This was my favorite activity during our vacation in Puerto Rico! The guides were awesome, especially Amaury and Javier. I loved the 6pm tour because we got to see the mangroves in daylight and then got great pictures of sunset at the lagoon. The guides were knowledgeable and also excellent photographers! I loved learning about the night sky as well as the bioluminescence. This is the best experience!

  • Guest under 18 yrs of age must be accompanied by an adult.
  • The owner of the service animal must provide a Licensed Life-vest by the Coast Guard for the animal. The animal must be in total control all the time. Keep in mind that there will be many people around in the dark.
  • Guest that are not able to complete the tour for any reason will not be provided a refund of any type.
  • All guests must be able to row their kayaks by themselves. One of the requirements is that you are able to get in and out of the kayak on your own and be able to maneuver it. If you are an unexperienced kayaker we highly suggest you choose the earlier tour.

So, if you are afraid of darkness, a first time kayaker, or have small kids we strongly suggest taking the earlier, sunset trip. This way you can see where you are going, get use to the environment and sharpen your kayaking skills
  • Due to the immense popularity the Bio Bay tour, at times can get crowded. It’s not uncommon to meet up with other tour groups waiting to access the canal leading to the lagoon. There can be bumping other kayaks along the way.
  • Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary from minimal to very bright suddenly.
  • SPECIAL NOTE: We encourage our guests to not reserve the tour on the same day of arrival to the Island, including coming from Vieques or Culebra. If the FLIGHT or FERRY is delayed and the guest misses the tour the guest will not be entitled to a refund or rescheduling.
  • TOUR TIME might change depending on sunset time. If so we will send a reminder for updated meeting time.
  • This tour takes place in the water. Expect to get completely wet. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. We recommend to bring a change of clothes and towel for after the trip.
  • Tour is not canceled in rainy days. We will get wet anyways ;)
  • There are public bathrooms on-site, but they are not always in good condition. You may consider stopping in fast food before getting to the meeting site or using the bathrooms from the nearby stores/restaurants which are sometimes available.
  • Certain time of the year great amounts of sargassum (seaweed) arrive to our coasts. This can make paddling to feel like a workout. Also the natural decomposition odor might be unpleasant.

Amaury, Yadiel, and Catalina were excellent! The tour guides made sure everyone was safe, reviewed all the rules prior to departing, and ensured we received an amazing experience! They were extremely attentive and informative! It was a beautiful experience, even though we had low luminescence that night, we still had a fun time! Cannot recommend this experience enough.

The tour guides were absolutely fantastic, funny, engaging, and truly excellent at what they do. They brought so much energy to the experience and made everything both entertaining and informative from start to finish. You can tell they really care about what they do, and it made a big difference. Keep it up!

Know, the glow

Bonnie_H, Apr 2026
It gets crowded through the mangoes. It’s a lot of people that don’t know how to steer your canoe. And sometimes the current coming back is very hard with all that is still a fun experience. You will see the glow, but it definitely won’t be like in the pictures.

Great family fun

Surreal Experience

Kyle_D, Apr 2026
Kayaking through the mangroves into Laguna Grande was a surreal experience, especially in the dark. We felt safe and informed by our guides, especially Eli! Although the bioluminescence itself was slightly underwhelming (due to light pollution, cloud coverage, high tide and recent rainfall), but we found the phenomenon fascinating and would recommend other travelers see it before they leave PR.

Highlight of the trip for our two families with kids.

Jake_H, Apr 2026
Fantastic experience to cap off our week in PR. It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. We were a group of 9 with five kids, 7 to 12, and it was just the right level of challenge and adventure for them. We were worried about it being a full moon, but the tarp they brought made it easy to see the bioluminescent plankton, and the kids and adults were wowed alike. The guides were all fantastic, helpful, patient, fun and informative. We learned about the wildlife, the mangroves, and the night sky in addition to the lagoon. Couldn’t have been better. 10/10!

Second time doing the bio...

Second time doing the bio bay kayak tour with this group and both times have been awesome! All of our guides were great and very knowledgeable about the bay.

