What To Expect
Immerse yourself in beautiful scenery and rich cultural traditions in the Arctic during this dinner and Northern Lights viewing experience with Sami Reindeer Herders. It’s a great opportunity to get a better sense for the indigenous cultures of Scandinavia and see a spectacular display courtesy of Mother Nature.
Leave Tromso in the evening, traveling to the Sami’s reindeer camp outside of town. Once you arrive, you’ll have time explore the site with your hosts, including an opportunity to feed the reindeer. Once you’ve worked up an appetite from completing your “chores,” head to the camp’s central “lavuu” (traditional Sami tent) to join the tribe for a delicious three-course dinner. As you eat, enjoy lively conversation with your hosts, including an introduction to the Sami belief system and their spiritual connection to the Northern Lights.
With your belly and mind now full from the evening’s entertainment and food, head outside to have a look at the colorful waves of light that frequently dance across the nighttime sky. With any luck, weather conditions will be right to enjoy this mystical nocturnal display. You’ll travel back to central Tromso before midnight to finish your trip.
Please note: this trip is seasonal
What to bring: Warm clothes (at least two layers), gloves and hat and good winter boots.

This was hands down one of the most magical experiences of my entire trip.
From the moment we arrived, the setting felt straight out of a winter postcard — snow everywhere, the calm Arctic night, and reindeer all around you. Feeding the reindeer was such a highlight because there are so many of them, and you’re literally walking among them while they come right up to you. It’s one of those moments that feels unreal in the best way.
The Sami dinner was cozy, comforting, and honestly the perfect way to warm up after being outside. On top of that, learning about Sami culture made the whole experience feel deeper and more meaningful — not just a “tour,” but something that helps you connect with the place and its traditions.
And then… the Northern Lights showed up right when we stepped outside to feed the reindeer. Like… casually. As if they were part of the schedule. It felt like the universe just decided to give us a gift.
No “meh” moments at all — this tour is a full 10/10 and I’d recommend it to anyone: couples, solo travelers, families, friends… everyone should experience this at least once.

Wonderful experience feeding the reindeers and learning about the history and culture of Sami people. Would highly recommend.
Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you for your wonderful review!
We’re so happy to hear that you enjoyed feeding the reindeer and learning about Sami history and culture. It means a lot to us that you would recommend the experience to others.
We’d love to see you again in Tromsø one day! 🦌✨
Jodie_R, Mar 2026
We went late March, feed the reindeer which was a great experience. The 3 course dinner was basic, salmon salad, reindeer stew and chocolate cake. Hot drinks (unlimited) were provided. The food was okay but not great. The best part of the tour experience was hearing about the North Sami culture back at the main hut (teepee). This was enjoyable.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Dear Jodie,
Thank you for your review!
We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed feeding the reindeer and that learning about Sami culture was a highlight of your visit.
We truly appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you again for another cultural experience in the future.
Welcome back to Tromsø! ✨
David_A, Mar 2026
The overall trip is about four hours long. You spend one hour feeding the reindeer - which is very interesting! Then, an hour eating what feels like an uninspiring mass-produced meal, and then another hour listening to a disappointing presentation about Sami. The fourth hour is spent traveling to and from the camp. Overall, it's a lot of time and money to feed a reindeer.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Dear David,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
We’re pleased that you had the chance to feed the reindeer, it’s always wonderful to see our guests connecting with these gentle animals!
We are sorry to hear that some parts of the experience didn't meet your expectations. The lunch we offer is a traditional meal, which is a reindeer stew called bidos. There is always a vegetarian alternative available as well.
Your feedback is very important to us, and we truly value hearing your thoughts on all aspects of your visit. Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly at info@tromsoarcticreindeer.com if you have any further feedback, suggestions, or questions, we would be happy to hear from you and continue the conversation.
We look forward to welcoming you again in Tromsø!

Greetings from Tromsø, welcome back ❣️

Our evening at the reindeer camp was a memorable look into Sami culture. Our hosts were very gracious and informative, sharing stories and traditional joik songs that made the evening very interesting. We really enjoyed the opportunity to feed the reindeer; they are friendly and it was a unique way to start the night.
The food provided was a good introduction to local flavors. We were served a smoked salmon salad, followed by Bidos (a traditional reindeer stew), and finished with chocolate cake and hot drinks. It was a nice way to experience traditional customs in a cozy setting by the fire.
However, the transportation was unorganized. The pickup was confusing as we couldn't locate the "blue jacket" guides inside the terminal until well after the 5:40 PM designated time. Additionally, the bus for the return trip was quite late picking us up from the camp. If the logistics were more organized, this would easily be a five-star experience.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Dear Vickie,
Thank you very much for your thoughtful review.
We’re so glad to hear that you enjoyed the cultural aspects of the evening, from feeding the reindeer to listening to the joik and learning more about Sami traditions.
We’re truly sorry to hear about the confusion during pickup and the delay with the return transportation. This is not the experience we want for our guests, and your feedback is very important in helping us improve our logistics and communication.
Please feel free to contact us at info@tromsoarcticreindeer.com if you would like to share any additional details. We would really appreciate the opportunity to follow up.
Thank you again for visiting us and for sharing your experience, and welcome back to Tromsø! ✨

200 plus reindeer and wonderful
Sami hosts telling stories after dinner - great night out. The vegetarian food was good if you don’t want to eat reindeer!

