This was a great way to start our Hanoi stay. Our guide walked us through parts of the old quarter and then onto train street just as a train was about to arrive. We stopped to try different foods after that finishing with dessert. All was delicious.

This was a great tour. Our tour guide was Thomson who is a foodie who knew all the ins and outs of great local food in HaNoi. He met us at the hotel and we tried food at 4 different places. The food we ate was wonderful, but Thomson also gave us a great tour about the history of the area and a better understanding of local customs.

Fantastic food tour with lots of Hanoi facts and information about the families making the food. I think we got 6 different dishes.

Quite rushed however a good experience overall. No need to wait for food as all taken care of. No experience with locals.

Good to meet other tourist and eat with them. It was quite hectic during TET. Overall satisfied and the guide was trying his best.

Special Tet version - Guide made thoughtful adjustments!

Anty_F, Feb 2026
Normally a group tour, we got lucky and were treated to a private experience. We went during Tet so understandably quite a handful food spots were not open. Our guide still tried his best to curate a foodie experience for us - we had 4-5 different kinds of food and were quite stuffed and had to turn down his offer of more food. He pivoted the focus to showing us more Hanoi old quarter history / everyday life spots. The tour is therefore more 50% food 50% walking / knowing the local life and history tour - which suits us well! Would love to come back again eventually to do a more foodie-centric tour!

My first time in Vietnam...

My first time in Vietnam - it was a joyful first impression of Hanoi. The city is beautiful at night.

My guide Thomson was...

Maggie_P, Jan 2026
My guide Thomson was excellent in every way and he gave me the adventure of a lifetime. I shall never forget it. I was the only one doing the tour today (my good fortune) so agreed to do the tour on the back of his motorbike! Normally it would have been a walking tour with others in the group. We explored the alley ways of the old city quarter, first stopping at Train street for tea/coffee. That experience itself was mind blowing exciting. To sit 6 inches away beside the tracks of a passing train as it whistled past; the adrenaline rush was indescribable. Next we stopped at two alleyway spots for delicious street food, sitting alongside local Vietnamese folk. I chose to leave out the third stop for Pho (wouldn’t have had room) and had dessert instead, yummy fried banana and coconut donut. This turned out to be an independent private tour with just me, so we were able to cover a lot more area around Hanoi driving past all the major landmarks, the French Quarter, lake, etc. The circumstances surrounding my experience today may not be replicated entirely because it was outside of the norm, but I would recommend Thomson as a guide. He is courteous, obliging, friendly and knowledgeable about Vietnam history and its people.

Awesome guide! We learned a lot about him and his culture. Expensive food tour for what you get though.

Great way to eat your way around Hanoi

Lynne_K, Oct 2025
This tour was a lot of fun, it was small group of 5. We met our guide near our hotel., he gave us details on what we were doing for day. First stop was Train Street, it was a lot of fun to see. We had seats right next to track. We then went on walking tour and got to experience some of the food Vietnam has to offer. Thompson, our guide was very good. He made sure we were safe on the busy streets of Hanoi, shared local knowledge with us, and made the day a lot of fun even in the rain .

Foodie Guide was awesome

Annie_D, Oct 2025
Great options, delicious food and awesome foodie guide! Thompson was great and shared so much additional knowledge about Hanoi and was able to make amazing suggestions for the rest of my exploration! Highly recommend.

Tour was approx. 3.5 hours long with 5 stops for food and drink ending up at train street which was a great experience. Guide was friendly and knowledgeable!

Our guide was an hour late!

Ginny_L, Jun 2025
I read very good review of this tour. However our guide was almost an hour late, he took us for a few stops for food and one of them was closed! Then he googled where we should go next. He did not plan well for this tour! This is almost like a free flow tour! Prior to this tour, I reached out to the operating company and asked specific questions, I did not hear any reply. In our past Viator food tours, the guide whatapp us the day before to confirm everything. I had great food tour experience and this one is disappointed. Due to his late arrival, we only covered 5 food stops, the booking description mentioned to try 6 to 8 different food. The reason I gave 3 stars instead of one or two because the guide put us in a taxi on his expenses to ensure we did not miss train track highlight. At least he took the responsibility for his fault! My conclusion of this tour - our guide was very unprofessional!

