While there’s no specific dress code to visit the Thunder Gate in Asakusa, visitors to temples and shrines in Japan are expected to dress modestly and tidily, to behave respectfully, and not to distract worshippers. Aim for conservative smart–casual clothing that covers your chest, shoulders, and knees. You may need to remove your shoes before entering certain areas of Senso-ji Temple.
