Itinerary

Begin your tour with a pickup at your hotel, the port, the bus station, or the train station in Taormina. Then, travel out of the city to the Rifugio Sapienza—a vantage point boasting panoramic views over Italy’s volcanic landscape. Stop at vantage points along the way, and listen as your guide sheds light on the Silvestri Craters and the region’s past volcanic eruptions.

From the Rifugio Sapienza enjoy an optional trek (payable locally at own expense) into the Parco dell’Etna to an altitude of 6,561 feet (2,000 meters) above sea level. From here, continue onward via cable car and off-road vehicle (payable locally at own expense) to the Torre del Filosofo at 9,514 feet (2,900 meters). Marvel at sweeping views over the craters and ancient lava flows of Mt. Etna, then return to Rifugio Sapienza by minibus and cable car.

Next, strap on your helmet and explore a lava cave in the Parco dell’Etna with your guide. Along the way, admire ancient rock formations in the molten landscape and gain insight into the Parco dell’Etna’s complex geology.

Follow your guide along the winding trails and admire the ruins of Francavilla Castle. As you explore, discover rich lava formations eroded over millions of years by the gorges’ running waters.

When your time in the Alcantara Gorges comes to an end, return to your starting point in Taormina to conclude your tour.

So pleased we booked this trip, the whole day was excellent. Our guide Simone was fantastic, he shared so much interesting information not just about Etna and Alcantara but Sicilian culture, food, music and other must see places to visit. His energy was boundless and he kept us entertained all day with his humour and went out of his way to ensure we had an amazing day.

My wife and I had a great time. Lorenzo was a fantastic guide. Very knowledgable, thoughtful, and organized, in addition to being hilarious and really funny in his storytelling. The tour was well paced and we learned lots exploring the craters at Mt. Etnas base. Gorge, cave , and tasting visit were very nice also. Was nice to purchase a little more food at the restaurant if desired. Generally the guidance to bring additional layers should be followed as it can be quite windy and meaningfully colder up the mountain. Running shoes work well if weather is fair to slightly inclimate.

This tour was fantastic. Eduardo, the tour guide was extremely knowledgable, very friendly and great photographer 😃 He was able to quickly and efficiently adjust the timetable to make sure we got the most out of the day with the ever changing weather! I’d definitely recommend, I’d even do the tour again myself!

I wouldn't recommend for those with walking difficulties however we had a fabulous trip...mt Etba was everything and more! We did an added ATV experience at 2000 ft but I wish id done the sky lift up to 3000 ft.....next time!

100% recommend. We had a great day Carmelo was a fantastic guide and gave us lots of information. The gorges were my favourite part, make sure to bring water shoes so that you can go in as far as possible. The wine and oil tastings were also great and we got to try so many products. Finally at Etna there was a range of options. We chose to stay at the bottom and do a hike around the craters which was great fun!

This is one of our favorites tours. Our guide, Alessandro was very informative and went above and beyond explaining all we saw and did. The gorge, the lava tunnel, Mt Etna, the wine tasting and so much more. Learning about the volcano system and history of volcanic activity was very interesting. Highly recommend this tour.

It was wonderful. The place was quite far from where we stayed but the guide came picked us up from hotel which was convenient for us as we didnt know the roads very well. He was knowledgeable and explained us everything patiently. Definitely recommend. The only thing i would advice is whatever he spoke about during the trip if we could also listen his voice through speakers/headphones or something it would have been nice.. also would have saved him the trouble for repeating himself time to time to different people.

Don’t hesitate! Book the experience! Tommaso was THE BEST! He taught us so much about the volcano, the surrounding area, and geology. He was an absolute pleasure to be with. We were extremely lucky as it was just my husband and myself so we truly had a private experience. The tasting was wonderful. We drove out to the grotto and it was closed but we didn’t even mind! We just loved being with Tommaso and learning so much about Sicily. It was a wonderful day and we will definitely do it again. The experience itself is purely based on the weather and what Etna is doing that day. For us, we were not able to go all the way up but again, we didn’t mind… just gives us a reason to come back and experience it again. Tommaso gets 100 stars for sure! We were picked up and dropped off at the door of our resort, it couldn’t have been easier. Exceeded all expectations! We loved it!

What a fantastic day. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating. We trekked with her instead of the alternative options for Mt Etna. Beautiful views. The tasting was wonderful in a lovely restaurant. Alcantara River was a bit crowded but still an awesome natural wonder. We returned exhausted and happy.

I highlycrecommend going on the walking tour qt 2000 meters rather than opting to go to the higher altitude of 3000 meters with the cable car, etc. Etna is better appreciated at that level. Magnificent views. Tommaso is a geologist and opened up the landscape for our appreciation. You will certainly enjoy the lava caves and the Alcantara river will be the perfect way to end a very full day.

Good but a few problems

The guide was knowledgeable but we couldn’t visit the cave as there was a difficult drop to get down to it . This wasn’t mentioned in the itinerary. We also found the extra prices at the top to be very expensive. Also not suitable for people less able. This should be stated somewhere in the details. The guide did take us over to the lower craters though and gave a good explanation. Then there are many steps down to the gorge. Again not mentioned but there was a lift but it was 9 euros return to do it. Profiteering from disabled people I feel. Then when we got back to our hotel we found the same trip for nearly half the price. That surprised us very much. However the wine and liquor tasting was very enjoyable and when I managed to get down to the gorge it was beautiful and the water lovely and cool to wander in

Pick up on time and an enjoyable ride up to Etna. Our guide, Valentina, was very accommodating and knowledgeable, and ensured to answer all of our questions, as well as let us wonder in silence, enjoying the nature and views. The cave was smaller than expected but we were informed that the location rotates depending on safety and the largest of caves was now closed to public. Walk around Etna lower parts was good, but if you're expecting to go all the way to the top, this is at an extra cost and you should allow extra 30mins travel time, therefore less time enjoying the views. The tasting experience was quick but yum, with the possibility to buy local products afterwards; note: not all containers are under 100ml so plan ahead with your luggage ;) Alcantara river - WOW! Freezing cold water surrounded by volcanic rock walls - breathtaking! Here Valentina waited for us to walk up to the small waterfall before allowing us an hour of free time (and to dry! - take your swimsuits). Great day!

Francesco our guide was really good and very knowledgeable telling us all sorts of info and history on the journey. The trip up Etna was expensive but worth going, we chose the cable car and bus option. It was nice to have the food tasting and the trip to the gorge afterwards. Take beach shoes, swimsuit and a towel if you want to go in the river. It came up to the tops of our legs in places. Very enjoyable day out

It’s a bold offering to schedule three dramatically different experiences -Mt. Etna, a wine tasting and the Alcantara Gorge- for one day. There’s serious mileage separating them. But it works. It’s an added benefit to see the lovely countryside in addition to the main events. Our guide Tomasso was delightful and kind as some in our group needed special attention. A wonderful day! NOTE: Listen to the advice regarding Etna. She’s not to be taken lightly. Dress appropriately!!!

Well, where to start. Our guide Lorenzo pulled out all the stops for everyone. His knowledge of the area and passion for Mount Etna is astounding. Be prepared for a long day but every second is pure joy. I cannot recommend this trip enough. You will fall in love with the place. I’ve made some friends for life in the group, we all felt like a family.

Enjoyed the whole tour. Opted for the quad biking through the Mt Etna area, not cheap @ €100 but thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want something more educational go for the hike which is free, Simone our guide was a gas !!! ..be prepared if u get him he's full on and very knowledgeable !!
