The office support staff screwed up, lied, and then blamed the customer.
Isaac, the driver is the only person out of the organization I'd trust. He was super.
I texted Viator support 4 days prior to tour to confirm timing. ("My ship all onboard time is 5:30. Will that be a problem?")
They misunderstood my question, and replied that I'd be fine. (Mistakes happen, I understand.)
When Isaac realized at 11:30 am that there was no way I'd get back to my cruise for all aboard time, he made plans for my return. Instead of a 2.5-3 hour safari, I got one hour, then had to pay for a private driver to get me back to Cape Town. It cost me $211 additional for the driver that I was required to pay in cash before they'd bring me back.
I contacted the office with a copy of the driver payment receipt, explained the situation (which Isaac had already discussed with them at length.), and requested reimbursement for the expense. They SAID via text they'd reimburse me the $211. It's 10 days later and they still Have NOT reimbursed me a penny. Separately, I also requested a partial refund of the $257 tour price since I got to experience less than half of what I paid for. They refused the request.
Although I had confirmed timing ahead of time, and they apologized for inconvenience of their misunderstanding, they haven't reimbursed me a penny, and subsequently said it was my fault because I didn't specify AM or PM.
If you can find a way to get to Aquila on your own, do it. Beautiful place. Just don't use Viator to get there.
I'm VERY DISAPPOINTED on how they handled this.

For the clarity of future guests reading this, it is important to distinguish between the tour you booked and the flexibility required for cruise departures.
1. The Product: You selected a Scheduled Group Tour with fixed departure and return times. Because the vehicle is shared with other guests who expect the full itinerary, we cannot shorten the safari or alter the return time to accommodate a single passenger's cruise deadline. This is why we strictly recommend our Private Tour options for cruise passengers.
2. The Communication: Regarding your pre-tour message, inquiring if "5:30" is okay without specifying it as a strict "All Aboard" deadline (or clarifying AM/PM) limits our ability to flag potential risks. Our team responded based on standard tour operations, not as a guarantee for a specific ship departure.
3. The Reimbursement: Isaac acted quickly to arrange a third-party transfer so you wouldn't miss your ship. As this was a private service outside the group package, the cost is the responsibility of the guest. However, we take your claim regarding the reimbursement promise seriously. We are currently auditing all text logs—if a member of our staff promised a reimbursement in writing, we will honor it immediately. Please forward that transcript to our management team so we can resolve this.

I booked a daytrip to Aquila Reserve based on the good reviews and (mistakenly) assuming it would be similar to Nairobi National Park.
The day started well, the guide picked me up on time and we had a smooth ride. However, I was quickly disappointed when I realised Aquila is more like a zoo or disneyland than a proper safari.
You will be visiting the park in a big vehicle (approx. 25 people) with 2 other vehicles getting very close to the animals, which does not feel ethical. The guide from Aquila was very knowledgeable and he told us that some of the animals (elephants, giraffes) are not originally from that area and they have to supplement their diet. They also have lions trapped in a small enclosure and they feed them regularly. In addition,, animals stay all day in the desert with very little shade, which is quite sad.
I wish I had done a proper research before going to Aquila Reserve.
If you want to do a safari, please go to Kruger or to another country (Kenya, Tanzania), but avoid this place as it is not authentic nor ethical!

Many animals at Aquila are rescued or rehabilitated and therefore live in a managed, fenced environment, which is very different from a vast, open national park. For some travellers, this offers a convenient, one-day wildlife experience from Cape Town; for others, like yourself, it may feel less “wild” or “authentic” compared to a true safari in Kruger, Masai Mara or Serengeti.

This is not a review of the park which is completely amazing and worth every penny to see. I booked this as a small group tour, pick up at 9 with 3-4 people. Driver showed up at 730am and didn’t know where he was going. We got there so early that they thought we were on the morning 3hr tour. He didn’t know where to drop us at the reserve and we almost wandered into the park! LOL! When we loaded at the park there were 22 people in the big truck which was fun but def not small group
I want to reiterate that the park is amazing, the animals are incredible and everything we wanted to ever see here! Book a tour with park access and the lunch but would be careful paying for a ‘small group’

