A breathtaking hike, long drive

Sara_R, Aug 2026
The Asugante hike is absolutely breathtaking. To spend time in this area feels sacred. I loved our guide because he respected the local people and knew a lot about the plants and animals of the region. I was very disappointed some other tourists did not respect the land and jumped in one of the lakes. Make sure you have protectionnfrom the sun and dirt. We did not use horses and we did this with our 5 year old daughter in 5 hours. She loved it. We had no issues with elevation but everyone is different. The restaurant in the village had nice food and they accomodated us being vegetarian. Please respect this land. Pick up trash and leave no trace. This is a village- the hike is actually around where they live. Youll see the walls build for their animals. I must add- we had a wonderful driver thankfully. BUT the drive from Cusco is brutal. 3+ hours of constant narrow turning roads where cars are trying to pass. The roads are so dangerous. The drive back is even longer because traffic. Whole experience was pick up at 5 am, home at 730pm. You should consider if you're child really would handle the drive ok. Our kiddo struggled with the car ride, not the hike.

Great long hike for the fit!

The tour operator collected us on time, with great Whatsapp comms. Long but beautiful drive 6 hours round trip. Clean, large vehicle, with Wilson, a safe driver. Alex our guide had excellent English. He explained things well and were very pleased with him. He even lent us cash to pay for horses, as Mrs Google gave a figure 60 soles short. He took us to a cash point machine back in Cusco, so we could get some more Sol and to repay him of course! This is a hard hike, at high altitude. 7.5 miles. Don't underestimate the altitude. We, aged 57, realized we could not make the whole hike, even with a week acclimatizing. Hence, the well cared for horses, for 340 soles, for a couple. So glad we did. The horses got two long breaks one for 30mins and one for an hour or so, while we did the 7 Lakes loop. It is a long day, not helped by the horrendous Cusco traffic, but the views were amazing and well worth the effort.

Response from Host, May 2026

Thank you for sharing such a detailed review. We’re glad to hear that the communication, transportation, and organization met your expectations, and that Wilson ensured a safe journey throughout the long drive. It’s also great to know that Alex provided clear explanations and attentive support during the tour. Ausangate & the 7 Lakes route is indeed a demanding high-altitude experience, and we appreciate your honest feedback about the challenge and the value of using horses when needed. We’re happy you were able to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and make the most of the experience despite the difficulty. Your insights will surely be helpful for future travelers planning this adventure in Cusco.

My recommendation.
