Highly recommended. Our captain was passionate and knowledgable about the this natural gem, the Ria Formosa (and its islands) The Farol island has a signature lighthouse and a storybook maze like array of small cottages, the desert island is deserted, which is all one would hope for, apart from a timber clad restaurant that has a terrace for a wonderful view (and a sundowner). The sunset over the sea is one to remember.

This tour did exactly what the name promised: a relaxed small‑group trip out to Ilha Deserta and Farol Island, with plenty of time on the water and a good introduction to the Ria Formosa National Park. I really enjoyed learning about the area, especially seeing locals foraging for razor clams while the tide was low — honestly the best moment to experience Ria Formosa’s character.
Both islands have more than enough to keep you interested. You could easily spend a whole day on each, but even the short 30‑minute and 1‑hour stops we had were enjoyable. Ilha Deserta is perfect for quiet walks and long stretches of sandy beach, while Farol feels more like a tiny coastal town, with cafés, patrolled beaches, and a lived‑in atmosphere.
Most of the tour time is spent travelling by boat rather than exploring the islands, so it’s more of a taster than a deep dive. Given the low tide, I would have loved to see more birdlife, but that’s just nature’s timing.
As a convenient introduction to the Ria Formosa, it’s great. If you want to properly appreciate the islands, I’d recommend booking a taxi boat and spending half a day on each — you’ll get a much richer experience.

As described in the itinerary, this is a 3-hour guided boat tour through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, combining navigation and interpretation of the lagoon with stops of approximately 30 minutes at Deserta Island and 1 hour at Farol Island. It is therefore intended to offer an introduction to both the natural environment of the Ria Formosa and its barrier islands, rather than extended stays on the islands themselves.
For visitors wishing to spend several hours exploring individual islands, a dedicated transfer or private charter would indeed be a different and more suitable option.
We are nevertheless glad to read that the tour delivered exactly what was described and that you found so many aspects of the experience enjoyable. Considering the very positive account of the experience throughout your comments, we must admit that the three-star rating came as somewhat of a surprise to us.

It was a wonderful boat ride to the islands. Diogo was very nice and polite. He talked a little bit about fiddler crabs, sea horses and some of the birds and the ecosystem around the islands. It was not an in depth discussion but that was okay for us. The Deserta Island was wonderful. We were able to swim/walk to one of the other islands. My 13 year old loved that. We got some ice cream and walked around Farol Island. For us we would have enjoyed spending more time at Deserta Island and less time at Farol Island. Overall it was a lovely trip.

A nice way to see some of the islands and view the national park. Very informative tour guide, who was very kind to a young child onboard, and let him steer the boat. Very relaxed tour.

The guide/skipper was very knowledgeable and the boats were very good. Going in winter was a bad choice. Not much fauna and flora. Also didn't get to see much doing the main straight with 2 islands. Better to go electric and really get in-between the islands.

We had an excellent time on the small boat trip to Ilha Deserta and Faro Islands as our tour guide is a molecular biologist and true environmentalist. He was extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife and ocean as the area is a protected preserve for all
things related to the area particularly birds. I even collected intact sea shells from the beach at one of our stops. My husband and I were were pleased with our decision to take the train from Lisbon for the experience as Faro is the best kept oasis secret! I predict in a few years more travelers will discover the raw beauty in southern Portugal!

This was a great experience for me and my kids (6) and (10). The tour guide Pedro was amazing, he was kind, passionate about his job and knowledgeable - we learnt a lot about the sea life and preservation. The landscape was beautiful. It was good value for money, the only thing I would say it we could have done with longer on both islands.

This was an amazing start to our trip in Portugal. We were super late to get to the place but the team were kind enough to wait for us and also offered us a parking spot by moving there car. Can't recommend this enough! Bought as a spur of the moment and was the highlight of our holiday! Captain JC was so friendly and accommodating and his knowledge of the area and the wildlife is second to none. We learnt alot on our trips and had some beautiful views that photos don't do it justice!
