We had an amazing time...

Rodrigo_P, Jan 2026
We had an amazing time with this tour. Our guide Mohammed was very patient and knew the best spots to stop for a break and take in the scenery. We were grateful to have someone to navigate us around safely. The desert was beyond beautiful!

Amazing desert experience but too much driving

Sophia_G, Jan 2026
The highlight was the camel ride in the Merzouga desert, that was super cool! And we slept at nice comfortable places and ate very well along the way. However, there was a lot more driving than we had anticipated, and some of the other “sights” were a bit underwhelming. The stops along the way were generally very short, the longest stop we made was at Atlas Studios (which really doesn’t need an hour). We also didn’t do all the things in the itinerary we had seen beforehand, a couple of stops were just cancelled apparently, or exchanged for something else. I had the impression we would take a small hike in an oasis for instance but that didn’t happen. I understand that plans change for different reasons, but this was not communicated to us at all. The driver was a very friendly and sweet guy, but his English knowledge was very basic, and there were a lot of misunderstandings when we tried to ask him questions, so he was basically a chauffeur and not really a guide. All in all it was worth it because of the desert experience, and it was also cool to watch the landscape change so dramatically through the car windows. But be prepared for sitting in a car a lot, and if you can, I would recommend researching other and longer trips so that there is less driving per day and more time to stop and walk around in the different towns and beautiful mountains you pass by. Book a tour with a proper hike included, for example!

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you for your feedback. We’re happy you enjoyed the desert experience, accommodations, food, and our friendly driver. The oasis hike could not be done due to heavy rain a few days before the tour, which made the fields muddy and unsafe—especially as you were traveling with a small baby. For safety reasons, it was cancelled. Please also note that you traveled during peak winter season, when days are short, roads are busy, and driving time is unavoidable on desert tours. Despite being fully booked due to a system issue, we honored your reservation and did not cancel, and the price you paid was more than reasonable for a private tour. We appreciate your understanding and wish you all the best in your travels.

An experience way deeper than expected

Canmelsafaries is all about customer experience and you feel it from the first minute till the last. I actually booked a group tour but ended up being the only one on my dates due to covid and low season, and they still haven't cancelled my trip. My driver Khalid was very professional, spoke great English, was always looking to meet my needs, and luckily enough even is from a small village in the Atlas mountains. Because of this he is able to give you the point of view of a local so that you can get a real insight into the daily lives of people here. I have booked the tour to go to the Sahara, but the Sahara itself (however an experience of a lifetime with the starry sky, campfire and beautiful camp) ended up not even being my favorite part of the trip. It was the view to the Atlas mountains, the berber villages, and the new perspective I gained to my life in comparison to how people live here. Humbling experience and definitely intriguing to learn about modern day nomads and berber families who still follow old traditions. Really hard to encapsulate 4 days of beauty and experiences into a couple of characters but I definitely recommend taking this tour. It gives you so much more than you expect. The accomodations were more than fair, all of them had aspects i loved - either the view, the decoration or the food. If you come in the winter, be sure to bring slippers and long PJ-s though because it's gonna get cold. I recommend this tour to people who are short on time but want to experience the Sahara AND the Atlas mountains, because you get a taste of both. But if you want to have the "in the middle of nowhere" experience in the Sahara, it's better to book an alternative that lets you stay longer and go deeper into the desert, as the desert camps are not deep in the desert anymore, so with only one night you remain on the edge of it.
