This was a full moon, and what they don’t tell you is that you can’t see anything when there’s a full moon. Darkness is required. So it was kind of a bust. But a good time and the guides were good. Just picked the wrong day.

This was an amazing experience! It was hard to see the glowing algae due to the bright moon, but our guides were prepared with tarps for us. They were very knowledgable about the local wildlife, and respectful of nature and family. We specifically used Puerto Rico Access Tours.

It was a very poor experience. To paddle a kayak for 20 min, after wait as another 20 min to be covered by tent for 5 min to see plankton and paddle back!! It feels like waste of time and money. This experience good for young kids. Not for adults.

Please don’t listen to all the lame people saying this wasn’t worth it. I have kayaked all over the world and this was a great experience. It was so neat to kayak at night, to hear all the sounds of the mangroves, and of course to see the bioluminescence. Truly unique! We had a blast. Our group ended up being small, only 7 people, which was a plus. I would absolutely recommend booking this!

When they say bring bug spray, what they really mean is they will gather you up “to feed the mosquitos” as they said, literally. Unnecessary exposure. They could have done the instructional in the plaza or parking lot. I have 100+ bites (100% serious) on my body. Bug spray will not touch that. Kayaking at night in the mangroves was the highlight, not the slight glimmer of bioluminescence when you splash the water. Now I understand why the instructions and tour details were so vague. The instructors were nice but a group of 21 double kayaks is way too many. And that was just our group. There were at least 5 others. Would I do it again, no. My daughter and I are suffering with allergic reactions and then I read there is a public health crises of mosquito born illness right now (2025). Something not advertised. Kayak at your own risk.

Be prepared to get soaked. But it was very fun. Our guides, Joe and Emily, were excellent, very knowledgeable.
Heidi_P, Oct 2025
This excursion was the most disappointing one of our trip to PR. When we got to the bay we were given a wet tarp to put over our heads and still barely saw anything
Maria_R, Aug 2025
It was fun and exciting. Everyone was very helpful since it was our first time kayaking experience I really recommend it.
Luke_J, Jul 2025
The guides were very professional and good at what they did. The equipment was good quality. For future travelers, the phase of the moon is very important, don’t go during a full moon if you want to see the bioluminescence. The amount of boats going to the lagoon is a bit obnoxious and detracted from my experience. Wayyy too many people!
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Thank you for recognizing the professionalism of our guides and the quality of our equipment. We understand how the overall atmosphere can be affected by factors beyond our control, such as moon phases and the number of boats operating in the lagoon.
Bioluminescence is best seen during darker nights, so we always recommend avoiding full moon dates when possible for the brightest display. As one of the few regulated outfitters for Laguna Grande, we operate under strict guidelines to ensure safety and minimize impact, though there are multiple permitted operators in the area, which can make the lagoon feel busy during peak nights.
For travelers seeking a quieter experience, we suggest booking during weekdays, avoiding holidays, and checking moon phase charts in advance. We do our best to keep our groups organized and safe so that guests can fully enjoy the magic of the bioluminescence.
We appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you again during a darker and less crowded night for the most memorable experience.

Perfect for inexperienced kayaker. My guide made me feel safe and that allowed me to fully enjoy the experience. So peaceful and beautiful to glide through the water at night and see the starry sky. The bio luminescent was a once in a lifetime sight to see.
Douglas_L, Apr 2025
This was a really fun tour. You should be in decent physical condition to do it as the return trip is against the current and can be demanding. Seeing the creatures glow was amazing. Our tour driver and guides were excellent and very knowledgeable.
Stacie_F, Apr 2025
they pick you up at a certain time and when you get to the place , you have to continue to wait . the paddle out to the spot wasn’t bad it was 2 miles and we basically floated w the current. when we finally made it, had to wait again & bc it wasn’t dark enough from the lights on the island they put tarps over us . the kayaks was tied side by side so you only had enough room to put your hand in and splash . you could see some glow but not a lot , definitely not what i was expecting . the paddle back - HORRIBLE. fighting current for 2 miles , getting piled up on top of other kayaks bc of the current and didn’t have enough room to paddle to get to get out of the pile up . the guides say they will tell you ahead of time for turns and low laying branch’s - they do not .
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Thank you for sharing your experience. We understand the tour can feel challenging for some guests, especially when natural factors like current strength, moonlight, and weather conditions come into play.
The two-mile paddle each way is part of the adventure through the mangrove channel to reach Laguna Grande, and while the current often helps on the way in, it can be more demanding on the way out, depending on tides and weather. Our guides are there to assist throughout the route, and safety measures such as tying kayaks together and using tarps are standard practices used by all regulated operators to enhance visibility of the bioluminescence while ensuring group safety in low-light conditions.
While we do our best to provide guidance on turns and low branches, visibility can vary, and conditions may require closer group formations for safety. We encourage travelers to be prepared for a moderate to active paddling experience and to check moon phases and weather when booking for the best bioluminescence visibility.
We hope you’ll consider joining us again during calmer conditions for a smoother experience.

