Great experience if you really just want a direct ride from Zurich to Lucerne. We just needed a ride to the city so we could do our own exploration. The guided part was perfect. Not too much not too little. We learned about the history of Switzerland and got the right amount of interesting information. We recommend this tour.

Beautiful city, wonderful places to visit, delicious food and our favorite was Rosengart museum of art.
John_J, May 2026
A lot of walking beautiful views boat ride on the lake is worth the sites. Shopping and food are also great. A train ride back to Zurich was a faster more picturesque experience.

The bus tour with stops going to Lucerne was great. My wife really loved the mesmerizing green Swiss landscapes. We had lunch by the river bank, the ambiance was stunning, the food was great, our server from the Philippines was very professional.

Glorified taxi service from Zurich to lucerne. Tour is in English and Spanish so always feels like you’re missing out on something. Got some interesting facts on the drive there but hard to keep up with the language changes. Once we got to lucerne was a 10-15 min walk from the bus stop to the centre but didn’t get any commentary on the way at all. When we stopped we didn’t get told any info about lucerne either so wasn’t really a walking tour we were promised. Also didn’t realise that there was an option on this trip to go up to one of the mountains so most people were doing that and only had less than an hour in lucerne which didn’t allow much time to ask the tour guide for suggestions or anything. Not worth it at all, might as well just get the train back and forth. Would not recommend this lucerne day trip at all!
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Dear Victoria,
Thank you for participating on our Lucerne day Tour from Zurich and for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience.
Please note that this is a partially-guided tour. As outlined in the Viator description, the time in Lucerne is intentionally left unguided to give guests the flexibility to explore at their own pace. To support this, we provide a detailed booklet with sightseeing suggestions, local tips, and optional activities such as a lake cruise or museum visits. Our guide is also available in Lucerne to answer any questions. Afterward, the guide continues with the group for the fully-guided portion to Mount Titlis.
Lucerne, like many destinations in Switzerland, is also accessible by train. A return ticket costs CHF 54 per person without a Swiss Pass, while our tour is only CHF 8 more. This price reflects the added value of being accompanied by a guide who is available to assist with questions and logistics. Many guests appreciate this support, as navigating public transport in a foreign country can be challenging.
We understand that a more flexible itinerary may not suit everyone, and we're sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations. For those looking for a more structured day, we offer fully-guided tours across Switzerland, which may be a better fit for your preferences.
We wish you all the best for the rest of your travels and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again to one of our fully-guided tours.
Best regards,
Magdalena from Best of Switzerland Tours

Our guide was great- offering recommendations for the free time in Lucerne. There was plenty of time- about four hours- to explore the town.
MINERVA_S, Dec 2025
This is an unguided tour of Lucerne. You get some commentary on the bus on the way to Lucerne but the guide drops you off at the city center and provides a map and recommendations and picks you up at the end of the tour. You tour Lucerne on your own. There isn’t really much to do in the city. Olga the guide was okay and helpful.
Sue_A, Dec 2025
Olga provided a city and history tour of Zurich on our way to Lucerne. The bus driver took the back roads so we saw the beautiful countryside.
Barbara_C, Nov 2025
This tour was great! We planned a last minute trip to Zurich and booking this tour made our plans so much easier and relaxing. It was a carefree way to go and enjoy the beautiful town of Lucerne. The driver and tour guide were wonderful, giving interesting information about the surrounding area.
Micol_M, Oct 2025
If you want a day planned to the second for you, then skip this tour.
We really enjoyed it, you get 5+ hours of free time in Lucerne and honestly, it went really quick for us, we loved it.
Keep in mind, it’s Switzerland, it’ll be expensive regardless.
Our guide and driver were both lovely, very knowledgeable and helpful.
De_H, Oct 2025
It was a nice day to visit Lucern. The guide and driver were friendly and professional. The free time gave us a lot of freedom to do what we liked to do.
Lesley_H, Oct 2025
If you are going to lucerne you will only get the bus ride and then be left on your own for 7 hours without a guide. Very expensive bus trip.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Dear Lesley,
We are sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations.
Please note that this is a partially guided tour, as outlined in the tour description. The time in Lucerne is intentionally left unguided to allow guests the freedom to explore the town at their own pace. To support this, we provide a detailed booklet with sightseeing suggestions, local tips, and optional activities such as a lake cruise or museum visits. Our guide also remains available during the Lucerne stop to answer any questions or provide additional recommendations.
Upon arrival in Lucerne, our guides point out key landmarks such as the Chapel Bridge, the Old Town, and the Jesuit Church. To further support our guests during their free time, we also provide access to an audio guide app, which includes a one-hour self-guided walking tour of the city.
While Lucerne can certainly be visited independently by train (a return ticket from Zurich costs CHF 54), we believe that our tour, priced at CHF 62, offers the added benefit of traveling with a professional guide, having a reference person, and receiving helpful materials including a city map and curated suggestions.
We understand that this type of flexible itinerary may not suit every traveler, and we truly regret that you found the experience unfulfilling. For guests seeking a more structured and fully guided experience, we offer a variety of other tours across Switzerland that may better align with your preferences.
We thank you again for your feedback and wish you a pleasant continuation of your travels.

