- Please be advised that San Blas is in the Guna territory, which is an autonomous, Indian zone. The services are very basic. The Gunas will be providing all touristic services, such as meal preparations, car and boat transportations, lodging, and tour guiding. We are proud to be working with this friendly tribe and with each booking we give back to the community, supporting their customs and their traditional way of life. We kindly ask you to respect this beautiful culture and their simple way of life, leaving your expectations behind and learning about their innocent culture.
- Aside from using generators for electricity, there are no amenities and utilities as you are used to from the city. Food is basic, yet freshly prepared such as fresh fried fish, mixed seafood, chicken or lobster (at extra chrge) with salad, rice or plantains.

- PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR A 2.5 to 3 HOUR CAR JOURNEY EACH WAY OVER CURVY ROADS! THERE IS ALSO A 25-30 MINUTE BOAT RIDE TO YOUR FIRST ISLAND WHICH CAN GET QUITE BUMPY AND WET. We feel that the islands are worth the long drive, but some travelers have complained about the drive and the fast boat ride from and to the port. While we strive to provide our guests the best service and an unforgettable experience in San Blas, we are not responsible for road and ocean conditions, and we would like you to be aware of this fact :)
- ️ What to Expect in San Blas - Please read before Booking!!! Accommodation ❌ No A/C; limited electricity (available only 6:00 pm–6:00 am). ❌ No WiFi (local SIM may work, not guaranteed). Bathrooms are basic & shared; showers may have slight salt content. Water is precious; supply may be limited or inconsistent. ️ Beds and sheets may be worn or uncomfortable. ♻️ What looks like “clutter” is often reused items by Kuna families — please respect their way of life. ️ Food Meals freshly prepared in local kitchens. Simple dishes: fish or chicken, rice, salad, patacones. Additional food, drinks, and snacks can be purchased before departure. Transportation Car ride: 2.5–3 hrs from Panama City on curvy mountain roads; shared 4x4 SUVs (6 passengers). Extra seat = extra cost. Pick-up: 5:00–5:30 am — be ready on time (drivers cannot wait more than 10 minutes). ✅ Port check-in: Can feel busy or informal, but the Kuna community maintains an organized system and ensures all guests are cared for. Boat ride: 20–40 min; can be bumpy and wet. Boat transfers may stop at other islands to pick up or drop off guests, offering a glimpse of authentic Guna island life. Kuna Culture Only Kuna may work in San Blas. Most do not speak English; service is simple, not hotel-style. Respect, patience, and a smile go a long way. Nature & Environment Ocean currents bring plastic debris; Kuna clean regularly. Sandflies common during rainy/windless season (April–Dec) → bring insect repellent. Weather is unpredictable — rain possible anytime (no refunds for rain). Health & Safety Very limited medical care on the islands. Serious issues require evacuation to Panama City (guest covers cost).\ Final Note San Blas is not luxury — it’s about disconnecting, embracing a unique culture, and enjoying paradise. Come with patience, flexibility, and respect. The Kuna may be reserved, but they are kind and welcoming. With the right mindset, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories of one of the most stunning places on Earth.

The boat tour took is to some beautiful islands with amazing beaches, food and drink. Anybody the islands we went to accepted card payment and cash and had cellular service unlike many of the reviews seemed to indicate. We stayed in one island for the night in the overeater cottages. There was power from 6pm to 6am. My only suggestion would be to take a small travel fan as it can be very warm for sleeping. Our island host was Carlos who was amazing. He is friendly and accommodating.. the food was good with vegetarian options and the beer is only $2

Hi Gregory! Thank you so much for the incredible review and for sharing such helpful tips with the community. We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed the overwater cabins and that Carlos took such good care of you. He truly is a star in San Blas!
It’s great that you mentioned the connectivity and payment options; the islands are evolving, and it’s helpful for future guests to know they aren't totally 'off the grid' unless they want to be. Also, that travel fan suggestion is a pro-move for the tropical nights! We’ll be sure to pass your kind words along to Carlos and the rest of the island team. Safe travels!

Overall, the experience was great. The only issue we had was based on communication. The island itself was great communication with the handler of the website or realtor not so great. We were supposed to do island hopping. We ended up doing a community tour. We were supposed to visit the shipwreck and do snorkelling and we end up not that was very disappointing. As that was one of the highlights that we wanted to experience. The food was fine on the island we were at the staff was great. We had a good time created our own coconut bocce ball. Food was tasteful not bland. Water is fantastic. Cabins were fantastic. No bugs whatsoever overall top-notch.

Hi Gerry,
We’re glad you enjoyed the island, cabins, and the staff, and that you had fun with your coconut bocce ball! We’re sorry for the miscommunication regarding the activities—missing the snorkel and shipwreck stops is disappointing, and your feedback will help us improve clarity for future guests. Overall, it sounds like you still had a wonderful experience.

This trip totally exceeded our expectations (which were set very low by other reviews I had read and by the info we received from the travel agency warning us against all the horrible thongs we should expect (blood-sucking dand flies, dirty sheets, bumpy road, etc.-none of whoch tirnwd out to be true!
This is not luxury travel, but a very authentic travel experience in tropical paradise! The accommodation and shared bathroom facilities were simple, but much better than expected.
This that exceeded our expectations:
- the absolute beauty of these pristine islands
- delicious fresh seafood
- the overwater cabins on Guasirdup island were actually really nice!
- there was electricity, a power outlet to charge our phones, and a fan
- there is now a brand new sealed road, so no motion sickness or bumpy road!
-lovely staff on the island, especially Carlos
Things that could be improved:
- the logistics (we were first dropped at the wrong port and on the way back had to wait for other passengers)
-towels were not provided

The report was a little worn, however the hospitality made up for it ! We were all given the issues that could arise ! We were very happy with the experience OFF THE GRID !!!
RolandHans_M, Jan 2026
The most important thing first, ALL CLOSE ALL LIFE VESTS, ALL PASSENGERS, WERE BROKEN AND NOT CLOSED!!!!! The journey takes 45 minutes in rough seas and some passengers were non-swimmers.
The island was in very poor condition, the floor tiles in the Cabaña were splintered and lay on the ground in sharp-edged pieces. The staff weren't interested. Loungers, benches and hammocks were broken and the toilets were repeatedly blocked.

Response from Host, Mar 2024