You were sold a small group tour with a 9:00 AM pick-up, yet the driver arrived at 7:30 AM – that is a significant gap and understandably frustrating.
Your driver was not fully clear on the route or where to go on arrival, which led to confusion at the reserve and even the risk of you walking into the park area by mistake.
Once at Aquila, you joined a large 22-seater game drive truck, which felt different from the “small group” expectation you had when booking.
This is not the smooth, clearly communicated experience we aim to deliver as a professional Cape Town tour operator. 💔
To clarify for you – and for future guests reading this:
Beyond Africa Safaris provides the hotel transfers from Cape Town and the booking for the Aquila day package (including lunch and the game drive).
The actual safari trucks and guiding inside Aquila are operated directly by Aquila Game Reserve. Their vehicles are typically large shared trucks (around 20–25 guests), even when the transfer part from Cape Town is sold as a small group shuttle.
However, it is our responsibility to make this difference crystal clear at the time of booking so that guests know they’ll enjoy a small group transfer from Cape Town, but a shared big-truck game drive at the reserve – unless they specifically book a private safari upgrade.
Your review has already prompted us to:
Tighten our pick-up time procedures so that the time shown on Viator and the time our operations team gives the driver match exactly, avoiding unexpected early arrivals.
Retrain our drivers on exact arrival and drop-off protocols at Aquila, so guests are confidently escorted to the correct check-in point and briefing area.
Update and refine our tour description and “small group” wording so that travellers searching for “small group Cape Town safari to Aquila” clearly understand what is small group (the transfer) and what is shared (the game drive truck).

We had the most glorious day with Joe, driving us, he was very knowledgeable and helpful.
The weather was excellent, and we were very lucky to see the huge array of animals. Lions and elephants were particularly breathtaking and so close!
The views from both the Lodge site and the park were wonderful and we could not have been treated better by everyone we met.
The lunch was most enjoyable and plenty for every different palate. We were not rushed at all and the actual park tour was very informative.

Aquilla is a private game reserve a couple hours drive from Cape Town. It is also a hotel/resort and spa. This Viator tour provided a private car ride to and from the reserve with Isaac who was a friendly, courteous driver who share a lot of information with us during the drive about South Africa, Cape Town, history and local points of interest. During the 2 hour ride on the safari truck, we saw elephants, lions, rhinos, zebra, African buffalo and other wild life. This is a good way to see these animals within easy reach of Cape Town.

We had a wonderful time at Aquila Game Reserve! The experience started with a welcome drink and buffet lunch, which was absolutely fabulous – a great way to begin the day.
The safari tour that followed was both interesting and enjoyable. Our guide, Clement, was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the tour engaging throughout. We managed to spot a good variety of animals including giraffes, ostriches, buffaloes, rhinos, lions, zebras, and elephants. It was a real treat to see them up close in a spacious setting.
While the reserve is well-maintained and the animals seem well cared for, it’s worth noting that it's not a fully wild environment. If it had been more natural, the experience would have felt even more authentic.

The animals are of course the highlight and we saw all of the big names except the nocturnal leopard. The staff made the bumpy roads into a running joke and a bonus experience for the traveler. However, If you're from a place where 55F is a pleasant day, and are visiting in the winter, bundle up anyway. The wind can easily make it feel another 10 degrees cooler. The staff clearly know this and have blankets for all, but my group was still pretty cold.

Ship was 2 hours late due to rough weather. Operator of tour met us couldn't find 2 other travellers, lost another 45 minutes and was told we missed our tour time ( witch was correct).told by Operator supervisor it was our fault so no refund . Another tour with them was offered a tour the next day ,we were not. Told they would email to us why it didn't happen due to ship being late " No Email. We sent a tex by messenger can't they at least take us to park for the lunch as itinerary stated " No Response "

We sincerely regret the inconvenience and disappointment caused by the late arrival of your cruise ship on June 25th due to rough weather conditions. 🌧️⚓ We understand how frustrating it must have been to miss the scheduled Aquila Game Reserve safari, especially when you were looking forward to this special day.
Unfortunately, as per Aquila’s strict policies, guests arriving later than the scheduled safari start time cannot be accommodated for that day’s full safari. In your case, arriving too late meant Aquila was unable to include you in the planned activity. Only in-house overnight guests at Aquila are eligible for the sunset safari on the same day of a late arrival. 🦁🌅 This policy is in place because all bookings—including transport, park fees, guides, and meals—are prepaid well in advance to secure your reservation and provide the best quality experience for every guest.
We understand that some guests on the same cruise were able to attend the safari on a different day, but unfortunately, Aquila’s guidelines limit availability for late arrivals, and we have little flexibility in these cases. We also regret that communication following the cancellation did not meet your expectations; we continue to work closely with Aquila to improve guest support and clarity.
Aquila advises guests affected by ship delays to reach out to their travel insurance providers for possible claims related to such uncontrollable events. While this does not replace the missed experience, it may help recover some of the costs. We recommend pursuing this option as part of your resolution process.
Please be assured that we value every guest and strive to provide clear information about these policies before and during booking to avoid such disappointments. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us advocate for better communication and service from our partners.

