Excellent, informative and very interesting tour of several notable neighborhoods that your average tourist probably would not discover! Andrea, our tour guide and a resident of Bucharest, guided me through the following neighborhoods: Batistei; Armenian; Mantuleasa; Olari; Ioanid-Gradina; and Icoanei. Andrea explained each neighborhood, discussng key characteristics and buildings/sights along the way. We made several stops, and Andrea also provided some good insider recommendations for different restaurants in each neighborhood. An added bonus was that this ended up being a private tour, as I was the only one who booked the tour for that day. Andrea is a personable and passionate guide, and taking this tour felt like visiting each neighborhood with an insider friend rather than a regular guide. I highly reommend this tour, and Andrea as a guide, if you want to get off the beaten track after visiting the standard attractions and then explore some real and quite interesting Bucharest neighborhoods. Highly recommended!

Thank you for this nice and detailed review, John! It's great to hear you had such a great time on our tour with Andreea and we hope to see you again, on another cultural experience, next time you'll be in town!

Highly recommended, this is a tour mostly about architecture and how it was influenced and changed during history.
Ioana has a passion for culture and it shows, she was extremely knowledgeable and an absolutely lovely (I got there on Easter and she brought me a traditional Romanian cake for the holiday to try!).
If you have an interest in Bucharest's history this is the tour for you.
Response from Host, Apr 2025
Thank you so much for your kind review, Yasmin! It's been a pleasure having you on our tour and we hope to meet you again on another cultural experience next time you'll come to Bucharest!

This is a great tour to see the hidden part of the city, much quieter and very different from the big avenues and communist architecture elsewhere. We did this tour on Easter Sunday when everything else is closed, and were able to enter a beautiful church, so it was so much more special. Would definitely recommend this tour.

I was the only person on this tour, which was a bit of a shame.
The guide (Irina and second guide Alex) was very pleasant and we had a good walk around the neighbourhoods of the city centre, although it did feel a bit random at times and I'm not sure there was a planned route.
There was lots of information and I felt that I saw a side of the city that I wouldn't have otherwise experienced, so the tour was useful and enjoyable.
Response from Host, Apr 2025
Thank you for the review, Nick! Even if we have a planned route for each tour we organize, all our guides are free to slightly adapt it, as long as it is related to the story they present and the interests of the tourists. We are happy to hear you've enjoyed the experience though and we hope to see you again on another tour soon.

Liked seeing a part of Bucharest that we wouldn't have seen otherwise. Especially liked having the various styles of architecture identified and explained. Nice way to settle in before the "official tour" started.

This fascinating tour goes off the beaten path to discover the diverse neighborhoods of Bucharest, and its multilayered history. I was the only one on my tour and Elena was an amazing guide, kindly answering my many questions, incredibly knowledgeable!

This was a wonderful walking tour of Bucharest with sights that you would not see if you were out exploring on your own. Anita adjusted the tour to suit my needs for great photo locations! She is amazing and quite knowledgable. Bucharest is a fascinating place, with rich architecture, eclectic street art, and happy people. I loved all the stories that went with each stop. So much history to consume! I wished the tour was longer! By the way, 5 To Go has some great hot chocolate! Would highly recommend if you want to be enriched mentally, socially and physically!

We loved this tour and found our guide, Ioana, to be extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
we would never have found "the Gems" on our own.
I can recommend this tour.

"Hi Linda! Thank you very much for your lovely feedback! I enjoyed being your guide and I'm looking forward to seeing you again if you'll decide to pay Bucharest another visit! Hugs, Ioana"

This was a wonderful walking tour of Bucharest. Tudor was a great guide and host to his city. We had a very pleasant exchange of ideas, and he accommodated his tour to suite our needs. Bucharest is a fascinating place, with rich architecture and a stormy past. Tudor guided us through old neighborhoods, pointing out all the hidden gems, each with its own story.
I would highly recommend this tour!

it was the smartest thing I ve done visiting Bucharest - ordered this tour. 3 hours walking around the city center and enjoying the guide's speech - Bucharest became more interesting and these 3 hours gave us a lot of understanding and hidden beauty. must!

We had just arrived in Bucharest late the night before. The rest of our group wouldn't arrive until the following day. We knew nothing about Bucharest, and needed a relaxed introduction to the city. LaLa proved to be a delightful, well informed guide knowledgeable about history and architecture. Our stroll through small quiet neighborhoods tucked away among Bucharest's loud and busy avenues immediately made us more comfortable in this strange and fascinating city. She ended our tour by bringing us to a cozy restaurant for lunch. We offered to have her join us, our treat, but she had another appointment and could only stay for lemonade.
Bucharest must have been spectacular just before World War I. But 2 World Wars, 50 years of Communist dictatorship and the sudden reversion to a market economy have taken their toll. It is, to say the least, rather frayed around the edges. Nevertheless, see this remarkable city before it becomes a tourist destination like Prague and Budapest. And hope you have a guide as charming and delightful as our LaLa. Note - Because a previous Viator of Savannah, GA was booked for us by my sister-in-law, this review uses her name. My name is Dave.

