From start to finish this experience was AMAZING!
We opted for the private option in the tea house, a more intimate experience…we were not disappointed! The ambience and attentive nature of all staff members was great.
Our guide and translator was knowledgeable, professional and personable. Providing a 5 star service with interesting insights into the Gion and surrounding Geiko district.
Our Maiko and Geiko were warm and friendly and extremely attentive. Both demonstrated true talent when they preformed. They answered our questions and gave us a great picture of their lifestyle and journey to becoming Geiko and Maiko.
The kaiseki meal was delicious…..Compliments to the chef!
Overall, I would highly recommend this experience for anyone who wants a truly intimate and personal insight into the Geiko and Maiko traditions!

I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Kyoto area; it was a truly unforgettable experience.
Our guide was exceptionally informative, providing deep insights into the daily life and traditions of a Maiko. During our dinner, the guide walked us through the intricate details of the Maiko’s attire, explaining the significance of her specific dress and accessories. The dance was amazing.
Gaining that level of context while sharing a meal made the evening feel both educational and incredibly special. It is a rare, look into a beautiful part of Japanese culture that I will always treasure.

The guide, Mia, was absolutely delightful: fun, knowledgeable, and with a true passion for the geisha (geiko) world. And the visit to the neighbourhood was interesting and informative. Unfortunately, the experience with the geiko itself was rather disappointing: she did little besides sitting there, answering very briefly to our questions, refill our glasses. No conversation, no initiative, no sign of the famous “art of entertaining” they should be so skilled at. The evening closed with a brief traditional dance and a game. All in all not worth the money.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback.
We are truly pleased to hear your kind words about Mia. She consistently strives to create a warm and engaging atmosphere for our guests, and we greatly appreciate your recognition of her passion and knowledge.
At the same time, we are sincerely sorry that the ozashiki portion of the evening did not meet your expectations.
In the world of geiko and maiko, personalities and styles of hospitality can vary. Some performers are naturally more reserved and soft-spoken, reflecting a traditional aesthetic of modesty and subtlety that has long been part of Kyoto’s culture. However, we fully understand that for guests traveling from abroad, especially for a premium private experience, there is often an expectation of a more visibly interactive and dynamic form of entertainment.
Your feedback helps us reflect on how we can better bridge this cultural difference. While authenticity remains central to what we offer, it is also our responsibility as organizers and guides to help facilitate deeper engagement and ensure that guests feel genuinely entertained and included throughout the evening.
Please know that we take your comments seriously. We will continue working closely with our partners to maintain both the integrity of this centuries-old tradition and the level of experience our guests rightfully expect.
Thank you again for sharing your experience. We truly value your perspective.
Kind regards,

Amazing experience! The guide was so informative and the experience was so enriching! We had the best time

Great to have dinner and chat with Maiko San, see her elegant performance and guide was excellent. We started with a walk around the Geisha district, arriving at the tea house venue. A traditional room where the team served up traditional food and saki. We had a good chat with Maiko San and then she performed a beautiful dance to traditional music. Then party games which she excelled at. A great evening with a truly authentic experience.

If you have any doubt, just do it, this is so worth it, I don’t even have words to describe it. Definitely the highlight of our trip, and I wish I could repeat it many times.

After a warm welcome we had al walk trough Gion explaining the cultural background. Our guide Miyah was the best. She made it fun even for the teenagers present in our family. No question was to much. After a visit to the tea house. Warm welcome as a family and Miyah for perfect translation.

MIA was an adorable host. A wealth of very interesting information, handled our groups requests well, and kept us great company. The Maiko-san was also super cute and interesting. The food, however was barely edible and it was 2 hours too long. Sorry to say that!!! But - true:)

For Private Dinner with a Geisha, we select some of the finest Japanese restaurants in Kyoto with award winning prestigious chefs. They serve a Kaiseki-style cuisine, which is a full-course traditional signature cuisine in Kyoto. It is an extremely delicious cuisine mainly with the use of fish and vegetables. However, sorry to hear that such the cuisine didn’t suite your palate.
In future, we would like to welcome guests who will be able to understand the true value of Japanese traditions. Thank you.

This is a pricey tour, and we hoped for a good outcome. We got more than we could have imagined. Our guide, Mia, could not have been kinder or more well versed in Geisha culture. We felt like long lost friends, immediately. Her walk around the Geisha area of Kyoto was fascinating and so insightful in preparing us to meet our Geisha for our private dinner. The restaurant was in a quiet alley and had a private room awaiting us. The many course meal was served over two hours and was a very traditional Japanese Kaiseki dinner, far from the Western version of Japanese cuisine. One must be adventuresome when booking this tour when it comes to food. The Geisha was in training, a “Maiko,” as there are many steps to being a a full- fledged and recognized Geisha, but she could not have been sweeter or more representative of the art of her pursuit. If at first we felt awkward, we became a wonderful little group around the table with Mia as translator. Many smiles and some good chuckling. Our Maiko performed two beautiful dances in our private room. We asked many questions and shared stories of our lives and pets. Thanks to Mia as a teacher and translator and historian, the evening was something we will always cherish. We learned and laughed so much, and we saw the inherent grace of Geisha culture.