This experience was a breeze from the beginning to the end. Great communication. The driver arrived on time and was the most friendliest person ever. He was so easy to talk to; we enjoyed his conversations. I pray the best for him and his company.

Despite the nearly 200 km drive from Cape Town, our day trip to Aquila Game Reserve was absolutely worth it. Nestled in the semi-arid Karoo under the shadow of the Klein Karoo mountains, Aquila is South Africa’s closest Big 5 safari experience—and it truly delivers in many ways
James, our guide, was the highlight of the day. Knowledgeable, friendly, and professional, he navigated the landscape with ease and shared fascinating insights about the animals, their habits, and the reserve’s conservation efforts. James arrived early, kept us informed of the schedule, and ensured we stayed warm—poor winter layering or not—thanks to his stocked blankets and hot drinks .
The reserve itself is well curated. We saw all of the Big 5—lions, rhinos, buffalo, elephants, and more—though the experience felt more controlled than wild. Indeed, the lions reside in a designated enclosure, and elephants were moved before we arrived—an unfortunate miss on our part
. This setup meant the lions appeared tame and predictable, sometimes emerging on cue, lending a zoo-like feel rather than a raw, untamed experience echoing one Redditor’s observation:
“They drive you around on safari trucks and it's like – ‘ok now we are going to see the lions.’ then they open the lion area and you
Still, it was thrilling to tick all the iconic species off our list in one day, despite the lack of leopard sightings (the park doesn’t host any)
. Spotting giraffes, zebras, and rhinos added lovely variety, even if some strolls felt staged.
Visiting in winter presented a crisp dawn, chilly winds, and stark landscapes—beautiful, but biting cold. Despite blankets and hot beverages, I highly recommend extra layers, gloves, and a hat. The recommended blanket was appreciated, but didn’t quite cut through the Karoo chill .
The value proposition is reasonable—around R4,600 (~$260) for the full-day package with breakfast, lunch, and return transfers
. Food was straightforward buffet fare—adequate but not remarkable—and there was downtime to lounge by the pool or relax in the spa, which was especially welcome post-drive
Logistics were seamless, thanks to Aquila’s transport from Cape Town and James’s punctual coordination. Vehicle comfort was good, and despite the distance, there was ample time for the safari itself, meals, and lodge relaxation
In summary, this safari is perfect as a one-day introduction to Africa's iconic wildlife when time—and travel—are limited. If you want guaranteed Big 5 sightings in a day, it’s ideal. However, if you're after a completely wild, immersive safari, or expect spontaneous animal encounters—which likely means leopards or genuine, unpredictable lion interactions—you may want to explore larger reserves like Addo, Gondwana, or Botlierskop instead .
Overall, the day was enjoyable and memorable, elevated by James’s warmth and expertise. Just be sure to bundle up if you visit in winter—and know what to expect. Aquila offers an accessible safari, but the experience is curated, not raw. Loved it, but leave room for deeper adventures later.

This was an amazing tour! Our guide/driver was Ray, and he was very organized and professional. He kept us well informed regarding our pick up time and what to except on the tour. It was a long drive to the Aquila Safari, but it was well worth it. We enjoyed the buffet lunch and the 3 hour game drive. We saw 4 of the big 5 animals and enjoyed our day!

Zebras, elephants, springboks, water buffalo, antelope, rhinos, giraffes, and hippos. We went 4/5 for seeing the Big 5 (Leopards, why were you hiding???). Our guide for the drive to and from the reserve (James) was fantastic and filled the long drives with interesting information. The guide for the safari portion was great as well.
The lunch is a small buffet with rice, fried chicken, and several other choices. I really liked the chicken.
A very enjoyable experience.
