- Guests receive exact meeting or pick-up instructions within 24 hours after booking through the Viator operator chat. If not received, please contact us at least 24 hours before your tour
- Maximum waiting time after scheduled meeting or pick-up time is 5 minutes
- Cut-off times are based on local experience time
- Suitable for beginner, intermediate, and advanced surfers with coaching adapted to skill level and ocean conditions
- Surf lessons require basic comfort in the water and moderate physical activity
- Wetsuits available upon request during winter months in XL, LG, M, and SM
- Travelers requesting specific surfboard sizes or fiberglass boards should contact us at least 24 hours in advance
- Instructor ratio 1:3
- Observer/companion spots require advance reservation and additional transportation fee. Observer option does not include surfboard or surf lesson participation
- Surf lessons operate seasonally approximately from March 15 through November 15 based on seasonal swell conditions
- Morning departures are usually recommended for cleaner and more consistent surf conditions
- This experience requires favorable weather conditions. If canceled due to unsafe weather, ocean conditions, or operational restrictions, guests will be offered an alternative date or full refund
- No locker facilities are available, but belongings may usually remain inside the transportation vehicle during the activity
- Not recommended for travelers with back problems, pregnancy, or serious heart conditions
- Participants under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not allowed
- Medical refund requests require an official same-day doctor’s certificate and prior notification before activity start time
- This tour/activity will have a maximum of 20 travelers

This was so much fun! Emilio and Marco had their work cut out for them with us, all beginners, and they were fantastic!! Our lesson was 2 hours long, but there were a lot of waves and we were all completely exhausted after 1 hour. This was a great time and I am so glad we did it!

This activity is not for all levels as described. They will push you into every wave regardless of your experience level. Instructor pushed me into the wave and I immediately got hit by someone's board in the lower leg. It caused tenderness pain and swelling. I've never had that happen before.
It's physically demanding because the waves break close to the shore so you have short rides and then paddle back out. Also you may find yourself on a shorter board than you're used to like I was which is also extra work.
I was able to make it work with my Carnival cruise. All in all if you want to surf on your excursion this is a way to make it possible.
I did enjoy kicking it with the staff and other surfers.

We’d like to clarify a few points for future readers. Our surf lessons welcome beginners through experienced surfers, but ocean conditions change every day. At Costa Azul, where we surf, the breaking point and wave shape depend entirely on the swell, tide, and wind, so every session is different. Surfers who are familiar with other breaks, such as Waikiki or point breaks, may find Costa Azul to be a very different experience.
Regarding equipment, we ask guests before the lesson if they have previous surfing experience and, in our confirmation messages, we invite experienced surfers to let us know their preferred board size so we can prepare the most suitable equipment. In general, experienced surfers tend to prefer shorter boards rather than larger ones, but we're always happy to accommodate specific requests whenever possible.
We're also sorry to hear about the collision with another surfer's board. Unfortunately, surfing is an ocean sport where other surfers share the lineup, and despite careful supervision and safety briefings, unexpected situations can occasionally occur. Our instructors are always focused on positioning guests as safely as possible and adapting the lesson to the day's conditions.

One of the best feelings during surf lessons in Los Cabos is that moment when everything clicks and you start standing up consistently, so hearing that you caught numerous waves makes us smile. Costa Azul can be such a great place to learn because it gives beginners the chance to build confidence while still experiencing real ocean waves in the Sea of Cortez.
We also appreciate you mentioning the pickup and overall service. We know vacation time is valuable, so we always try to make the experience smooth, relaxed, and easy from the moment we pick guests up to the last wave of the session.

The directions to the meeting place were not accurate. However, they were prompt with electronic communication responses.
Hugo and Sol were very good with our kids during the lessons.
I think having a ratio of 1 instructor to 2 customers would game been much better and would have allowed us many more runs.

We’re sorry about the confusion with directions and will review that to make it clearer. Regarding the lesson, our standard ratio is 1 instructor for every 3 participants, which allows us to maintain safety while adapting to ocean conditions, wave size, and each person’s physical level.
If you prefer a more personalized experience, a 1:2 ratio is available through our private lessons, which allows for more individual attention and more wave opportunities. We also provide water during the lesson.