Poor communication about transportation to and from tour. We weren’t informed of our pickup time until 90 min before they arrived. We had already made subsequent plans since we hadn’t heard from our transportation. Note the business is closed on Sat so you cannot reach them on Sat. We were told they would call us back on Sun but didn’t hear from them until too late. No refund was given.
Response from Host, Apr 2025
Thank you for your feedback.
The instructions on your ticket clearly state that guests must call us directly to confirm pickup details. This policy exists because, in many cases, guests provide incorrect or non-working phone numbers—such as landlines or office numbers—which prevent us from reaching them. To avoid miscommunication, we ask guests to call us to finalize pickup logistics.
Our team is closed on Saturdays, as noted, but we do operate on Sundays and return calls accordingly. We understand plans can change, but it's important to follow the communication guidelines outlined in the booking confirmation to avoid these situations.
As the transportation was dispatched as scheduled and no cancellation was requested within the allowed time, a refund could not be issued. We appreciate your understanding.

It was fairly dark evening and we still needed tarps over our heads to see the bioluminescence. It was underwhelming. Also, there were a group of girls in our group screaming every time a fish jumped out of the water. I would highly recommend the tour group explain what people might encounter in case those things might frighten them.
The kayak trip was nice and the stars were beautiful, but not much to see in terms of bioluminescence.
Bradley_S, Mar 2025
This was a magical experience. The night sky was filled with stars and the water was full of tiny bioluminescence stars as well. There is a bit of a kayaks that needs to be done before you enter the bay, but well worth the effort.
Emilee_Y, Mar 2025
Kayaking out to the bay was fun. Then you sit and relax for the sun to go down. What I didn’t expect is for them to hook all the boats together and then you put a tarp over your head. I’m pretty sure they use the tarp every time because we were there on one of the darkest nights of the year but because of the buildings near by with lights on you have to have more darkness. Because all the boats were hooked together you had to keep pushing the boat beside you away so you could splash the water to see the glow. As you are pushing it away someone else in the row is pushing it towards you. Fingers were smashed in the process! Not a pleasant time. The best time of the whole trip was going back thru the mangroves in darkness. Thats when I could experience the glow more. I wish they would let us stop in the mangroves and splash the water but they don’t, they make you keep moving. That we be a better spot to exploit because it much darker there. It was a cool experience but I would say it really wasn’t worth the money. It looks nothing like the beautiful pictures online.

Overall this was a good experience. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about the bio bay and we end up seeing a lot of bioluminescent activity. The guides were very good about teaching us about the ecology of the area but not as good at the actual guiding. The trip back down the canal in the dark could have been better facilitated. We never saw one of the guides nor could we see who we were supposed to be following. As a result we hit a few trees and it just kind of detracted from an otherwise great experience. The transportation to and from San Juan was well organized and the company overall was good to work with.
Elizabeth_C, Feb 2025
Captains Joe, AJ, Jaime and Nichie were knowledgeable and very helpful guides. The tour was breath taking and amazing!
Dan_O, Feb 2025
Experienced guides led us through the channel to the lagoon. We were able to store our backpack with dry clothes at launch site.
Paul_F, Feb 2025
Very fun trip. Kayaking was wonderful going through the mangrove forest. The bioluminescents were sparkling like Tinkerbell's sparkles. I wish the new landing buildings included larger restrooms. Only three stalls for ladies and one was out of order. Long lines to use only the woman's restrooms. Need changing stalls.
Judy_S, Feb 2025
First, I wanna say that the pick up at our hotel and the entire transportation was flawless. Smooth and easy without any issues. The experience itself was lacking to say the least. You could not see any bioluminescence. The crew put a tarp over us to block out the moon light and you still really couldn’t see anything. Apparently the best times to do this are in the summertime, the months of June, July and August. It would have been nice to know that February isn’t a good time. Total waste of money and time. Would not recommend it unless you’re in the summer months.