Amazing tour our guide Angela was great at explaining everything
Lucerne is worth the time & price it
Joseph, Jul 2025
When they say “a short city tour” in Lucerne, they mean that the guide will escort you from the bus to a nearby place where you are each handed a map and the guide says “be sure to be ready to board the bus at 5:30, but we may be late, so you will have to wait for us if we are.” Then the guide disappears.
Very little to do in Lucerne. There are a couple of small churches that are on the map which are nice, but no real artwork, no museums or anything like that. They solicit customers saying, “As an art lover, you should not miss paying a visit to the Rosengart Museum…” A Rosengart Museum isn’t on the map. I found a “Kunstmuseum” by myself but it was shut down.
They do include a ticket for a boat ride that is supposed to include a commentary. There is no commentary. They announce over the loudspeakers when we leave the dock, and again when we return. That’s all. It does kill a little time.
Then we show up for the bus at 5:30 which doesn’t show up until 6:00, with the excuse that “there was a traffic accident and we can’t help that.” Reading other reviews here, it appears that this is a regular excuse for being late. I have no idea where the driver and guide disappear to for six hours.
So most of the day is wasted, just sitting around waiting for it to be over.

Dear Joseph,
Thank you for joining our tour to Lucerne and for taking the time to share your detailed feedback.
We are sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations. Please note that this tour is a partially-guided tour. As outlined in the tour description, the time in Lucerne is intentionally left unguided to allow our guests the freedom to explore the town at their own pace. To support this, our guests receive a detailed booklet with sightseeing suggestions, local tips, and optional activities such as a lake cruise or museum visits. Additionally, our guide remains available during the time in Lucerne to answer questions and doubts. After this stop, they continue with the group to Mount Titlis, which is the fully-guided experience.
Regarding the museums, we regret to hear that you were unable to locate the Rosengart Collection. The museum is indeed in Lucerne’s city centre and open daily, though we understand that temporary closures or maintenance at other institutions may occur beyond our control. Nevertheless, the tour includes a "Best of Lucerne" audio guide with a tour in Lucerne (available for download on your own device) for key attractions and landmarks.
The panoramic boat cruise on Lake Lucerne is offered as a scenic and relaxing addition to your free time, and it consists in 1-hour yacht cruise cruise with audio commentary (audio guide app to be installed on own device). We regret that this information went unnoticed, and that you missed the commentary on the boat.
We understand that this type of flexible itinerary may not suit everyone and truly regret that you found the day unfulfilling. For guests seeking a more structured experience, we offer a number of fully guided tours across Switzerland, which might align better with your preferences.
We wish you all the best for the rest of your travels and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again to one of our fully-guided tours.

Lucerne is a lovely town with beautiful views, old town and lots of opportunities for chocolate shopping. Definitely worth getting the boat trip and taking your swimming things for a swim in the lake.
Bernadette was a wonderful tour guide.
Lianne_K, May 2025
Don’t do this. They drop you off at Lucerne and leave you there and return about 7 hrs later to get you. There’s no short tour of Lucerne includes as advertised. I recommend instead buying a train ticket and going to and from yourself
Response from Host, May 2025
Dear Lianne,
Thank you for joining our Lucerne - Most Charming Swiss Town and for taking the time to write this review.
We are sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations and that it felt more like transportation than a guided experience. While it is possible to travel to Lucerne independently, many of our guests appreciate the added value of having a professional tour guide accompany them. Our guides not only facilitate the logistics of the trip but also serve as a helpful point of contact for any questions along the way. More importantly, they share personal stories and insights into Swiss history and culture that enrich the journey.
Upon arrival in Lucerne, our guides introduce guests to key landmarks such as the Chapel Bridge, the Old Town, and the Jesuit Church. As clearly stated in the tour description on Viator, the tour then includes around 7 hours of free time, allowing guests to explore Lucerne at their own pace. During the morning, guests receive an informative leaflet with recommendations on what to do and see in Lucerne. To enhance this experience, we also provide access to an audio guide app featuring a one-hour self-guided walking tour of the city.
Once again, we are sorry that your experience didn’t live up to your expectations. We hope to have the chance to welcome you on another of our tours, perhaps a fully-guided one that may better suit your preferences.
Best regards,

