We love doing local food tours but had never done a cooking class before today. My husband loves baking/cooking and we thought it was be amazing to not only eat local, but learn how to make it ourselves as well. Yolanda and Orlando were our teachers and they were fantastic throughout. We ended up with a private class which was also pretty cool. The empanadas were incredibly delicious, especially with sugar cane water and The bread was a perfect way to wrap it up. We even had extra that will make great snacks/breakfast tomorrow. The farm itself is beautiful, with stunning views. I can’t wait to get home and try to make these ourselves now. Thank you so much for this unique experience and for opening your homes to us!!

A Delicious, Hands-On Experience with Stunning Views

We had an incredible time on this tour making bread and chicken empanadas. Our host was absolutely amazing—so welcoming, patient, and wonderful with guests of all ages. The experience was hands-on, fun, and the food was incredibly delicious. The property itself is stunning, with absolutely breathtaking views, and we were lucky enough to see monkeys and coatis during our visit. This was a truly memorable experience and something we would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

A Wonderful Family Experience, Not To Be Missed

    Terry_A, Dec 2025
A delightful introduction to Costa Rican cuisine, with our charming hostess Carolina teaching us to make bread, empanadas and pan dulce by hand.

Don’t miss this farm and cooking tour!

    julie_g, Dec 2025
Our family of six visited the farm for a bread making and empanada making class and we are so so happy that we did this. First, the view is unbeatable- so beautiful. The class was really fun, very easy and the food was delicious! Best of all though were the people. This tour is run by a family, they care very much about their farm and each other and it shows. This was a wonderful experience in Monteverde. They’ll arrange transport for you if needed.

A truly incredible (and delicious!) experience!

An absolutely magical place and experience! Got to learn how to make empanadas that were the best I’ve ever tasted and pan casero that were dangerously good! Carolina and Orlando’s love and passion for their family farm shows in everything they do and it’s impossible not to fall in love with this place. If you’re visiting Monteverde, don’t miss out on a really special experience.

    Wonderful morning baking!

    Ken_A, Aug 2025
Perfect morning making empanadas and typical Costa Rican bread with Carolina. Carolina taught us her grandmother’s recipes and we had fun mixing, kneading and eating the delicious products of our efforts! We will definitely be replicating the Empanadas for our family in California! Carolina is an amazing, wonderful host. She explained patiently and clearly each step of the process in great detail and excellent English. Carolina is young, entrepreneurial and enthusiastic but also completely genuine. It felt like we were baking with a friend. There were just the two of us this morning and most likely there will be fewer than 5 people learning together, so a truly personal experience. Also we booked the experience at 7 am for the same day at 10 am - so last minute decisions are fine! One last thing, the view from the reception area is majestic.

    Hidden gem of an excursion.

    Ron_R, Jun 2025
Everything was perfect for this visit. Orlando picked us up right on time at our hotel and was super friendly. The baking experience itself, led by his sister, Carolina (sp.) was fun, authentic, interactive, and ultimately really tasty. The excursion takes place on their family farm and the scenery from the covered cooking area is breathtaking. Once your bread is baked you eat together with a little drink (non-alcoholic) onsite. Definitely worth looking into if you are looking for something a little different in your trip to Monteverde. They are super nice people. Small gift shop with locally made products onsite as well. Highly recommend for families, families with kids, couples, friends, anyone!

Beautiful location and Carolina was friendly. Thanks for sharing your grandmother's recipes! The bread and empanadas were great.

    Amazing!! highly recommended

This was so fun. They were so nice and I learned so much. I recommend this to anyone. Plus we got to eat the fruits of our labors with the most beautiful view. Carolina was patient, & a great teacher.

    Cute experience!

This was SUCH a fun experience. We didn’t have this originally planned and something we decided on last minute and so so glad we did. Just a lovely wholesome experience with a sweet Costa Rican family. They made us feel at home. The empanadas were my personal favorite but the bread was also great. Fun experience if you have some extra time in Monteverde

Really nice time making empanadas and bread. Took pics of the recipes. Lot of fun for me and my wife.

Wonderful bread making and empanadas making class

    Ilah_P, Dec 2024
We had a wonderful time we made empanadas which were amazing and a sweet bread. Our host was so sweet and the location was beautiful and peaceful

    A wonderful time

    Marie_G, Nov 2024
An experience I will not forget. Our host was exceptional, she made us feel at home and I'm not good with my Spanish and I soon realized that I was saying words I shouldn't have which made us all laugh. A wonderful lady.

    Unique Costa Rican experience

    John_K, Jul 2024
The bread making experience takes place on a small family farm, Finca Paraíso. We were welcomed into the rustic kitchen and helped make empanadas and a sweet bread filled with homemade pineapple preserves. During this hands-on, immersive experience, we were taught how her grandmother taught her to make these recipes. As the empanadas and bread cook, we sat around the table enjoyed conversation along with a cup of tea or coffee. The best part was enjoying the food we prepared at the end. If you want to experience the local way of life, I highly recommend visiting.

    Family fun!

    Jennifer_P, Jul 2024
We had a wonderful time visiting the Finca El Paraiso! Making the bread and empanadas was so much fun as was getting to know the lovely hosts. Incredible view! We all, teens included, loved it.