It was great-best surf lesson ever! With the help of Marco Polo my instructor I caught the most waves in a single surf session and even caught a handful on my own. Marco was very knowledgeable and was teaching me what I would need to and even feel safe going by myself at this particular break (little fishes). I will definitely hire him again when I come back and would recommend his services to anyone interested in surfing for their first time to someone who is a seasoned surfer just looking for a local to show them the ropes!
And bonus was that he came to pick me up from my hotel and drop me back there afterwards.

Fun, and friendly staff. Alan was a great instructor. With zero experience, and minimal fitness (i'd recommend at least moderate fitness and balance) i was able to stand up successfully after a few waves.

It’s not the best location for beginners. Waves are way too big and not great for beginning surfers. Instructors were great, but it was very difficult to learn to surf w/ the huge waves.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and for your kind words about our instructors. We’d love to clarify a little about surfing conditions at Costa Azul. Wave size at any surf spot naturally varies due to tides, swells, and wind — it’s not always big or small. On average, our surf lessons take place in waves of about 2–4 feet, though there can be days with very small waves and others with larger ones.
Safety is always our top priority — if we ever feel conditions are unsafe, we cancel the tour. On the day of your visit, there was a tropical storm in the region, which can influence wave energy, but the wave size remained within a safe range for lessons. While some days can be more challenging for beginners, they can also be a great learning experience under close instructor guidance.
We hope to welcome you back on a calmer day to enjoy a different side of Costa Azul!

Took my 10-year-old daughter for her very first surf lesson and couldn’t be happier! The instructor was incredibly patient and attentive, making her feel comfortable right away. She caught so many waves and had an absolute blast. She’s already begging to come back tomorrow. Highly recommend for first-timers!

This was a surfing lesson for beginners.
Hugo was amazing. He picked us up on time and explained everything on the way to the beach.
He was prepared with chairs, an umbrella for shade, cold water, and snacks.
He was very patient with my 59 year old husband trying surfing for the first time.
It was a bucket-list item for him. He said it was the experience of a lifetime and thanks Hugofor making it happen.

This is not a beginner friendly maybe medium level. The waves were huge so as someone who never surf before it was not easy to do. The instructors were extremely ignorant to my lower skill set and rushed to get me in the water. After I expressed that I have never done it many times and that I do not feel confident doing it alone he went to teach the class and never came back for individual attention until I brought it back to another coworker. It’s only 3-5 instructors maybe to 15- “ beginner surfers “ there was no way they could give me enough attention to insure my safety as well as the other surfers

We’d like to clarify that during the surf lesson, you chose not to enter the water at all because you didn’t feel comfortable. Our tours are designed for small groups — always keeping a maximum ratio of 3 guests per guide — but they are still shared tours, so fully personalized 1-on-1 attention isn’t possible. For that level of support, we always recommend booking a private surf lesson.
Waves were not huge, they were arround 3 to 4 feet, friendly waves for all levels.
On the day of your tour, there were 9 guests and 3 instructors. Only 2 guests had surfed twice before; the rest, like you, were complete beginners. We teach beginners every single day, and our instructors have many years of experience. Part of our method is to go behind the board, pushing like a “motor” to help stabilize it so guests feel safer and can stand up more easily. Unfortunately, we couldn’t even show you this technique, as you decided not to go into the water.
We’d also like to mention that you requested to wear a life jacket, but wearing a life jacket while surfing is actually unsafe — because it creates space between the guest and the board, making it harder to control and easier to fall.

Instructor Alan was great , as first time surfer I was able to surf , had amazing time . Pick up and drop off was on time. Waves and place for surfing was very good .

This was my first time surfing and I had so much fun. I was a little nervous going in, but the entire experience was unforgettable. The waves, the energy, and the beautiful beach. Huge shoutout to our instructor Marco. He was super nice, patient, and incredibly helpful throughout the lesson. I can only imagine how hard it must be to teach total beginners like me, but he made it feel fun and approachable from the very beginning. Thanks to his guidance, I was actually able to catch a few waves. Would love to try again next time!
