Don’t Book This Spa In Marrakech!!!

We never even got to go on the Experience. Arranged to be picked up from our Hotel at 10am and the transport never turned up. We tried to phone the tour operator and no answer. Messaged the tour operatir and they said to get a taxi to a meeting point in Marrakesh which wasn’t what we’d organised. No help at all. Overall a complete shambles and I would give this zero stars if possible. Don’t book as plenty more Spa’s to choose from.

Not quite what we were hoping for

This was the 1st time we have experienced a Hammam so we didn't know what to expect. We were staying outside of the catchment area so a pickup was not expected and we were planning to get a taxi but the venue contacted us via Whatsapp the day before and offered to supply a private pickup for a small charge. As we didn’t really know where we were going we accepted this 1 way as we thought it would be easier – we had planned to walk up to the main square afterwards and do a spot of shopping – not realising how oily and sticky we would be all over and with it even in our hair, and there being no option to shower afterwards. Our booking was originally for 1pm so we were advised the pickup was set for 12:30. We then had a message the morning of the booking to tell us it had been moved to 12:40, but it didn't actually arrive until 12:56, by which time we were very worried we had been forgotten. There was no response from the venue via WhatsApp and no-one picked up the phone when we tried to contact the number on the booking. We were getting ready to request a refund when the pickup actually arrived. However the driver didn’t speak English very well and our Arabic is non-existent so he just shooed us towards the car. After 30 mins drive he stopped the car, asked for payment for the pickup and left us on the side of the road. We didn't know what to do or where to go. We wandered around for a few minutes and eventually saw a sign a short way up a side alley which said it was a Spa. We assumed this was where we were supposed to go and luckily it was. On arrival the interior is very dark, I’m not sure if this is supposed to be relaxing but we found it unnerving, especially as no one seemed to be around and when a man did appear he didn’t seem to speak very much English, there was very little instruction and we had no idea what we were supposed to do. We were asked to wait and left to sit in the dark for about 20 minutes. Buy this time it was well over 1 hour after the original booked appointment. Eventually we were asked into a side room and demonstrated by mime to removal everything (and I mean everything) and put our clothes into a basket. Our valuables were locked into a little wooden cupboard and we were given a key on a band to wear on a wrist. We were then taken into the bathing area and asked to lie down on the stone floor. We were soaped and scrubbed and shampoo’d again with mime and the use of the words “flip” or “up” when being asked to turn over or sit up. We felt a bit like pieces of meat or large fish being man-handled about. Once done we were wrapped in a robe and shown into a side room. Again through mime we were told to lie on the massage tables and a few moments later the massage started. There was no talking except the word “flip” used when we needed to turn over. The massage was very gentle and seemed to be more rubbing oils into the skin and hair rather than an actual massage. Afterwards we were left alone lying on the tables with no real direction of what was expected. After 10 minutes or so someone opened the door and said “finished now” so we got up, rubbed as much of the oil away as possible and got dressed. Stepping out of the door the same man we initially saw said “Tea” and pointed to another side room. We recovered our things from the locker, went into the side room found 2 glasses a pot of sugar and a teapot on a tray and squeezed 1 small cup of tea each out of the teapot. A woman then appeared and handed us a large wooden decorated box and the word “Tip” very clearly said to us and disappeared. We left a tip as requested and as no one was around left the venue. It was all a bit odd and not quite what we had hoped for. We have had massages in many places so that bit was a little more familiar, but we would have liked to be able to discuss any problem areas which might need more attention (lower back, shoulders or neck for example) and whether or not scented essential oils could be used and which ones. Had we known what to expect we might have enjoyed it more, but unfortunately not so much this time around. From what we saw the photos advertising this experience are stock pictures and as such not representative of the venue we visited. Whilst no one was in anyway aggressive or pushy (expect with the Tip box perhaps) it didn’t really tick the Spa and Pamper button we were hoping for. We are aware the Tour Company organise these visits to a couple of different Hammam locations in the city, so perhaps it was just an unlucky experience this time.