Our guild, Mia was truly fantastic. Her knowledge of the area and history, particularly Geisha (Gaiko) was outstanding. highly recommend the experience.

This is the “real deal” experience with a Geiko San (Geisha) and/or Maiko San (Apprentice Geisha). We learned so much from our Guide Mia prior to and during our dinner at the Tea House. This experience is everything we expected and more. The food was outstanding as well.

I'll start by saying I have done both options for this tour - the less expensive group tour with a bunch of strangers 2 years ago, and this time I splurged and chose the private dinner option for my whole family. I initially thought that the private dinner would be similar to the group tour experience, but it was SO DIFFERENT. The group tour was wonderful but it was more like visiting a museum - you start off with a walking tour and then you visit a tea house where a maiko performs a couple songs and dances for you, and then you can ask her a few questions as a group. The private tea dinner option is probably closer to what Japanese businessmen would experience as a party - the geiko and maiko actually sit right next to you during the meal and pour sake! They are very good at their job because my cup was never empty the entire night 😆. We also had 2 additional dedicated wait staff who constantly brought out food. The level of food and drink you get is 5x better in the private dinner vs group tour. By the end I was so full I could barely finish the dessert!
The geiko and maiko were, without a doubt, the highlights of our night! They were like fairies from a fairy tale. From the moment we entered the private tea house, which was stunningly beautiful and spotlessly clean, I felt an air of elegance that set the tone for the evening. Their traditional Japanese song and dance were performed to perfection, showcasing their incredible skill and dedication. I found myself completely mesmerized by their poise and grace as they moved through each performance. Their manners were so graceful and poised - even when they were sitting next to us during the meal.
Even though we enjoyed a delicious Kyoto kaiseki dinner, it was hard to focus on the meal because we were so captivated by the performances and conversation. The food was beautifully presented and full of delicate flavors, but the artistry of the geiko and maiko truly stole the show. Our amazing interpreter, Mie, helped bridge the cultural gap, allowing us to ask questions and learn about their lives and traditions. I thought that it was going to be a simple Q&A, but it truly felt like a conversation with both of them, with the help of our interpreter.
Splurging on the private tea house experience was absolutely worth it. My parents and I agreed that this was one of the most unforgettable experiences we’ve ever had—something so rare and special that few people get to witness. I’ll treasure this memory forever!!

An unforgettable experience! We’ve learned so much about geiko and maiko world and in general around the japanese culture. Worth every penny!!

This was an amazing experience. The Geisha’s were beautiful and elegant. Their performance during our dinner was an amazing experience. Highly recommend to anybody!

This was an exceptional booking. Mia greeted us early and took us on a walking tour through the district. She was super knowledgeable, friendly, and hilarious. Her English was superb.
Our dinner with the Maiko was fantastic. She did a great job answering all of our questions and showing us her traditional dress. We played a simple drinking game, had a couple of dances, and got to take lots of pictures.
Our group would highly recommend this tour. We had a great evening!
Tim_P, Aug 2024
This was a really incredible experience! Our guide herself has been trained as a Geiko San (she had not finished her training) and was therefore able to give us a really deep insight into a Geisha's (Geiko San) life. The Maiko San was very young and it was very interesting to learn about her intentions to become a Geiko San (Geisha). The traditional entertainment was a great experience and the Kaiseki Dinner was absolutely delicious. Strongly recommended for those who have a deeper interest in japanese culture.
Sarah_C, Jul 2024
Everything about this evening was perfect. Our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The Maiko-San who entertained us was talented, beautiful, and engaging. She performed traditional Japanese dance, played games, and sang songs for us. The guide gave us a great background on the history and culture of geisha and maiko. I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone traveling in Kyoto.

We went with family members and this was some of their feedback:
- "Dinner yesterday was a once in a lifetime experience to get to enjoy time with a living model of Japanese tradition. Truly an unforgettable experience."
- "It was very enjoyable, it was very interesting to get to know about their life’s and what it takes to become one, as well as experiencing their dances and fun practices to entertain the customers. It was a memorable experience."
- "The geiko dinner was amazing, we had such a blast! In the picture she is playing a drinking game with us! And our guide was wonderful, really informative and super funny. 🙏❤️✨"
Overall, we definitely enjoyed ourselves and would highly recommend this!

My husband, my 22 yr. old twins (son & daughter) and 19 yr. old daughter spent the most memorable evening with our guide, Mia, learning about the history of the Gion district. Soon after, we met a studied maiko, named Hukuyu. She was exquisite and could not have been more lovely. We learned about her day to day life, her studies and her pop culture interests. We asked how she dresses in her kimono and how she sleeps at night keeping her hair in place. She performed two of the twenty dances she has learned and taught us to play a game while always keeping our glasses full. We felt honored and humbled meeting her.