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Dear Ginny, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're truly sorry that your experience with our Hanoi Old Quarter Food and Train Street Walking Tour did not meet your expectations. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the late start and the lack of communication prior to the tour — this is not the standard we aim to uphold. We take full responsibility for the delay and the poor planning you encountered. While we’re glad our guide made the effort to ensure you reached the train street highlight, we understand that this doesn’t make up for the overall disorganized experience, the missing food stops, or the lack of confirmation ahead of time. We also acknowledge the frustration of visiting a food stop that was closed — we are working to update our route and confirm venue availability more rigorously moving forward. Your comments have been shared with our operations and guiding team, and we are implementing stricter internal procedures to ensure punctuality, clearer communication (including pre-tour confirmations), and a more curated food experience for all guests. We appreciate your fairness in acknowledging the guide’s attempt to make things right despite the issues, and we’re very sorry that your expectations — and our promises — weren’t fully delivered. If you’re ever back in Hanoi, we’d love the opportunity to offer you a better experience and regain your trust. Warm regards, Rose

Awesome Experience

Jim_L, Jun 2025
Did this walking food tour some three weeks ago and it will always be memorable. Our guide , Ton , was amazing - the places he took us to we would never have found. The food was totally authentic and very enjoyable - To even gave us choices which was handy as my wife does not eat seafood. Our walking tour ended in Train Street where we had absolute front row seats . Ton then organised a Grab to get us back to our hotel. A truly memorable evening.

Excellent Tour

Aaron_S, Jun 2025
This tour was absolutely fantastic. We visited many local spots that I never would have discovered on my own. The guide was very knowledgeable, providing detailed explanations not just about the food, but also about the city's history and culture. I highly recommend this tour as an excellent introduction to both Hanoi and Vietnam.

Excellent Tour! Must do!

Brandy_S, Apr 2025
Wonderful experience tasting foods from restaurants we couldn’t find or feel comfortable dining by ourselves. Einstein , our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and took us to some awesome places. So much delicious food and the train experience was unbelievable! Wear comfortable shoes! Definitely recommend this experience!

heather_e, Apr 2025
We stopped first for coffee/beer at the train street which was really neat because we went to a café that was part of somebody's home. Then we went to three different restaurants. Our guide was wonderful because he tailored the food to things we would actually eat. For example, he was going to take us somewhere with eel but two people in our party do not eat eel so he took us somewhere else. He told us a lot about the city and Vietnam culture. We ended at a dessert restaurant and sampled three different types of traditional Vietnamese dessert. Highly recommend as an introduction to the city and Vietnamese food.

Great experience to eat authentically in places you would likely walk past! Tom was a great guide and host

Food walking tour

Gillian_M, Apr 2025
We had a good tour of the city. This really helped orient us for our trip. Tom was very knowledgeable and gave us a good history lesson. The food was enjoyable and we tried dishes we would not have had the courage to try. Finishing up at train street was quite an experience

Great food (and drinks choice) and value for money

Eric_M, Mar 2025
It is just what is claims to be … a walk around the town, stopping off and trying all sorts of local dishes as we go. Mr T(h?)on was a superb host, a lovely gentleman who seems to get much pleasure from bringing us around. If you come to Vietnam and are unsure what all the food is, don’t miss out, ask for Mr Thon !

Wonderful experience!

Victoria_F, Mar 2025
My husband and I booked this tour last minute and it was amazing! It ended up being just us on the tour with our guide, Tom. He was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable and took us all around the Old Quarter sharing stories and history. The food was unreal and we left so full and happy! We ended our tour on the famous Hanoi Train street and Tom secured us a great viewing spot for the train, it’s a must do!! It was the best food tour we’ve ever been on! We highly recommended it!

Great journey through food

Amy_P, Feb 2025
I always love a food tour and at the end of my trip through Vietnam I wasn't sure that I would be discovering new food and flavours but Tom really looked after us and showed us new foods here in Hanoi. Very good tour and worth the money. We did do alot of walking.

Fabulous evening, not to be missed

Kate_H, Feb 2025
A friendly evening! We stopped off at 4 different restaurants / food stalls to try at least two specialities of the local Hanoian food scene at each. Mr Anh was our guide and picked out two dishes I really wanted to try and also checked that the other foodie tourists hadn’t tried the other dishes too, as we all wanted to try new to us, local specialities. Everything was freshly cooked, mega tasty and we all shared delicious food together! We also took in many sights and sounds whilst walking, finding out more about Vietnamese families, culture, living arrangements, the difference between city life and country life, seeing some temples and craft streets on the way, finishing with a memorable stop on Train Street in the late evening. What a great fun tour. Thank you, Mr. Anh, for your hospitality, excellent food choices and understanding of the history behind them, and passion and knowledge about your lovely country!

Great food tour experience

Keith_D, Feb 2025
This was a perfect introduction to Hanoi food and culture. Our guide was very interactive and shared a lot of information about Vietnamese culture. We visited restaurants we would not have found on our own. We finished the evening on Train Street where our guide arranged a great spot to experience the train rolling by a few inches from our feet. Highly recommend this tour!