What a great tour.. We had a group of six friends and no one else joined us so we had a private tour. Highly recommend this. Cheers

This was a really amazing tour. So informative and so interesting. Our guide Mircea, really loved his city and that was so evident throughout the tour. We got to really appreciate the eclectic nature of the Bucharest architecture and learn about the city. We were on this tour on the hottest day of the year, it was 45 c, and Mircea made sure that we were hydrated and comfortable throughout. He gave us loads of good advice and tips by email afterwards. I would recommend this to anyone coming to Bucharest. It was one of the highlights of our trip, well worth the money, which is an extremely reasonable price. I really can't praise this tour or Mircea enough.

Our guide, Mircea Constantin, was an amazing guide -- full of stories and knowledgeable about all the things you don't see as a typical tourist. This was a 3 hour walking tour and my husband wasn't able to walk the last hour so Mircea kindly and thoughtfully had a car from the office pick us up and drove around for the duration of the tour.
Mircea also sent us additional information on the areas we covered and took us to Share Café - very interesting establishment..
HIGHLY RECOMMEND MIRCEA!

After seeing all of the very positive reviews for the Hidden Gems walking tour, I booked it for my one free day here in Bucharest. Took a short taxi ride to meet up with my guide outside the Intercontinental Hotel. My guide Roxana immediately spotted me an let me know that there would just be the two of us. Roxana proved to be a stellar tour guide, so very knowledgeable about the small neighborhoods Mahallas that we walked through. She was extremely personable and flexible as she introduced me to the history and culture of these areas. She pointed out all of the unusual architectural details and explained about the historical significance of many of the buildings. We stopped partway at a delightful cafe Simbio on the outskirts of the Jewish quarter for a refreshing smoothie, and then had a delicious lunch at Hanu Manuc at the end of the tour. What a pleasure to have a very intimate tour with such an exemplary tour guide, I felt totally spoiled throughout. If you want to see some extraordinarily interesting and unusual sights I highly recommend the Hidden Gems tour.

Lala our guide greeted us warmly and gave us a traditional pastry. We were won over from that moment! She was born and bred in Bucharest and loved her city. Her enthusiasm was infectious. She took us on a walk around the 'Hidden Gems' of Bucharest good footwear is a must. She concentrated on the fascinating architecture of this city. There were many influences French, German, Armenian and communist to name but a few all side by side in varying states of repair but charming never the less. Lala gave us a brief history of the city in a way that was fun to listen to. We stopped for coffee on the go and ended at a delightful cafe garden where we bought delicious soup for lunch. They chatted to us throughout lunch giving great recommendations of what else to see and where to eat. The restaurant she recommended was great. Thank you Lala we strongly recommend this tour.

Very intetesting tour, got lots of information about the history of the city and architectural points of interest.

Great tour....got special VIP treatment of THREE tour guides haha. They gave me a snack and we started the tour finding hidden spots in Bucharest that most don't know about and learning about them and the history. At the end we stopped for a drink at a hidden café.

This is in my husband's name, but I am the one who took the tour. :
We had a rocky start, because we didn't spot each other outside my hotel at first, so we started 30 minutes late. And in order to take the tour I had to pay for two people, even though I was alone.
Once we got going, this was a really interesting and educational walk through three lesser unknown neighborhoods. My tour guide was super knowledgeable and very willing to stop along the way for me to take photos or visit homes or buildings that were not scheduled. She paid attention to the fact that I love old abandoned places. She noticed when my interest was peaked, and she always made sure to walk to those places, and she was very patient with all of my photo-taking she even snapped a few herself. She described the history of each place we walked by as well as the history of what it was like in communist Bucharest. She explained why so many of these beautiful mansions and homes are left to sit there, abandoned and crumbling. At the same time we saw places that were being renovated and put to use in the recovering city. We visited a lovely orthodox church, and she even took me into a renovated French victorian home that is now a busy restaurant where she helped me make reservations for that evening. We walked for a little over two hours, and it was perfect. I believe she would have walked further had I wanted to. I highly recommend this walk. It's off the tourist path, which makes it unique.

Wow. We had no idea that just off of central Bucharest is a labyrinth of streets with beautiful 19th century mansions. Many are abandoned or in deteriorating condition but you can see how lovely they once were. Others are restored or being restored. Some of
the streets were ethnic communities such as Jewish, French, and Armenian areas. The story behind this part of Bucharest is fascinating, as well as the story of how the communist system destroyed this area and left many of the residences currently in depute over who really
owns them. Our guide was wonderful. She also introduced us to a boutique restaurant where we were able to get a gluten-free lunch. By all means take this tour!!!
peter_N, Sep 2016
Our guide was so informative. She really knew her city and showed us a completely different perspective of Bucharest. great tour.
Bryan M, Apr 2016
We spent a few days in Bucharest and were absolutely blown away by it. One of the highlights was definitely this tour - we walked through streets and our guide, Roxana, really brought things to life. Lots of things in Bucharest seem to be hidden behind closed doors and not immediately obvious, so we were pleased to have a local guide to show us round. Highly recommended as it's not the usual dates and statistics, but a real insight into life in the city past and present.
Mark_G, Apr 2026