    Fun and educational!

    Jessica_M, Jun 2024
We really enjoyed making empanadas and bread with Yolanda and Orlando, and learning about their small farm. The view added to the experience, as did the traditionally prepared coffee from a small nearby farm. They have some cute, handmade souvenirs available as well. So glad we did this!

    Not to Miss Experience!

    Kenneth_H, May 2024
Book this experience! We had spent a week in Monteverde and this really took a wonderful vacation to the next level. Connected us to the area in an heartfelt , meaningful way. Carolina was an excellent teacher. Loved every minute and would do it again!

Cooking from the heart on a beautiful farm

    Corina_C, May 2024
Wonderful experience in Finca Paraiso. I loved everything: the welcome, the stories, the lovely misses Yolanda who taught me to make bread and empanadas, the cooking process, the super friendly dog who greets everyone happily and the enjoyment at the end tasting the fruit of our labor

    Wonderful experience with delicious food

    Jrmie_R, Apr 2024
Wonderful experience with the young host who helped us bake bread and empanadas. The scenery was wonderful and the food delicious! It felt very personal and we had a great time.

Beautiful views, great bread, and wonderful host

    Eileen_T, Apr 2024
Carolina, the hostess, was super sweet and it was very authentic experience. We met at an open air kitchen space on her family's farm. We used fresh ingredients right from the farm - eggs, milk, and cheese. The bread and empanadas were excellent. It was very casual, relaxing and the views were wonderful. Carolina was an excellent host.

    Tasty and cultural experience

    Debbie_S, Mar 2024
Wonderful experience! Carolina is friendly and her instruction was excellent. My kids, ages 9 and 12, really enjoyed it as did the parents! While waiting for items to cook/bake, we got to peruse the cute items for sale and talk to her about her life in Monte Verde. The empanadas and the sweet bread treat (and delicious coffee/cane sugar beverage!) were delicious and served as a filling lunch.

    Baking in Monteverde

The overall baking experience was so cool! The young lady and her brother were very courteous and friendly. Not to mention the fantastic view from their back yard!

    Peaceful and filling

    Darlene_D, Mar 2024
The farm is a beautiful setting. Bread making (and eating was a treat). I was disappointed I did not receive the recipes we made to use at home. Especially the empanada!! I make them all the time and bought the flour to make at home ….

Wonderful Costa Rican home cooking lesson!

    Amie_D, Mar 2024
We had a lovely time making bread with Carolina. She is so warm and kind and her English is excellent. Her brother, who does the farm tours, was also welcoming, and we even got to meet the family dog! The open air kitchen has a beautiful view of the valley below and was such a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Carolina told us about the bread recipe, which was passed down by her grandmother. She went and harvested ingredients from their plot and they went right in! The eggs, milk, chives, etc were all from their farm—Talk about farm to table! We also made empanadas and were able to eat those while the bread was rising. Carolina was very prepared and had ingredients in accordance with our dietary needs. We got to talk to her about her schooling, family, and the cultural aspects of Costa Rica that you just don’t get when you’re doing a tour or on the typical tourist adventure circuit. My husband wasn’t sure about doing this but he ended up loving it and telling our kids at home what a great experience it was. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a “real” Costa Rican experience—off the beaten bath, non-touristy, just a chance to get to talk and get to know someone and enjoy personalized Costa Rican hospitality. You do need a car to get there; it’s about 15 minutes down the road from Santa Elena, the town center near Monteverde.

Much more than a cookery class

    Michael_H, Feb 2024
Relaxed and friendly cooking experience with majestic countryside views- this is a wonderful opportunity to spend time in the kitchen of a working cheese farm with a charming family. Get to stir the dough mixture with a spoon that's been handed down through family generations !

Gaining First Hand knowledge From a Costa Rican Family While Making Empanadas

    Sylvia_A, Jan 2024
This was truly one of the most memorable events of our trip. We had the opportunity to engage with a Costa Rican family while learning to bake empanadas. I enjoyed meeting Orlando and his mother Yolanda and his uncle who picked us up at our AirBNB. We learned about the history of the area they lived in and gained some insight as to what it must be like to live in Costa Rica on a farm. The family was very warm, welcoming and gracious.

    Great food and views

    Jenna_L, Aug 2023
Absolutely wonderful morning in Monteverde! The food was delicious and the farm is beautiful. It was nice to get away from town and learn about local food with a lovely family. Adding this activity to the farm activity also hosted by the same family would make a great day. :)

    Amazing experience

    marina_p, Jul 2023
Can’t recommend enough! We came as family with 2 kids and everyone enjoyed 100% of the experience. While we were waiting blessed with beautiful sunset view my kids were playing outside. we had delicious dinner with hand made empanadas and bread, also green tea is included. Host is kind and welcoming. We had amazing time and I recommend to all of you to try.

    Great cultural experience

    Antoinette_A, Jun 2023
We are a family of six and wanted a real cultural experience while here. This was perfect! Yolanda and Carolina were so welcoming, made the whole experience enjoyable for the kids and we got some very tasty, authentic food. The view was fantastic also. We finished just in time for one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. Highly recommend
