During our recent Mediterranean cruise, one of the most unforgettable experiences was our one-day tour to Mount Etna from the port of Catania. If you’re docking in Catania and debating how to spend your day—this tour is an absolute must. It’s not just a scenic escape, but an adventure into one of the most powerful natural wonders in Europe.
🚢 Smooth Pickup from the Port
The moment we stepped off our cruise ship, the transition to the tour couldn’t have been easier. Our guide was waiting right at the terminal exit with a clear sign and a friendly smile. Within minutes, our small group was comfortably seated on a modern, air-conditioned minibus. The drive itself was scenic, with views of the Sicilian countryside gradually giving way to the dramatic slopes of Etna.
🗣️ Expert Guiding & Fascinating Insights
Our guide, Lucia, was exceptional—an expert on both geology and local culture. Her passion for Sicily and its fiery mountain was obvious, and she made the entire journey captivating with stories of past eruptions, mythology, and the daily life of people who live in Etna’s shadow. She struck the perfect balance between educational and entertaining.
🏞️ The Ascent to Mt. Etna
As we ascended Etna’s slopes, we passed ancient lava flows, vineyards growing in rich volcanic soil, and quaint mountain villages. The scenery changed dramatically with elevation—from lush greenery to stark, lunar-like landscapes.
We stopped at the Silvestri Craters, located at about 2,000 meters (6,500 feet). Standing on those massive craters—now dormant, but once spewing molten rock—was awe-inspiring. The cool mountain air, the crunch of black volcanic gravel underfoot, and the panoramic views of the Ionian coast below were absolutely breathtaking.
There was time to hike around the crater rim for anyone who wanted to explore a bit more or take photos. For those less inclined to walk, there were cafes and shops nearby where you could sip espresso and take it all in.
🚠 Optional Cable Car & 4x4 Upgrade
Several guests in our group chose to upgrade to the cable car and 4x4 jeep tour, which takes you closer to the summit (weather permitting). Though we personally stayed at the lower craters due to time, those who went higher came back buzzing with excitement and said the views were like something out of a sci-fi movie. It’s a great option if you want the full high-altitude experience.
🍷 Local Flavors & Warm Hospitality
On the way down, we stopped at a family-run agritourism estate nestled on the mountain’s lower slopes. There, we were treated to a tasting of Etna wines, honey, olive oils, and delicious Sicilian treats like arancini and cannoli. The staff were so welcoming—it felt more like being invited into someone’s home than a commercial stop.
⏰ Timing & Return to Port
The tour was perfectly timed. We left the port by mid-morning and were comfortably back with plenty of time before the ship’s departure. The pace was relaxed but efficient, and everything ran smoothly thanks to the professionalism of the guide and driver.
💡 Tips for Fellow Cruisers
• Dress in layers—the weather on Etna can change quickly, and it’s much cooler at the top.
• Wear sturdy shoes—you’ll be walking on uneven volcanic terrain.
• Bring a small daypack for water, sunscreen, and snacks.
• If you’re adventurous and the weather’s good, definitely consider the summit upgrade!
🧡 Final Thoughts
This tour was the perfect mix of nature, adventure, culture, and comfort. Mt. Etna is not just a volcano—it’s a living, breathing piece of Sicily’s identity, and this tour made us feel connected to it in a truly meaningful way.
Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, a geology geek, or just someone looking to experience something truly unforgettable, this one-day Mt. Etna tour from Catania is absolutely worth it. I’d do it again in a heartbeat—and next time, I’ll go all the way to the summit!

Thanks :)

We had a lovely morning tour with an amazing view and a lot of interesting facts about Mount Etna and eruptions of volcanos in general.
Depending on the weather forecast you should definitely bring a jacket. A moderate fitness level and good, closed shoes are advised because the hills of Mount Etna can be quite steep.
Overall a great experience and a decent lunch at the end of the tour.

Giuseppe was a great guide with a lot of knowledge about the history of Mt. Etna. Due to my physical limitations I didn’t do the volcano hike but he was very patient about this.
Celeste_R, Oct 2024
MariElaina was a wonderful knowledgeable and patient guide. Was able to provide much detail to questions. If possible, if she could be mic'd up in the van-hands free as it was difficult to hear in back row of van.

Paulo, our guide was extraordinary. He was very informative and made the experience accessible. The views were amazing. we would highly recommend

We did the morning tour and it made me wonder how people do this tour when the sunsets and visibility of where you are walking is limited. The pictures of Etna online don't do it justice as the vastness of the volcano is not captured unless you see it in person. Our guide Giuseppe was knowledgeable who made good use of available time. We were a small group of only 4 participants which is best for this tour as it would be difficult to keep up or hear guide with large group. Included lunch was convenient and a good option to include. The only negative is the tour company needs to do a better job of preparing participants for the drastic drop in temperature by wearing the proper clothing. This could be a deal breaker for enjoyment of the tour.

Amazing tour! Our guide was so knowledgeable, she taught us about the history of the volcano and even taught us about the recent activity that had been going on in the month prior to our visit. Such a unique experience to see everything covered in ash from recent eruptions. Lunch was fine, but we were hungry from the hike so we didn't care. Definitely recommend!

We were surprised at how much Mount Etna dominates western Sicily. The biggest thrill was hearing the volcanic explosions and seeing the volcanic clouds rising from the peak.

We had a great morning trip to Mt. Etna. Marilena guided us through the many aspects of volcanic activity and the cultural value of this landmark.

I recommend this to everyone who's visiting Catania, the tour was awesome, the guide helpful and patient with everyone. We got to learn about the mount Etna and the history of it and also as a bonus, a nice Sicilian lunch! Totally worth!

Marilena our tour rep was wonderful, she was an asset to the tour. She took her time as I’m not a fast walker. Her knowledge was amazing and she was super nice. Absolutely loved etna, just amazing ✨

It was an amazing experience with a very skillfull and charming guide (Claudia!!).
She made it an experience with a lasting impact on our knowledge of and respect for the vulcano Etna!!

guide with van was at the agreed pick-up location exactly on time. Nice guide with a lot of knowledge (geologically) of Mount Etna. Made it a great day. Lunch is in a kind of tourist restaurant. Moderate in quality. the tasting afterwards is at the gift shop of the tourist restaurant. nice job.
