Itinerary

In the center of Verona, met up with your knowledgeable local guide and get ready to discover the delights of this northern Italian city. Explore the streets of Verona's historic center, taking in the churches and palaces that have helped make this town a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After some meandering past Castelvecchio, Scaligero Bridge, and Bra Square and learning about the history of the town, make your way over to see the gem of Verona: the ancient Roman arena. Built in AD 30, the arena is very well preserved for being 2,000 years old. Learn about the history of the arena, about how it once could hold up to 30,000 people and the actions that have taken place over the years to keep it so well preserved.

Hear about how the arena not only hosts concerts from international superstars but it's also home of the very popular Verona Arena Festival, a summertime opera celebration that draws classical music lovers from all over the world.

After taking some photos of the arena, head to Juliet's House (La Casa di Giulietta), the structure that inspired Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet.'

Travel Through the Amazing History of Verona

GaryAlfred_H, Jan 2026
We had a very good tour of the city of Verona. We had a small group of people and a very good guide. Our guide, Frank, was very knowledgeable and full of good humour. The history of Verona spans more than two thousand years and there are sites to see from every period of its history. The coliseum is in amazing condition and is a wonder you shouldn't miss. This tour is well worth the time and money, and I encourage everyone to go on this tour.

Book it!

We saw and learned so much about Verona!

Chris_B, Jan 2026
We saw and learned so much about Verona's history, from roman times to present. Without this tour how would we have ever seen the ruins of the original roman wall and part of a home, inside a Benetton Store. We will look forward to soon seeing the closing ceremonies of the olympics in the roman amphitheater and can say "we were there".

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Hi Chris, thank you fro your review! Those hidden gems like the Roman ruins in the Benetton store are exactly why we love showing people around! And how exciting that you'll be watching the Olympics with a whole new perspective now 😊

Verona tour with Priscilla

Ryan_D, Jan 2026
Quick but thorough overview of the history and sights of Verona. Our guide, Priscilla, is a local and knew the history of Verona and wider Italy in great detail. Completely fluent in English having spent a few years in New Zealand when she was young but the rest of her life before and after in Verona, she was charming and fun to spend a few hours with. She also very kindly looked after my elderly mother. Highly recommend!

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Hi Ryan, thank you for you review! Priscilla sounds like she was the perfect guide for your group! Thank you for spending those hours with us ☺️

Great introduction to the city and its history

Marcus_H, Dec 2025
We had a city walking tour booked at 10 so we picked up our coats and walked outside in to the chilly air. The meeting point was only a few minutes away so Deb sat in a café and I wandered around to see what was nearby and was shocked to turn the corner and see a huge medieval fortress. Luckily, when we started our tour with Isabel that was the first stop although we didn't actually go inside. The castle was the Castelvecchio and I will be returning tomorrow to visit it properly! It also had a wonderful bridge attached that had been destroyed by the Germans in 1945 and lovingly restored by the locals by 1951. Next to the castle was the Arch of Gavi, a 1st century AD Roman arch that was originally outside of the city on the Via Postumia road. Napoleon demolished the arch in 1805 and it was then moved to its current location and reconstructed in 1931. I'm not quite sure Napoleon had such a thing for destroying Italian cultural heritage but he was French. The tour continued through the old Roman streets, past the Porta Borsari - the marble front of the original Roman city gate, the brickwork behind and the towers having long since decayed. After walking past a variety of beautiful buildings we reached Piazza dell Erbe, the square we were in yesterday with the beautiful 15th century frescoes on the buildings. We turned down a side street in to another pretty square, Piazza dei Signori, which had a stunning Venetian palace as well as the entrance to the Torre dei Lamberte viewpoint. The architecture changed for the splendid tombs of the Scala family, a series of 14th century outdoor mausoleums in an incredible Gothic style, housing the remains of the medieval ruling family. We also nipped in to the courtyard of Juliet's family house to see the 1930s creation, using an Egyptian sarcophagus, that is such a successful marketing achievement. The tour ended at Verona's arena, the 1st century AD amphitheatre that predates the Colosseum by about 30 years. Although the outer tier of the building has long since been looted the two inner tiers that remain are still imposing and impressive. Having recently been restored they are in continual use both as a tourist attraction and also for the Verona Opera Festival, where 13,000 people can sit in the arena and listen to the music.

Isabella was a wonderful guide and told us a lot about the city's history. One of the biggest pros when booking is the fact you get to skip the line at both the Casa di Giulietta and the Arena with your guide. And yes, I recommend booking both trips. Seeing the Arena from the inside was the highlight.
