This is an entertaining one hour variety show including impressive acrobatics, comedy, opera and face changing. Great for kids and nice presentation overall. Massage was included- we came early for this by an hour and were told to return only 20 min before the show’s start time, but by then lots of people were there and we waited in line for massage which of course took place during the show. Can see the show while getting massage but still would have been nicer to have it before the show started? Otherwise nice experience and be sure to pick up the tickets at the ticket booth across the street beforehand,

The show was awesome, I got the "snack" option. More like enough food for a meal for two. The tea was a very fragrant jasmine green tea.

Hi Kim
Thank you for taking the time to share your wonderful experience at our Sichuan Culture Opera Show! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the show and found the "snack" option to be so satisfying. It’s great to know that the jasmine tea complemented your meal perfectly.
We look forward to welcoming you back to experience more of Chengdu's culture with us in the future!
Best regards

I booked a VIP seating with local snacks. Arrived at the venue 30 minutes before the show. Redeemed my ticket at the ticket office in front of the venue after showing them the Viator ticket. No problems whatsoever, the ticket booth is clearly marked. I was seated with lots of time to spare and asked if I wanted fruit, local snacks or a picture in the costumes used for the show. I chose the local snacks which were plenty for at least 2 people to fill up so I would not recommend eating for a couple hours before if you go for this option. The show itself consisted of around 8 different performances which were divided by a host's speech about the upcoming performance so even when not speaking chinese you can understand the gist of what's going on. Generally would recommend the experience, especially if you choose the local snack option. I think the VIP option is worth it since the viewing area is flat and I imagine people in the back might not see the stage as well, although beware that the performance can be really loud at times.

Amazing show for all age groups, I really loved it, and it's definitely one of the highlights of my Chengdu trip. You get shown to your seat, poured Jasmin tea, given snacks if you paid for it. The hostess translates the introduction to the acts in English after presenting in Chinese. It's a joy to see the entertainers also enjoying themselves and the audience appreciating the talented performers. Would recommend for all to experience this show if and when visiting this beautiful city.

Thank you a lot for your wonderful feedback. This means a lot to us and we wish to see you again in Chengdu!

Nice show.
More than opera it is a series of various Chinese performances.
We had the vip seats that allows to see the show with a great view.
Response from Host, May 2025
We are happy to hear that you did enjoy the show, thank you for your feedback information.

No communication beforehand about how to get the tickets, usually with other bookings we get sent a message with our tickets, or a message with instructions on how to pick them up. We had to send a message before the show asking what was up and how to get the tickets we booked
Response from Host, Nov 2024
It’s a pity that you thought send a message to check how to get tickets is big trouble for you, automatically get voucher when the booking confirmed, easily use the voucher to change tickets at gate.

So many different talents presented at this show, and some truly skilled veteran performers from opera singers to musicians to acrobats. The mask-changing was amazing! We paid extra for the VIP experience and I'm not sure it was quite worth how much more expensive it was, but we definitely loved getting seats right up front -- great for photos!

It is an excellent unique demonstration of the chinese opera and your only chance to see it live in China. They present the face changing and fire spitting, some shadow theater, some acrobatics and 2 chinese opera acts in 2 hours spectacle. It is a must for culture lovers

Very lovely experience for everyone including families with young children.
A variety of characters from comedians, mask changing, flame throwing, different music types. A good 1hr show, well worth visiting. Including free flowing tea and sunflower seeds as snack.
Victoria_R, Jul 2024
Great seats, first front row, amazing performance. Must have this experience in Chengdu! VIP section offered us neck massage and dress up in costumes. Unlimited jasmine tea durimg the performance was offered!
Patryk_K, May 2024
The process of obtaining the tickets was smooth and the communication was good. The performance and the spectacle were absolutely breathtaking! I can certainly recommend it to everyone.
Camilla_E, May 2024
A thoroughly enjoyable show with traditional Chinese acts. Puppeteers, singers, traditional music and instruments, opera highlights, fantastic costumes,mask-acts and acrobats- in a casual, comfortable environment with Chinese tea and nibbles on your side table! A definite thumbs up. 👍
Hayley_C, Apr 2024
Brilliant show. Well worth the money. VIP seats are best as close to the stage to see the mask changing act which was amazing
Helen_M, Nov 2023
This was my second time seeing the Opera and it was a fantastic performance!
My only complaint was that we booked the VIP experience and one of the options was to try on the costumes and have makeup done. Unfortunately it was never specified that this had to be done early before the show. By the time we arrived, it was no longer an option. So if you want to do the makeup and costume, be sure to arrive early!
Chandan_N, Jun 2023
There were numerous mini-shows packaged into the 90-minutes, including acrobatics, shadow play, traditional song and dance, comedy show and finally the mask changers. Very entertaining even for non-Chinese speakers.
Terresa_C, May 2021
Awesome experience - fun for my whole family. We each had different things that we came away enjoying the most. We got VIP tickets and sat front and center - we also enjoyed the preshow massage and shadow puppets.
Praveen_T, Jan 2020
The whole evening was just awesome. I was provided a good seat, snacks and tea. The show has explanations in English. The show itself was amazing. So colorful. The face changing is like magic.
Definitely a must do.
Gerardo_T, Jan 2020
Excellent place, although was not in English you can enjoy the perfomances of the actors....
Ver recomendable when you are around
Feghiu_B, May 2019
We loved the tea and the show. It was also pleasant that some if the staff talked in english. If I return to China I will visit the opera again.
rachadatat, May 2019
I lked the show, even though couldn't understand some acts due to language barrier. I recommend people getting VIP seating in front rows; otherwise it will a bit far from the main stage and some audience might be blocking the view, similar to what happened in my case even though I booked the A class seating.

