I am an avid private tour person who always asks to go to local places to eat and grocery stores for seasonings and souvenirs. our operator was very nice but he took us to places he clearly got a kickback from with the way the prices were inflated. I get the economy is supported tourism but good service and helping people save money on things will get you a better tip. I spent some of money I would have tipped him with at the places he took me that were overpriced so I gave him what was left. Luckily I know better and use grocery stores and ask for places locals eat and shop. Always ask for price in before you do something or you’ll overpay like we did for amazing local food. It was the best oxtails and jerk chicken straight off the grill. Loved the air conditioning in the van, enjoyed a beach with no people selling things that was a relief and worth the $3 fee for entry (that was included in the tour price). took us to see nice sights, very patient waiting for me to shop and refill on spices and shoes at Payless. Skip fern gully. It’s just a mix of ferns on the roadside.
