An outstanding “custom tour” with an excellent guide for those who want to understand the multi-century history and experience of Jews in Barbados and interaction with the rest of the population. Terrific narrative, walking tour, and culmination with viewing architectural history and detailed, high quality museum information.

Tour is primarily outdoors. Bring water and prepare for heat. It was very interesting. The tour guide was knowledgeable and very open to questions. The synagogue and mikvah were worth the tour by themselves

The City is crowded but wonderful. The tour guide is knowledgeable and has a lot of patience. The Jewish part was quite informative. Had the good fortune to speak to a volunteer at the Shul. It was awesome.

Response from Host, Jan 2025

Thank you David for your review and lovely comments. We are happy that you enjoyed the Experience of the crowded city and all! Poorly managed tour makes a horrible experience

Devin_T, Mar 2024
They moved the tour time without telling us. There were supposed to be two different tour guides, one for the Jewish segment and one for the history segment, the Jewish segment tour guide didn’t show up at all so the history guide “winged” the second part of the tour without knowing anything about the religion. It wasn’t his fault but we literally knew more than him.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Thanks for your review. “We always aim to deliver a great experience, and we are gutted when we don’t meet expectations. We will use the feedback to make us better and to ensure this doesn’t happen again. This is not the level of service we strive to provide, and we’ll do better in the future. The Traveller was send a confirmation email on Sunday March 10, it never indicated two different guides one for the Jewish segment and one for the history, nor do the tour listing indicate that there are 2 tour guides. The time was never changed, the confirmation that was send to traveller indicate the 10am time, if the tour guide is at the meeting point early and some of the travelers are assemble he would do a story telling of the history of Bridgetown, until the other arrived as some of the travelers are coming from the Bridgetown Port, (which was indicated to the guide that the travelers from the ship would arrived about 10:00 am). The guide said that he did start the story telling at about 9:30am, and he might have confused the lead traveler, because the lead traveler said the tour starts at 10:00am. The tour guide that is assigned does the entire history of the Bridgetown settlement and the Jewish connection, giving as much insights as is known on the Jewish history, and the tour guide that did the tour knows about the religion, because 4-5 days a week he does tours and take the travelers to the Synagogue Historic District and answer questions. From time to time we seclude a docent (tour guide) but sometimes the docent is not available so we never tell the travelers until they are at the synagogue, that we have a guide who will answer your questions on the Jewish settlement in Barbados, why? The management of the synagogue would get in touch with us to confirm if he is available, as he is not always available for the time schedule for a tour. The tour guide said he might have let it slip that there was going to be a guide at the synagogue. The guide said they went on ahead into the synagogue, and the museum and finish the tour. “I apologize on behalf of everyone at Ruthann Discovery Tours. Until then, please accept my sincerest apologies on behalf of everyone on the team.” Denise

One of the best tours I have taken

Jeremy_F, Nov 2023
This is a walking tour in every sense of the word. No bus. No fighting for window space to take pictures. Our guide, Karen, came to meet us at the cruise terminal instead of the normal place when it looked like the ship was going to be late letting people off. Communication between us and the tour company was beyond fantastic. They started out the day before letting us know exactly what we were to do, where we were to meet and even gave us a very good description of what Karen would be wearing so we could find her. They were very quick to respond when we were keeping them informed of the possible delays. We started out walking all over Barbados, because I love UNESCO sites and most of the town is registered. She is very learned on everything we saw. She loves the island and it shows. We finished up with a very detailed tour of the synagogue and surrounding cemetery, went down into the Mikvah, and then into the museum. She showed us where "Jew town" used to be and what it is now. This was just so much more than I expected. And, like I said, we walked the entire time. Because of where we started, our 2 hour tour became closer to 3 hours and I didn't even notice the time, I was so enthralled. On the way back, we were chatting about us going to the Panama Canal next year and she took us to a plaque that was dedicated to all the Barbadans that went to Panama to help build it. This kind of detail was present the entire tour. You will not be disappointed.

Response from Host, Nov 2023

Wow! Thank you so much Jeremy for your review! We are so happy you enjoy the tour, thanks for all the questions and the interest that you wanted to know about Barbados, culture and heritage, I had the best day ever, showing you around the city, As I love UNESCO and you love UNESCO, it was a thrill. Hope to see you again on the Island!! Great Day!
