Overview

For travelers without the time to squeeze in a side trip to Pompeii, Ostia Antica—just a short train ride from Rome—is well worth seeing. But without a guide to help decipher the ancient ruins and provide context, it can be hard to understand what you’re looking at. Take in the mosaic-covered Baths of Neptune, private villas, and even millennia-old fast food restaurants on this small-group, half-day tour.
  • Ruins in context: Understand how day-to-day life operated in Ancient Rome
  • A small-group (12 people max) is perfect for those who prefer a relaxed pace and casual atmosphere

Our guide, Ali, a trained archaeologist, did a great job! She is engaging, knowledgeable, easy to understand, she gave us an excellent perspective of life 2000 years ago in Ostia Antica. The site is amazing, beautiful mosaics, not crowded at all and unexpectedly large and well preserved site. We would definitely recommend Ali and this tour.

Memorable tour with Joan.

Patrick_T, May 2026
We had an amazing tour with Joan, our multilingual guide. He was so knowledgeable and patient. Ostia is a huge site and a little off the beaten path for most tourists- really a memorable day.

Amazing Ostia Adventure

Susan_V, May 2026
We had a wonderful tour with John. He is very knowledgeable and a pleasure! Ostia is one of the most interesting archeological sites I’ve visited and I’ve been to many including Pompeii. It’s still a bit under the radar bc it’s a short train ride from city center but worth it!

Superb experience with an higlyl qualified guide

Very interesting story. An experienced guide with in depth knowledge of the Romen world. Brought with humor. Rebecca is a native speaker who managed very good to express herself.

Go to Ostia Antica

Stephen_O, Apr 2026
A wonderful historic site that offers maximum visitor access. The ruins of Ostia Antica easily rival Pompeii. The site is not heavily advertised so the crowds are small. They allow you to fully access most of the site so you really get the feeling for what it was like to live and work there. Our guide Ali was exceptional. Her knowledge really enhanced the experience

Don’t miss this!

Amy_S, Feb 2026
The sheer size of the site was unbelievable. An expert guide is a must to help you contextualize what you are seeing and Rebecca was amazing! She showed us her favorite parts and gave us enough information that we could wander the site after the tour and have a better understanding what we were looking at. Definitely visit the museum afterward to see some of the original pieces. It was super easy to get to the site and back to Rome. You’ll also want to wear good walking shoes since there is so much to see! Less crowded than Pompeii and much closer to Rome but equally as important to see!

Very nice tour to the criminally underrated place

Very nice tour to the criminally underrated place. The site is HUGE, and I just wished there was an option for a 5 hour tour! Fabio was a great guide and very kind, and explained the city very well.

Super fun and informative tour

Michael_L, Sep 2025
We had a really lovely walking tour of Ostia Antica with our guide, Camille. She was one of the best guides we had during our 2 week Italy trip. She was extremely knowledgeable about the archeology and history of Ostia Antica and very personable and friendly. We honestly had so much fun on this tour and enjoyed in more than our trip to Pompeii 2 years ago. The preservation of Ostia Antica is impressive. There's also barely any tourists there compared to Pompeii (so strange)