Rocio_L, May 2025
Self-guided with lots of walking in Lucern. Very crowded. Piers to get boats confusing. Beautiful city and would like to spend more time there in the future.
Response from Host, May 2025
Dear Rocio,
Thank you very much for joining our partially guided tour to Lucerne and for sharing your feedback with us.
Lucerne is indeed a beautiful and easily walkable city, and one of the advantages of a partially guided tour is the flexibility it offers, allowing guests to explore at their own pace and choose how much they want to see and do. That said, we are sorry to hear that you found there was more walking than expected.
We also regret that the city felt overcrowded during your visit. As one of Switzerland’s most popular destinations, Lucerne can be particularly busy during peak travel seasons. Regarding the confusion around the boat piers, we understand how that can be frustrating. In such cases, we recommend asking the local staff at the piers, who are always happy to assist. Also, our team is always available at the office should you need any assistance from our side.
We are pleased to know that, despite these challenges, you appreciated the beauty of Lucerne and are considering a return visit. We would love the opportunity to welcome you on another tour in the future.
Best regards,
Clara from Best of Switzerland Tours

Bus ride to Lucern was very scenic. Was expecting more of a guided tour in the city. Interesting info on the ride there.
Dianne_B, Jan 2025
It was a good ride up and walking around was nice. Lucerne was on our bucket list for sure! Bring good walking shoes and warm clothes, Dec is cold but we knew that. The town was everything and more than we were expecting.
However...the journey back was not good. We met the tour guide at the time we were given to take the bus back.
The guide told us that the bus was delayed by 20 minutes, and to go get a beer or whatever and be back in 20 minutes. We, my husband, Daughter and son-in-law and our 4 year old grandbaby went across the street to Mcdonalds to wait to get out of the cold. The Guide and all others left.
My Son-in-law went outside to check on the bus about 10 minutes later, no bus, about 15 mins later he checked again no bus...no people waiting. Then at the told time 20 mins later we all bundled up again as it was very cold and went to the bus stop. There was no guide no bus but waited any way, another couple showed up that were with our group. We all 7 waited and waited no bus, no people, no tour guide. It was late and very cold the 4 year old was so cold and tired. 30 minutes after the bus was supposed to be there the first time, we decided to call the tour company. To be told that there had been a misunderstanding and we would have to wait until 7:25 for a different Bus! So 1 hour 40 minutes after our scheduled pick up. I asked where the tour guide was and the rest of our group. We were told she left on the Bus the 1st Bus! I said what they left us when did the first bus get there, he said oh about 5 minutes after everyone left the Bus stop!
The other couple were as perplexed as we were as they had returned 10 minutes later. We all couldn't believe after telling us to go away and come back in 20 minutes that they didn't wait for everyone to come back it would have only been a 5 minute wait for the Bus! As we both came out and looked after 10 minutes.
All they said was Sorry for the mix up we will send other bus to get you. I keep saying I don't understand and asking questions that is when I received very vague information, it was like they didn't want to tell me what happened or why. I still don't know what really happened.
OMG we were so upset! Luckily the restaurant right by the bus stop, that had a window looking out to the stop. Let us have a table, If we bought drinks, we didn't want to be left by second bus!
The tour operators said they would give us 20% off, for us, that was unacceptable for their mix up, and leaving 7 of us with a 4 year old.
We did get on the second bus, that tour guide said oh we are very sorry, and when the skiers are in town there is alot going on, what.
So after 11 hours we were back in Zurich at our hotel. Aurgh.
Oh I almost forgot the other couple talked to the tour company on my phone and he said this was unacceptable and they told him he could get a train back if he wanted! WHAT!
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Dear Dianne,
Thank you very much for joining our tour to Lucerne and for taking the time to share your feedback with us.
We are truly sorry to hear about the difficulties you experienced during the return journey to Zurich.
Due to heavy traffic, our bus was delayed longer than initially anticipated. To make the wait more comfortable, our guide informed you of the delay and suggested taking a short break. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding occurred when the bus arrived in Lucerne, leading your guide to believe that you and the other couple would not be rejoining the tour. As a result, the bus departed for Zurich without you.
As soon as we became aware of the situation, we promptly arranged for another bus to pick you up at the meeting point to ensure you would not need to arrange alternative transportation, such as taking a train. Regrettably, this second bus was also delayed due to the traffic conditions.
We acknowledge that this was an error from our side, and it is for this reason that we immediately provided a 50% refund to compensate for the misunderstanding.
We sincerely apologize once again for the inconvenience and confusion this situation may have caused. Despite the challenges, we hope you were still able to enjoy the beauty of Lucerne. We would be delighted to have the opportunity to welcome you back on one of our tours and provide you with a better experience. Wishing you a wonderful rest of your stay in Switzerland.
Best regards,
Clara from Best of Switzerland Tours

The beauty of the architecture and gorgeous scenic views on the way. Also the guide was utmost professional and passionate while explaining.

