We hiked Dragon's Back on the east coast of Hong Kong Island with our guide Rory. It was medium challenging, but the views from the top were totally worth it. And because it was early February, it wasn't too hot. We ended at Big Wave Bay beach and enjoyed a well-deserved local beer called Dragon's Back, naturally. Rory was an excellent guide and was full of information about Hong Kong and its geography. We would definitely seek to do another hike with him.

Rory was our guide and he talked the whole time. We learned so much about the hike and about Hong Kong from him. He was the best.

For a beginner hike, the distance is perfect-not to long and no to short. And the scenery is breathtaking. There are many streams and jungles. We can walk in the hill and also sit on the beach.
Response from Host, Aug 2025
Thank you so much for joining us and an amazing time together! Safe travels :)

This was an overall excellent experience but one must be mindful of the following:
Be cautious of excessive heat.
Know that when hiking, most of the ground is not flat and there are many rocks to go through so be careful and take your time.
Bring plenty of fluids, water and drinks that replenish electrolytes are highly suggested.
In my opinion, the best time for this hike is fall or spring when the weather is easier.
Tristan, our guide was extremely patient and took the time to ensure my safety. The views are astounding and this is a great activity to escape the bustling existence of Hong Kong.
Overall, this activity is recommended but take into consideration this review so you are best prepared as possible.

Thanks Tom. Indeed any hike is more challenging in the hotter months in HK and it’s important to bring a lot of water! Glad you had a super day with Tristan :)

Hong Kong is huge. It’s crowded. It’s easy to get caught up in the lights, the shopping, and the amazing restaurants. But if you’re looking to see the city from a different angle and get some exercise, this tour is an absolute must. The guide (Rory) was very communicative. We met at the starting point and took a mini bus to the trailhead. The hike itself was a perfect mid level of difficulty with enough climb to break a serious sweat, but not so much that the average person couldn’t participate. Rory knew all the spots for great photos and perhaps the highlight for me was cooling off with a swim in the South China Sea. 10/10 experience. Thank you, Rory.

Thanks ever so much for the kind words Erik, was such a pleasure to meet you! I’m so glad you enjoyed our experience and we hope to see you again soon :)

Although advertised as "beginner level" this is 10k but it was a great walk. Steep to get on the hill and then rolling up and downs with wonderful views over the coast. Then descent onto a beautiful sandy beach. Tristan is a great guide, knows plenty about the area and HK and its history, he clearly loves HK and this comes over in his conversation. I thoroughly recommend this trip (though maybe not in high summer!)
Response from Host, Feb 2025
Thanks very much for joining us! Indeed easy on the Dragons Back in winter but as it gets warm and humid becomes increasingly challenging. Great day out!

This was a very nice hike. It would be good for a beginner hiker. Definitely go with the guiding company “Wild Hong Kong”. Rory was my Guide. He is very friendly and nice and the logistics were very well organized and the communication was very good. It was a stress free Event. Rory grew up in Hong Kong, so can provide lots of knowledge and interesting facts. If I ever come back to Hong Kong I will definitely book tour with his company again.

Thanks Teresa, it was such a joy to share the experiences with you! Hope to adventure with you again one day :)

Check out the weather before hand and have appropriate clothing and have some water with you. The stairs may be a bit steep for some, wear appropriate shoes.
Response from Host, Dec 2024
Thanks ever so much for joining us on the tour :)

Amazing tour with a super nice and knowledgeable guide Tristan. Beautiful views and a delightful swim at the end. We are three ladies in our late 40s with no much exercise experience from before and it was a great moderate pace hike. We were by the sea in about 3 hours. We were lucky with the weather, a bit windy and cloudy so we did great with only one bottle of water each. In hot days you have to carry more.
Thank you a lot!

This was a very nice hike with Jessie. Our party of 3 really enjoyed the views and outdoors. It’s a moderate hike with great vistas. It’s wonderful to see the surprisingly amazing terrain outside the city. We would do it again!