Great experience overall — efficient, well organized, and a lot of fun. We loved feeding the reindeer, sampling the different foods, and learning more about Sami culture. The bus ride was smooth, though a bit clearer signage at the pickup point would have helped people know where to go. Otherwise everything went smoothly. Highly recommend!

It was an ok tour! Stuff were friendly, a lot of reeders to feed, food was good! Lovely spot for pics
Jayne_B, Jan 2025
Lots of reindeers to feed buckets of pellets to. Some were a bit rowdy though with imposing antlers that were close to peoples’ faces so not for nervous people/children. Three course meal served in plastic bowls/plates was ok served in large hut with log fire. Short talk by Sami reindeer herder interesting. Northern lights mention in the title is misleading as you simply have a chance to see them because it’s dark and you are outside - nothing more than that. Overall enjoyable.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Dear Jayne,
Thank you for your visit and a review!
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed meeting our reindeers, and they do indeed have different personalities.
Welcome back to Tromsø Arctic Reindeer!

Fantastic experience. Lovely helpful staff, we loved feeding the reindeer and hearing about the Sami people. Highly recommend
EHSAN_G, Dec 2024
Fantastic experience. The Sami were very interesting and the food was tasty. A great way to spend Christmas feeding the reindeer. Would recommend. Team were very accommodating. Worth every penny!
Corey_G, Dec 2024
The pickup was simple and easy with relatively clear directions in the email. About a 40min bus ride brought us to the camp. Brought inside out of the cold for a quick discussion regarding how to feed the reindeer before heading out and being allowed to feed the reindeer as much as you like, which I thought was great, given the time frame your allowed to feed them, you will go through a couple buckets worth. After, heading back inside, awaiting you is an offer of hot drinks and snacks whilst you wait for dinner. The dinner offering was great and fast, the staff were very kind and attentive to those with dietary requirements such as vegetarian, I do not believe GF bread was offered however, for those that are gluten intolerant. However the stew, salad and cake were all delicious. The story telling after was also quite interesting. Overall, great tour and the staff were great!
Gabriela_V, Dec 2024
Loved it! The whole experience was great.
There were a lot of reindeers enough to everyone to feed them.
Maybe I would suggest to improve the toilets.
Manihi_K, Nov 2024
Great experience to feed the reindeer and learn about Sami culture! Great Sami host and we even saw the northern lights
Lorne_B, Nov 2024
While having the amazing three course meal, suddenly interrupted with a call that the northern light were out, we happened to be lucky enough to see some incredible lights,
The setting for the meal was just right, with the open fire, the great wood feel of the building. The furs, the raindeer stew was great, and the feeding the remainder was fun, plus hearing all about the Sami culture, overall a fantastic night.
Katarzyna_G, Mar 2024
A nice way to see reindeers up close and to learn a bit about the Saami people and their culture - we especially enjoyed the joik (song). We were super lucky to see a little bit of aurora during the visit in the camp.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Dear Katarzyna,
Thank you for visiting us Tromsø!
We are happy to hear that you had a delightful evening with us and even got a chance to see the Aurora show ✨
Welcome back!
Kristen_P, Feb 2024
I went on this tour solo and had a nice time. Feeding the reindeer was fun and made me feel like a kid again. I think that activity lasts too long, so I waited inside by the fire with a hot chocolate until dinner time. The dinner was tasty. The Sami reindeer herder’s story was probably my favorite part, it was really interesting to hear about that job and culture.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
Dear Kristen,
Thank you for visiting us on your solo journey and sharing a fantastic review!
We are happy to hear that our reindeer experience made you feel like a kid again and brought you positive emotions.
Welcome back to Tromsø Arctic Reindeer! 🦌
Dina_P, Jan 2024
Nice and kind program, nice people, must have if you love animals and culture. :)
The reindeers are cute and a little stubborn, and also beautiful creatures.
Response from Host, Feb 2024
Dear Dina,
Thank you for sharing your review with us!
It sounds like you had a fun time meeting our reindeers 🦌
Welcome back!
Klaudia_B, Jan 2024
The most memorable and worth to experience was the Sami talking. It was interesting, funny, lots of facts and so friendly at once. We really enjoyed it. The feeding was nice to try but some of us were a bit uncomfortable between hungry pushy reindeers. The food wasnt bad but the time inbetweenn activities was too long and there was not enough space near the fireplace, all of us 4 were freezing and nobody bothered to change. It would be nice to be in a smaller group so everybody would be able to get warm.
Response from Host, Feb 2024
Dear Klaudia,
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us!
We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the Sami storytelling part of the tour and got a chance to learn more about the local culture.
We are sorry to hear about the discomfort you experienced due to the Arctic weather. We always suggest our guests to dress up warmly and wear several layers for protection from the cold, and we also offer overalls and hot drinks to warm up.
We hope you were still able to enjoy the tour, and we look forward to meeting you again! 🦌
bahar_m, Mar 2023
Family friendly great story. Great food you get to try the reindeer meat for the first time. I didn’t like it I wouldn’t have it again but the rest of my family liked it. Smells too strong for me. But they do have the option of vegetarian. Hot beverages offered. Great fire pit. Didn’t see the northern lights but still worth it. An adventure needs to be done.
Response from Host, Mar 2023
Dear Bahar,
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us!
We are happy to hear that you had a fun and memorable family trip with us.
We do indeed offer a vegetarian and vegan meal option as well - we understand that everyone is different.
Hopefully you will visit us another time, and have a chance to see the magnificent Northern Lights! :)
Dr_S, Mar 2023
This what the most memorable experience of my life meeting the Sami woman and feeding the reindeer and then after it snowed all day we saw the Northern lights for a bit and the food was so good. Thankyou for an amazing time!