Angela pointed out the important sights and gave a bit of history to these sights. She was very courteous and friendly. Sergio, our driver was awesome and got us all home safely and on time!

Great weather and excellent for lake cruise and photos! Was quite a long stopover in the town though. Christmas markets were on so I kept busy there.
Nadine_D, Dec 2024
A fulfilling day visiting Lucerne and all the beautiful sites! The bus driver and tour guide were exceptional!
Sam_V, Nov 2024
Was just a bus ride. They drop you off in Lucerne and pick you up in 6 hours. You may as well take the train. The guided tour part doesn’t happen. Your guide leaves with the bus to the mountain peaks.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Dear Sam,
Thank you very much for participating in our Lucerne Day Tour from Zurich and taking the time to write this feedback.
We are sorry that the tour didn’t live up to your expectations. While Lucerne can of course be explored individually, guests choose to join our guided tour because of the explanations of the history and culture and personal anecdotes provided by the tour guide. Additionally, while a return ticket to Lucerne would cost CHF 54, our tour is only CHF 5 more expensive. We believe this is a very considerable price as our guests have a tour guide who acts as a facilitator and a readily available point of contact for any inquiries that may arise.
We hope that you still had a memorable stay in Switzerland and look forward to welcoming you on tour again, maybe next time on a fully guided tour.
Best regards,
Magdalena from Best of Switzerland Tours
Lokinendi_R, Oct 2024
We thought of this tour as a Guided tour, but the bus dropped us at Lucerne downtown and left us to tour by ourselves for 6 hours. They showed us the tourist office nearby to get any information about what to see, how to get there, etc.
John_A, Sep 2024
We had Bernadette as our tour guide for the day on this trip. Whilst weather could not be helped, she made the tour fun and interesting on the way there for the partially guided section.
When visiting Lucerne, you could easily spend more than a day here, so make sure you have a plan in mind of what you would like to see and use google maps (or equivalent) to plan your routes to get the most out of your time there.
Again on the bus back Bernadette was able to keep us entertained with interesting facts and information as we passed key landmarks. Highly recommended if you want to take a day away from Zurich and see some of the surrounding towns / villages!
RONALD_N, Sep 2024
City was lovely and the day beautiful. A bit of traffic delay on the way back. Most grateful for the driver securing the shoulder bag I left behind and returning it to me the next day. Excellent service.
Tailai_P, Sep 2024
It’s not worth the money. They basically just drop uou off and you are on your own for 6 hours then they take uou back. Guide talked in the bus for the ride there less than an hour, that’s what they called partly guide. It’s misleading tourists. I could take trains there for less $25 to get there, but I paid over $70 through viator. So not recommended for the money.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Dear Tailai_P,
Thank you very much for joining our partially guided tour to Lucerne and for taking the time to share your experience with us.
We are sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations and that you felt the information provided was misleading. Our aim is always to provide clear and accurate descriptions, and we regret that this was not the case for you.
As stated in the Viator tour description, the journey from Zurich to Lucerne and back is accompanied by a guide, but once in Lucerne, the exploration of the city is self-guided at your own pace. Upon check-in, guests receive a detailed leaflet with suggestions for things to do during their free time in the city, and our guide is always happy to assist with any questions or recommendations.
As with any other destination in Switzerland, Lucerne can be visited individually by train. While a return ticket to Lucerne would cost CHF 54, our tour is only CHF 5 more expensive. We believe this is a very considerable price as our guests have a tour guide explaining the history and culture of our country and sharing personal anecdotes. This is the main reason why our guests opt to join a guided tour instead of an individual visit.
We hope you were still able to enjoy the beauty of Lucerne, and we look forward to welcoming you on another tour in the future—perhaps one that is fully guided.
Best regards
Clara from Best of Switzerland Tours
Bella_K, Sep 2024
The trip was not what I expected. There was no tour guide, the bus dropped us and picked us after 6 hours. I expected the tour to be more interactive like the other tours I purchased from Viator.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Dear Bella,
Thank you very much for joining our Lucerne - Most Charming Swiss Town tour and taking the time to write this review.
As officially stated in the tour description in Viator, our guests are accompanied by the tour guide from Zurich to Lucerne and in the evening from Lucerne back to Zurich. The available time in Lucerne of approx. 6 hours is unguided since it is designed for our guests to explore the city at their own pace. Nevertheless, all our guests receive a comprehensive information booklet at check-in with recommendations of sights and activities and upgrade options.
We hope that you can enjoy the rest of your holidays in Zurich and wish you a nice continuation of your journey. Should you visit Switzerland again, we would love to welcome you back on one of our tours, perhaps a fully guided one.