Mia, our guide, was wonderful! She was passionate about Geiko-sohne and Meiko-sohne culture, highly communicative and had a friendly touch.
The evening was lovely and it will be an experience my wife and I will never forget!
Thank you very much,
Patrick

A very informative and fun experience. Mia, our guide, was very engaging and knowledgeable. Our Maiko was very pleasant and eager to share her journey to Geiko. Her performance was great as well. The restaurant
handled our complex food preferences very well

Every part was and adventure and absolutely wonderful. From the short tour of Gion to entering the private Teahouse and escorted to the room where I met the Maiko and Gaikō. They were elegant, gracious and beautiful. We chatted while my meal was served, their lives were incredibly interesting. Then the entertainment - dancing and shamisen and then the games. All in all an incredible private evening and a glimpse into what happens in a private setting with a true Maiko and Gaikō. After I returned to my hotel I wished I has asked more questions but was so nervous at the time I did not. I would do it again in a second.

Getting to chat one on one with a Meiko was a once in a lifetime experience. We will never forget it and our guide/interpreter was incredible.

I had an amazing time with the Maiko-san who came to the restaurant. She talked, played with me and danced for me. For me it was a dream becoming true and I loved every moment.
My guide for the evening, Ms. Mie was very nice, knowledgeable and spoke perfect English. Se showed me around in the Gion area and explained a lot of the traditions related to the Maiko/Geiko world, so that I would be prepared for the meeting with my host.
The dinner was also very tasty, super traditional and with lots of delicious food.
Thank you so much for having me.

Our guide was spectacular. Place was clean and food excellent. We learned a lot about modern day’s geisha

This is a review of the 1/2 Kaiseki Dinner with a Geisha/Maiko: The tour starts with a walking tour outside around the Geisha Quarter in Kyoto's Gion District for about 45 min. You learn about Geisha/Maiko and the realities and myths of the profession, which is very fascinating. Then you go into a nice restaurant in a private room for the group where a Geisha/Maiko joins. Food is served and a question/answer discussion is had between the guests and Maiko with our guide translating. The Maiko does a little performance with music, plays a few games with the guests, then has to leave for presumably her evening's main appointment. The food is very good and the 1/2 kaiseki dinner was actually plenty of food.
Our guide was excellent and professional, so 5 stars. The experience with the Maiko was great although she did not have have much room to move to do her performance in the corner of the room and the performance was very brief, so 3.5 stars for that part. Dinner 4 stars. Organization and communication was 1 star however. First, I tried to communicate with them several times after booking and never got a response. I provided dietary restrictions for the group (only thing organizers asked for) some didn't eat seafood/shellfish, but the dinner did not accommodate those restrictions. Last, we had 11 people in our group and I only booked 9 because of a 10 person max per booking, so 2 friends didn't join. The tour had 13 people total however, so the tour size is larger than the max number you can book, which doesn't make sense and was one of the reasons I was trying to get them to respond to me (through Viator was the only way). Overall a very nice experience, but it needs improvements to make it a great experience.
Phoebe_M, Nov 2023
Meeting an actual maiko was an incredible experience. A very rare privilege. Her dances were beautiful and she entertained us with some games. As she was the primary reason for the booking, I believe it's still a five star experience.
However, there were some things that I wanted to mention that we didn't enjoy. If you are a picky eater, vegan, or have some other sort of diet, the dinner part of the experience will likely not be very good for you. You can't modify the food so you will be served VERY traditional Japanese food. Some of which includes meats and other dishes that may be very different from what you normally eat. If you're adventurous and have no diet restrictions, this is a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed eating different things and love experiencing new flavors . It would be helpful if there was a menu talking about the different foods and ingredients used in the dishes because we had to ask the tour guide what everything was.
I wish there was a way to modify the dinner or at least give us the option to to opt out of it and lower the ticket cost. My partner unfortunately didn't enjoy the food and got sick afterwards. I think his stomach may just not be used to raw fish. We also felt like we may have been ignored intentionally or unintentionally by the waitress as we had to ask for water multiple times. But there was also a lot of other guests there so they may have been overwhelmed by the amount of people to serve. It was a large and boisterous group.
Due to the size of the group, we could barely hear the tour guide when walking around the city.
Manny_S, Nov 2023
I tried contacting the tour guide no response as one of the guest was vegetarian. I messaged Viator multiple times so they can get in contact and I would get the response of We will keep you posted via email as soon as we heard back from them. When we arrived for experience I let the tour guide no and told me it’s already a fixed menu. I contacted Viator for some type of refund and nothing has been done .
Michael_C, Nov 2023
Mei our guide was first class. Her knowledge incredible but mostly her love of the Maiko’s and Geiko’s. Our Maiko who joined us for dinner was so engaging and sweet. And her dancing so special. One of the most special evenings we’ve ever had traveling the world.
David_S, Oct 2023
Super fun family experience..: started with a walking tour of the Geisha part of the city with a guide who spoke great English. She was super excited to share with us her knowledge of the Geisha culture.. the tea house setting was very fascinating with a Meiko and Geisha dinner where they answered lots of questions and performed. Also accompanied by a traditional Japanese dinner that was very elaborate… come hungry.