Tetiana_L, Feb 2023
Very interesting tour. It started right on time at 6pm. Just 25 min drive to the location. Upon arrival, we had 2 hrs to feed reindeer and take as much photos as we wished. Those who finished earlier, went to the lavvy and had hot drinks with cookies. Then a very nice dinner was served. It consisted of a salmon salad, reindeer stew (or vegetarian option but we did not opt for it) and a chocolate cake. Everything was served very fast and was delicious. From 9-10 pm a local sami guy told us about the sami culture around an open fire. By 10:30 pm we were back to the hotel. Overall experience was very positive.
Response from Host, Mar 2023
Dear Tetiana,
Thank you for your kindest review!
We are so glad that you enjoyed every part of the activity and had a memorable evening with us.
We hope to see you again soon - welcome!
Merissa_F, Jan 2023
We loved everything about this night. The reindeer feeding was very fun. They can be quite boisterous at times though. The three course meal was fabulous and then listening to the Sami girls after explain their culture and even joik for us was something phenomenal. Just an added bonus was that the Northern Lights came out just as we were finishing up! Such a fantastic experience!
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Merissa,
It was a pleasure to read your review! Many thanks for your kind words from all of us at Tromsø Arctic Reindeer.
We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed all parts of the activity - reindeer feeding, a 3-course meal and Sami storytelling, and also got a chance to see the beautiful Aurora ✨
We would love to meet you again in Tromsø soon - welcome!
Sam_M, Jan 2023
Very well organised. Hosts very friendly and allowed us enough time. No rushing and allowed to take our own time. We upgraded to a sled ride which was really enjoyable. Plenty of time to feed the reindeer as well. The reindeer are nice and peaceful and enjoyed watching the dynamics between them. Able to go into one of the huts for hot drinks whenever we felt cold. Food was tasty with veggie option which was nice. Sami people really nice told all about their culture and the reindeer and finished with a traditional Sami song (joike) definitely would recommend.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Sam,
Many thanks for your kind review! We are happy to hear that you felt the trip was well-organised and you had time to participate in activities at your own pace.
Special thank you for your comment regarding the Sami storytelling and the meals.
It was a pleasure to have you as our guest, and we are looking forward to seeing you again soon!
cdenicola, Feb 2020
Feeding the reindeer was a highlight of my trip. The reindeer stew (yes, I played with my food before eating it) was delicious. Throughly enjoyed the talk given by the Sami leader. Never knew reindeer antlers could be soft and fuzzy. This is a great value for your money. P

It was very intersting to see reindeers and to feed them. We enjoyed to hear the Sami guide talking about his culture.
Caroline_C, Jan 2018
This tour was really fun and informative. We got to feed and interact with the reindeer it was so cool. The food was so delicious, three courses from the land. I would highly recommend this tour. We even saw the northern lights!
Tanya S, Dec 2017
The tour was amazing. The dinner and reindeer were unbelievable; but learning about the Sami culture and learning a traditional song, with the entire group joining in to sing it was unforgettable!!!
