Great guide for a small tour. He had a good plan to start and made adjustments because of the weather. He was welcomed to each venue as a friend and we got exceptional service. He was full of interesting stories and information on the area.

One of my favorite tours during my entire stay in New Zealand. Merv was so knowledgeable and passionate about showing us around and explaining everything. We felt like we were spending the afternoon with “Uncle” Merv — like family. He showed us so much in the area — honey tastings, fresh figs at a fig farm, a family fruit stand with an assortment of fruit to buy and carry along to sample, mountain views, a cliff view, and a vineyard visit with a great light lunch, and a showcasing of the art deco district and the history behind it. Definitely worth the time and money! And we really did feel like it was a private family tour.

We had a substitute driver which is coloring my review. I have a feeling that if John, the owner, had been our tour guide it would have been better. The stops were good including a surprise stop at a road side stand where we were treated to local and delicious plums, apples and pears. The scenic outlook was beautiful. Wine tasting included 5 different wines as well as some cheese and crackers. The driver forgot about stopping for the fig tasting until we reminded him. We were glad we made that stop because rhe figs were delicious and we were able to sample (and buy) some of their products. The stop at the Honey Vendor was interesting and everyone bought some things to bring back. The driver tried to come up with things to show us to get us back just in time for boarding the cruise ship. We finally had to tell him that we were ready to go back to the ship.

Nice overview of Napier. Tasted wines, visited a honey tasting establishment and a tour to the top of the mountain and drove downtown to see the art decor
Kathleen_T, Mar 2026
We really enjoyed this tour to see bee hives where honey is made, taste several wines and eat cheese and figs at the winery and figgery. So yummy!

John did a stellar job. He is very knowledgeable, personable and quite the story teller. We saw beautiful sites, and enjoyed local wines and honey tastings.
The spectacular views and historical explanations rounded out a wonderful adventure.

Perfect introduction to Napier and the surrounding countryside. John provided a great overview of the local sites, history, agriculture, and superb visit to a local winery with multiple tastings and snacks. He was also very entertaining with his personal experiences and background, knowledgeable and well organized.

Our tour guide John was funny, knowledgeable and entertaining. The sights were amazing, beautiful mountains, rivers and farmland. The last stop, the winery, was excellent. We had lovely cheese and a tasting of several wines from this award winning winery in a lovely outdoor setting. John also drove us through Napier explaining its unique history and architecture. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and highly recommend it.

Great tour for cruise passengers with limited time around Napier. Beautiful views, lots of good info and yummy tastings of wine, cheeses, honey, chocolates and figs with time to purchase items. Slight delay in start of tour as John was looking for other cruisers due to port giving conflicting information but I applaud him for trying his hardest to find them. He DOES pick up on the pier RIGHT OFF THE BOAT even though NCL will tell you that you HAVE to take the shuttle buses out, he was there waiting for us. We were told the wrong info by NCL and actually boarded the shuttle buses then noticed as we drove off he was there so quickly jumped off, had we not noticed, we would’ve been in same situation as the lost passengers. Thank you for a great tour John!!

A very nice overview of the Hawke’s Bay area. John, our driver, did a fine job. We really enjoyed the winery stop, with lots of tasting and a generous plate of cheese and olives and such. The honey farm was quite interesting.

Nice itin but the weather was so bad, heavy rain all day during summer, thanks to John as our guide from Fantastic tour

We had a ball, John met us and we were early. The tour was relaxed and he adjusted the itinerary due to the earlier expected sailing. We saw fantastic scenery, sampled honey and figs. I’d use him again

We enjoyed Johns sense of humor and explanation on our tour. We ended with wine, cheese, olives, and new friends.

Had a fantastic day with John, if you do this activity get ready to laugh! We got some really great information and saw some beautiful sights throughout our day in a small group setting, highly recommend (make sure you have a sense of humor).
Cheryl_N, Feb 2025
It was fun, informative and personal. Only 6 of us with John going out of his way to ensure we had a good time.
The views, then the honey, winery and fig stop was a great experience. To be able to have time to wonder Napier Art Deco was also met my expectations

John, our tour director is a person who is both friendly and knowledgeable, and would be a wonderful tour guide for anyone wanting to explore this beautiful town of Wellington.
Kellyn_P, Feb 2025
What a fantastic way to experience some highlights in and around Napier! John was an excellent guide, friendly, and very knowledgeable, and fun to talk to. The itinerary was great and varied, loved each of the stops! Was also impressed with the wine tasting, not only good wine, but the size of the many samples was generous.
Stephen_W, Feb 2025
Very experienced and entertaining tour operator.
Very knowledgeable about all of Napier and surroundings.
What was not to like about this tour .
A nice ride to the top of a mountain with great views.
Wine . Honey . Cheese and a bit of chocolate what's not to like 😋

ESTHER_B, Feb 2025
We had a great guide in John. Gave us lots of history & we stopped at places other group might not have seen. Had wine tasting, honey tasting, rides up into the hills. Small van, long rides but good tour.
Andrew_R, Feb 2025
We had a fantastic time the guide really knew his stuff. He was very knowledgeable and a fantastic sense of humour
betsygorski, Feb 2025
When we arrived in port, time was limited more than we expected. John assessed our primary interest and modified his plan, john is descended from early settlers and able to share history and willing to share his perspectives which we really enjoyed.
Barbara_P, Feb 2025
John was engaging, funny and informative! Awesome tour!! We loved that John spoke over an intercom so we could clearly hear all he was telling us. The views were amazing! The honey tastings and wine, cheese and olive tasting was wonderful!!
Meryl_G, Jan 2025
While John gave an excellent narration of the area, disparaging the native population is NOT okay. Very disappointed to hear a racial rant.
Response from Host, Feb 2025
sorry you feel this way
we try to keep the tour as real as we can

Very comfortable van.John was very sweet and funny. We drove through town to see the Art Deco buildings. We were soon on our way out of town.We went to the top of Te Mato, with great views.
I would say this tour was more about the 2 agricultural sites we stopped at.
The Arataki Honey store was great. We got to taste about 10 different honeys, saw into several hives, looked for the queen in each.
Then we went to small winery, where John set out some cheese, crackers and olives. We tasted a lot of wines.
Very pleasant afternoon.

After a little hiccup, John provided a thoroughly knowledgeable and varied experience of Napier and its surrounds. The visit to a little village, orchard and vineyard to experience and taste their unique offerings was a treat.
