This was probably the most disappointing of all my Beijing Tours. It wasn't disappointing because of the sites visited but because of the tour guide, Albert, who was not only disinterested in giving the tour and spent most of his time on his cell phone or talking in Chinese to the driver to the extent that the client was excluded from conversations even at lunch, to the worst part--providing inaccurate information. For example, when visiting the Summer Palace one of the attractions was the marble boat. I had read that the boat was wood and painted to look like marble but he presented as fact that it was marble. As part of the Summer Palace tour, a ride in a Dragon Boat was included in the tour, but he insisted that if I wanted to ride I'd have to pay the fare on my own and discouraged me from doing it so he could end the tour sooner. When we would go to a site he knew some of the basic script he had memorized but could not answer any questions off script. As mentioned earlier, he spent most of his time talking on the cell phone or texting and seemed put out when I would ask for an explanation of something we were seeing. Finally, it got so bad on the second day that after visiting the Temple of Heaven in a rush, and a quick walk-through of the Forbidden City, I told him I was going to leave on my own before going to lunch or the afternoon acrobatic show and other sites. I honestly could not take Albert's behavior any more! I have booked many tours with Viator but this was one of the worst private guides I ever had. The sites we visited were some of the most beautiful and important in Beijing and I am glad that I had a chance to see them and that I was well-informed enough to read about them on my own to understand their importance in Chinese history. Other tour guides that I shared this experience with couldn't believe some of the fallacies and treatment I received. This could have been the best tour and highlight of my trip to Beijing but it turned out to be my biggest disappointment. Viator needs to rethink this tour and insist that Albert not be leading any more of the tours booked through them.

I booked this tour for my son and I in April. Roy was our guide. He was excellent. He handled all of the ticketing. We didn't need to wait on any of the long lines. I was catching a flight out on the second day of the tour. Roy and our driver rearranged some of the stops and pickup time on the second day to be sure I made it to the airport on time. The tour was great. It covered everything we wanted to see in the short time we were in Beijing.