We had a brilliant evening watching the Sichuan Opera, the performance was almost like a variety show, different performers demonstrating different techniques. The highlights were the face changing and the shadow puppets. If you go to Chengdu, make sure you see the opera!

This was my 12 year old's favorite activity we did in China. It is very entertaining for the kids.I recommend going VIP so you can sit in front and get free massage, ear grooming brother options. My kids chose to play with puppets and see how they work. It lasts about an hour and is a fun evening. Go early to walk around the area as it is a very vibrant and happening area.

Since we live in Chengdu, whenever we have visitors, we take them here. It's an outdoor venue, but it is covered and during the winter they have mini fireplaces. I would recommend getting there early to go backstage and get made up in costume and meet the cast. Beware they will try to upsell you when you arrive or at your seat...ear cleaning, massage, etc. But definitely a must do in the 'Du!

The opera was a nice performance, HOWEVER, this was the WORST Viator experience I've ever had and I've been using Viator quite a bit. The Viator VIP option is misleading advertising / false advertising of the services provided. With the VIP upgrade, we were supposed to ... choose ONE OF THREE options: a massage, ear grooming or photo opportunity in opera makeup and costume. I chose the photo opportunity in opera makeup and costume option. After the opera staff applied the makeup, I was forced to pay an extra 100 yuan in order to have a costume. The staff had indicated to me even though I showed them the Viator voucher indicating makeup and costume that the makeup does NOT come with the costume. They said it didn't matter what the voucher said - that was their policy that if I wanted the costume, I would need to pay an extra 100 yuan minimum. I reached out to the local tour contact provided by Viator and he confirmed in an email which I still have... that I was mistaken - for the Viator voucher, it is choose one of FOUR options. I sent Viator a formal complaint via email several times and have yet to get a response from them. As I'm looking through this tour, it still says the SAME THING - choose ONE OF THREE options - I want to caution everyone thinking about the doing the VIP package to be ready to pay for the costume if you are looking to do the makeup and costume option because it's not included even if you show your voucher. And one more tip - whatever option you choose, you should plan to arrive at least 1 hour before the show starts because my other travelmates chose the massage and the theater staff said that we can get the massages after the show, but after the show, the entire theater was emptied out with no massages available. So while we had paid for the VIP package, other than the seats, we did not get any of the stated VIP options. This was a very disappointing experience. Viator needs to either sort it out with their supplier and make sure the VIP option includes makeup and costume or Viator needs to charge more to make sure costume is included or Viator needs to put a note indicating that guests will need to pay for the costume separately.

The opera is fascinating experience in Chengdu. I especially like the hand figures and the face changing. Worth a visit.
Christina J, Mar 2018
A lot of fun :D! My daughter and I especially loved the shadowplay, facechanging and acrobatics. The shadowplay was brilliant! I could easily have watched that act for hours!
The only downside was the language barrier in the 2 opera acts. We were still able to enjoy the music, costumes and makeup during those parts though :

Interesting tour. Avoid the ear cleaning before the show which is very painful.
vicsconcierge, Dec 2017
Bought 2 VIP tickets , got to theater on time , told go go ticket office across the road . Was not told it was in a different location from theater. Got tickets and went to theater . They sat us in toward the back . I said no , these are too far away. I bought VIP tickets and they told me it was near the front . They said no, you wrong . They would not make ajustments to seats . I asked for a manager to get involved . The show time started and still not seated. After a while we were finally seated near the front in the corner so hard to see half the stage. There were also 12 drunk Chinese men in front of us talking loudly and using cell phones. We could not participate in 2 of the VIP options because the show already started. We missed the first part of the show. They said we can do the face painting and photos after the show so we did that even though we preferred the others. We went to the face painting area and were told a charge of 250rmb plus more money for the photos . We reluctantly paid the 250 more and opted for no photos. The whole situation made for stressful evening and cost me twice the amount agreed , so could not enjoy the show.

The opera was very well presented with excellent music, beautiful costumes, and great humor. Highly recommended! It is especially a good program for families with children. The drawback was the language barrier.
Sandeep Y, Apr 2017
We thought the opera was great. We didn't take advantage of the photo opp as we thought we would although my husband did have the quick back massage. Had excellent second row seats. Tea was very good. We had to get to the theater and back on our own - only tickets were booked in advance so be sure to have the theater info in Chinese characters for your taxi driver as well as your hotel's for the ride back.