Very knowledgeable guides and great experience. We used a tarp to see bioluminescence and we also got to hold a jellyfish! Had a great night!!
Seth_P, Feb 2025
If you enjoy kayaking you should definitely do this. We came around a full moon so we were not expecting much, but the guides provided tarps so we could see the bioluminescence. The tour guides were great. We would have enjoyed this more if they did this tour in smaller groups. We also had to walk to the pickup location at another hotel.
Pete_B, Jan 2025
Bright moon really diminishes the experience. Kayak backrest was uncomfortable. Guides were friendly and moderately knowledgeable. Ok experience.
Karri_B, Jan 2025
The tour I thought would be the highlight ended up being my least favorite. This was mostly because I was traveling with my adult son and the two of us were put with a group of 20 HS students on their senior trip. They spent the entire tour yelling and carrying on, not following instructions, crashing into us and creating chaos. One of their boats got lost and we had to wait at least 15-20 minutes before the guides could show us the bioluminescence in the water. By then I was so annoyed, it was hard to enjoy myself. The experience itself is underwhelming as it’s a long kayak trip in the dark and bugs to sit under a tarp to see the sparks in the water for only a few minutes.
Louis_D, Nov 2024
I have been to this place several times in the past and it's always been a great experience.
When we arrived I asked the tour guides how the bioluminescence organisms were lighting up lately.
Once we were on our way they admitted that they have not been lighting up for over a week because of the weather and we may get lucky to have the experience.
When we got to the Bay the organisms were absolutely dormant and our experience was not what we paid for.
This tour should have been canceled in advance since they knew that the organisms we're not active as expected. From speaking to friends locally they've told me that this has happened before and it's unacceptable. I'm going to request a refund.

The bioluminescence were fascinating and the kayak through the mangoes e was full of night noises. It felt a bit rushed though.
Tejal_P, Oct 2024
What a great experience. The guides were excellent and helped us when we bumped into some trees early on. The bioluminescent was incredible to see. We got transport from San Juan so it was very convenient. Highly recommend!!
Joseph_c, Oct 2024
Pros: transportation offered and convenient, air conditioned too. Organized and very friendly service. Kayaking felt safe and was not super vigorous. Guides informative
Cons. Bit buggy when not moving both on land and in the water. Transport was an hour and a bit bumpy.
We’d never done anything like this so we didn’t know what to expect. In my head I’m picturing a glowing bay. Apparently the bioluminescence doesn’t happen unless you agitate the water so you only see it when you paddle or put your hand in to move the water around. Still quite cool. Be aware it is VERY dark especially on the way back. We liked that but maybe not for everyone. That said never felt unsafe. 3 guides for about 15 of us. (Emily AJ and Joe). We’d do it again!
Response from Host, Oct 2024
Thank you for joining us on the biobay tour and for taking the time to review your experience. We’re delighted that you enjoyed the organization, convenience, and care we put into making this a special trip. Our guides, like Emily, AJ, and Joe, are dedicated to ensuring a safe, informative, and enjoyable experience for all guests.
We understand that the natural experience of bioluminescence can be different from what many first-time visitors expect. The subtle glow that comes alive through movement is an incredible phenomenon, though not always as visually intense as imagined.
We’re committed to delivering an exceptional experience each time, and a 5-star review is what we aim for when everything goes well. We hope this helps future guests understand the tour's unique nature and appreciate the magical setting under natural conditions. Thank you again, and we hope to see you on another adventure soon!