Not what we expected

Jorge_F, Mar 2026
I like to start by giving high marks for Natalia and the staff. They were very engaging with the group and were very helpful in explaining how to kayak and the dos and don’ts and the importance of safety for other kayakers. Also, the about the history of the bioluminescent bays. In the past I have experienced the bio luminescent not in Fajardo but in La Parguera which was an amazing phenomenon and experience for me. My girlfriend has never been to Puerto Rico and she wanted to experience this phenomenon and was hoping that the excursion we did in Fajardo would have delivered. Unfortunately, it came up short and was disappointing. I will give my pros and cons about the experience: Pros: • It was not difficult to get to the place and the area was very lite up and there was other business that were offering other water excursions. • I appreciate Natalia trying to contact me to confirm that I was on my way. • I appreciated the staff explaining to the non-kayakers how to kayak and they would be available to assist if someone needed help. • The life jacket came with a whistle in the event a kayaker fell of the kayak or needed help. • The staff made sure that the group of kayakers stayed together in formation through the mangroves until we made it out to the bay. • We got to kayak around the bay enjoying the surrounding areas and the beautiful skies. Cons: • Because of the full moon and we reached the site, a section of the kayaks had to be covered by a large tarp to get a better view of the bioluminescence. • We got to see a quick flash of it under less then a minute to move the tarp to the other section of the kayakers. • I was not interested in knowing more about the sky, where the Milky way or the Big Dipper constellation was. • I am not sure what was the benefit of kayaking around the mangroves at night afterwards. • If I knew about checking the Moonrise Times moon time calendar, I would have selected one of the days to experience the bioluminescence. • The company Pure Adventure Corp should have given notice to the paying customers the choice on whatever day was selected that during a full moon or when the sky is bright, the likelihood of seeing this wonderful phenomenon will be limited and a tarp would have to be used. • On your cancellation Policy, it stated: This experience requires good weather. The weather was good; however, it was still too bright and the moon was out limiting our view of the bioluminescence. People pay good money from all over the world to come see this amazing wonder. However, on a bright night or full moon, they only get to see a sprinkle. I understand businesses need to make money; however, they should also deliver on what the customers are expecting and you guys came up short. I showed her you-tube videos prior to this event and again, came up short.

Enjoyed the experience. One and Done

Jenifer_C, Mar 2026
Eli the instructor was STUPENDOUS and all the other instructors. He was the one that was helping me and Rebecca while we tried coordinating our kayaking skills. The kayaking was good but it was a bit disappointing that the bioluminescence did not occur. They covered us with a dark blanket so it can get really dark but even as you splashed in the water it was slight sparkles. The experience was cool but I wouldn't go again. For anybody looking to go, be sure to bring a change of clothes because you get soaked

I had a wonderful time...

Jill_K, Mar 2026
I had a wonderful time kayaking to the lagoon. It was very peaceful. On the way there we saw and heard many birds. Once in the lagoon we had some time before we saw the bioluminescence and it was incredible. The guides we very helpful!

Interesting

Lourdes_C, Mar 2026
It is a fun and safe experience. One must know how to kayak because you are on your own. Guides onñy show you the trails and/or help in an emergency. The instructor's chat could have been more enthusiastic. It sounded tired and matter of fact. Viator should giive the company name because there are several companiies. The name Kayak Bio Tour is of the area. We wasted time asking around where to go.

Amazing experience!

Pick Pure Adventure, you will not be disappointed!

morgan_f, Mar 2026
I am so glad we chose to experience this with Pure Adventure! Going through the mangroves while it was still light allowed us to see this amazing and unusual area, and getting to the bay before all the other groups allowed for some quiet time. If you go, you will get wet, and you will have to pay attention and paddle. Totally worth it and I highly recommend. Amaury, Eli, Michael, Felix and Javier were all great.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Hello morgan_f, Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. It does make a difference when you get to enjoy the mangrove forest during sunset time. I'm glad that you loved it. Great recommendations too ;) We hope to see you again. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Wonderful experience

Rosie_P, Mar 2026
We knew that we were going on the tour that we possibly would not see anything because of the moonlight. Once hit the bay our guides hooked us together and had us place tarps over our heads allowing us to see the flagalettes(sp). I appreciated that their care and also their excitement to have us on their tour. I had been on this tour about 10 years ago and it was sad to see how much of the mangrove has died.. but having said that I thoroughly enjoyed the trip with my family. I pray that Puerto Rico can find a way to protect, maintain this beautiful treasure. Even if it means it slows the tourism for a bit to do it. I know there are only a handful of these bays that still exist in all its glory.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Hi Rosie_P, Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us. We are super happy that you had an excellent time with us. We, and all the companies, fight very hard to protect this wonderful reserve. The mangrove forest took an incredible hit by Hurricane Maria back in 2017 and it is still recovering from that. Back then it looked like a wildfire eliminated all mangroves in the area. They have been slowly recovering since then. Hopefully with all the local efforts to protect the reserve they will recovery to its fullest any time in the future. Thanks again for your feedback and we hope to see you again. Beautiful experience

Ashley_B, Feb 2026
We took the 6pm tour, we enjoyed seeing the mangrove channel in the light on our way in and got to the bay just in time to see the end of a spectacular sunset. It got dark quickly and you could start to see the bioluminescence when you moved the water. To block out light pollution from the city, they give you a few minutes under a huge tarp to see the full brightness. You can continue to see it in the mangrove channel on your way back as you move the water. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and made sure everyone stayed safe and happy. Try to visit as close to the new moon as you can, and remember you only see it when the water moves, so put your hands in the water and move them around to see the ‘stars’ while you are out there.