An original and great way of discovering all the beautiful attractions of Hong Kong, with Rory, a knowledgeable guide.

Alex was my guide. He was very professional, provided lots of info on Hong Kong and the various sights along the trail.
The hike itself was uphill the first half, then down hill the other half bring water.
Will book again next time in Hong Kong. This was one of my favorite things I did in HK.
Keep up the hiking tours!!! Thx Alex and Rory.

Was a enjoyable hike along the dragons back. Guide was very knowledgeable about the area and history of the island.
Wendy O, Jan 2018
Our guide, Henry, went above and beyond what the tour description was by showing us around the back streets of the village we arrived at after the hike was over. The tour itself was informative and scenic and not a high level of fitness was required. The meeting point was easy to find using Hong Kong's fabulous metro system. Overall a day to be remembered!

Fabulous tour visiting the Hong Kong from the top of dragon back mountain. Definitely not for the someone who has any mobility issues! We are all active runners and found it a good, challenging hike. Our guide was very knowledgable and fun to spend a half day with!

This was my second hike in HK but not my favorite. Dragon's Back itself is lovely but an easy hike - mostly a walk with a few inclines here and there. If you are in decent shape this will not be challenging. Also - whatever you do - DO NOT GO ON THE WEEKEND! It was so crowded that at multiple points in the hike we were literally walking in a long line with other people. Loud talking all around. Passing people on the trail. If I had gone on a weekday I would have enjoyed this much more. There are some amazing views and photo ops. We were lucky to see some para gliders take off and land which was pretty cool! There are some amazing hiking areas in Hong Kong and I highly recommend checking them out. The other hike I did was in Kai Sung - it was a long, challenging one but wow it was wow it was the best thing I did in Hong Kong!

The tour changed the time of departure the night before to half a hour earlier but I was out that night and did not see the text until that morning. When I got to the starting point at the bus station, they had already left. I called the tour company and they said the group will wait for me at the beginning of the hike trail until I got there. They instructed me on what bus to take. When I met the tour leader, he said he had tried to call me last night but I did not receive any voicemails and I had called the day before for tour confirmation by leaving a message. Despite this mishap, I had a great hike. I would have given it five stars if they had handled the time change better.

Rory is an extremely experienced guide and he knows the geographical location of each and every turn at the back of his hand. The hike is perfect for beginners and the view is simply breath-taking. If you have about 4 to 5 hours to spare to see Hong Kong in a different light, this is excellent.

The Dragons Back Hike was a highlight of our holiday in Hong Kong. I would particularly like to mention Theo who took us on the hike, my husband and I felt we were on a hike with a friend, can thoroughly recommend.
The views were amazing and to finish off on the beach with pizza and beer was fab!
Anna S, Nov 2016
We had a great hiking tour! It was raining in the morning so our guide suggested a later start. This was perfect since the afternoon was sunny and beautiful. The hike was not difficult and the views magic. We ended at a beach were we could swim and have a cold bear. Fantastic!
Matija N, Jul 2016
Nice hike, great guide, amazing views and awsome local craft beer at the beach :-)
Kathie L, Jun 2016
The views from the ridge are fantastic. Our guide, John, was knowledgeable and friendly. We made the trip on one of the hottest days so the first half was a little difficult. The beach at the end is a nice finish.
jayne_h, Apr 2016
Most enjoyable, the weather was fantastic with views to match over the Dragon's Back. Great hiking with an excellent guide. We would certainly choose another hike when next in Hong Kong.
Soh Teen Tina T, Sep 2015
There were only the 2 of us and our guide. Rory was patient and showed a genuine enjoyment in hosting the hike and sharing with us the beauty of the trail and nature.
The hike is not for the faint-hearted or people who are not too fit. There were many steps up to the Dragon's Back ridge. Also, being a hiking trail, there were many rocks and tree roots to overcome along the way. But the views from the ridge are worth it.