This was a gorgeous, beautiful way to explore the mangroves, and see the bioluminescence. We’ve never experienced something like this before! The guides were very helpful and competent. It’s very dark, and got a little confusing when we’d pass other kayak groups, but we always felt safe. Javier and his team were terrific!

Bumper boats in the dark.

Priya_J, Feb 2026
LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE. Tours on tours were out there. Had to be under a tarp to see bioluminescence really well. The guides were really great - very thorough and knowledgeable. It was just too crowded.

Bio Bay 6:00 pm

Gregory_M, Feb 2026
We booked the 6:00 pm trip and it had 2 big benefits and one downfall. We got to paddle the mangroves in the dusk light which was amazing as well as we got to see the sunset over bio bay prior to it getting dark for the bioluminescence. The bioluminescence was not nearly as spectacular as I had heard and read about online. All-in-all it was a great time and I definitely recommend it. Tours were going out after us in the pitch darkness so the bioluminescence was probably better but they missed the mangroves and sunset

Paddling out was hard work, but it was so cool to see the bioluminescent water! Our tour guides were full of energy and enthusiasm.

Absolutely incredible kayaking experience!

Grace_M, Feb 2026
This was a wonderful tour experience! We didn’t know what to expect going in and it blew us away! We went on a perfect night where there was little light pollution and the skies were clear. The bioluminescence was amazing. Huge shoutout to Eli, Javier and all of the guides for guiding us through the dark and educating us on the marine biology. Would recommend to anyone! But would also recommend that you have some kayaking experience before signing up!

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Hi Grace_M, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are very happy that this adventure blew you away and that the guides took great care of the group. Think again

Thomas_M, Feb 2026
Overcrowded - too many kayaks out at the same time. Like bumper cars! Experienced rower but constantly concerned about flipping owing to collisionsz Bioiluminescence was very subtle. Essentially paying for night kayaking. Decently fun if you know what to expect Parking was bad. We drove in behind 3 other cars thru what was apparently the exit side (we checked later - it was NOT well demarcated.) the parking attendant was the rudest ever. After I roll down the window he kept asking me “did you not see the sign? Did you not see the sign? It says exit!” I apologize and say “I’m sorry, what would you like me to do.” He tells me to just pull forward and then calls me a “Cabron” under his breath as I’m rolling up the window! Also on the topic of too busy… tour guides were attentive but I don’t think would have known if a kayak was left behind with guide to kayak ratio! And at the beginning they were helping us adjust in our kayaks, adjusting the seat. And come to find out after it’s over he tied my partner’s life vest to the seat itself!! Took 2 minutes to get the knot out… surely a mistake but would have been a disaster if we had capsized! Overall for all the reasons above would not recommend the experience.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Hello Thomas_M, Thank you for your feedback. We would like to clarify a few things, though. There are various companies that do the tours in the area. Unfortunately, we have no control over the number of companies that operate in the area. During high season, which is warned in our website, the area can be crowded. We make sure to communicate this because we understand that not everyone is comfortable in a crowd, and it is the guests decision whether to book or not under these circumstances. Before going out, we have a safety briefing during which all instructions including explaining the lights on our kayaks are discussed. All our kayaks have lights in the front and the back to allow guests to follow the group and guides to keep track of the people in the group. We always have a guide in the front and a guide in the back for safety, additional to the others in the middle. In fact, in 19 years of operations through the whole year (we are not seasonal), we have never lost a kayak or a guest. We can assure you that no life vest was tied to the kayak as it is not safe nor standard protocol. Like we mentioned, we are not amateurs. Sometimes people like to tie their life vest to their own body, which is fine. However, we’ve had guests that because of doing that once they are seated, they get tangled. Finally, we want to clarify that the parking lot guard is not tied, connected or employed by our company. This is a municipal employee. While we are sorry that you had that experience with him, the complain about him should go to the municipality of Fajardo and not us. Thank you again for your feedback. Very well-run tour. We were able to see the bioluminescence even without the tarp because of the moon phase. Clean equipment, timely, friendly guides.

Great experience

Kate_R, Feb 2026
Wonderful experience with these guys. We started at 6 pm, and it wasn't too dark when kayaking to the bay. We could enjoy wildlife and mangroves. Then the full darkness appeared in about an hour. We could see blue light in the water. It was wonderful! The team provided the tarp for better observation. But even without it, we can see blue sparkles in the water! We enjoyed it a lot. Next time will bring our kids with us. Thank you! Highly recommended
