Amazing historic sites with a funny, knowledgeable guide

Perfect hassle free tour to take in Herculaneum and Pompeii in a day. I booked at last minute the night before - all details received quickly. Meeting point very easy to find and our guide Vincenze kept everything running to timetable right from the start. Very well organised, less than 20 in a group and a comfortable air conditioned minibus. In fact, the driver ( another Vincenze!)noticed the air con wasn't working well enough so whilst we toured Herculaneum, he swapped to another bus. Tour guide Vincenze knew his stuff! Not just about Pompeii and Herculaneum but also included information about the history and origins of traditional Neopolitan words and history. He was very flexible on the tour and made a point of jumping to see a not so busy feature so that we didn't have to wait. His knowledge and informative chat on the bus and also around the sites was engaging and I learnt so much more than I did before. Lunch was at own expense at a shopping complex just next to Pompei, Vincenze took us in and directed us to the food court. There was a whole range of places available Pompei was amazing, my childhood history lessons brought to life! I unfortunately have a knee injury which has left me using a crutch as it is quite unstable. Pompei was a struggle but had wanted to visit for 43 years so was determined to make it round. Also very relieved we had other Vincenze as our bus driver. After seeing the driving in Naples and reading some other reviews, I was quite anxious about the trip but we were in danger with Vincenze. I just want to say a huge thank you again to Vincenze x2 for making my long awaited visit and every bit of the tour memorable and enjoyable!

Pompeii tour so good, it was like watching a documentary!

It was so fantastic having Viator take care of all the logistics of getting there from Rome. They made it so easy. The archaeological tour in Pompeii was one of the best tours I ever took (and I take a lot of them.) My guide, Amedeo with Askos Tours, is a young archeologist with big dreams and he put a lot of passion and energy into the stories and explanations. I felt like I was in a documentary for a few hours. One thing that surprised me was how big the site is, and we were only able to do a third of it. Plan on spending at least one full day there. Highly recommend!

Highly recommended 3 hours

A great tour, was glad I went for the 3 hour tour and not the 2 hours - even 3 hours was not enough. It gave a really great foundation for exploring Pompeii independently for the rest of the day. Our guide Anna Sorrento, was extremely knowledgeable and did a great job of bringing the place to life. As an archaeologist herself, having worked on digs in Pompeii her experience and knowledge was incredible. I really appreciated that Anna took time at the end to suggest where we should go in the afternoon. I would highly recommend the tour and will need to return to Pompeii to explore further.

Be prepared and be amazed

The walking is hard in that the pathways are made up stones that are uneven. Wear sneakers. It is fascinating to see the different types of buildings that have been uncovered from bakeries to cafes (?) to villas to baths, to homes. Our guide Luigi was very good and had a nice sense of humor. It was an enjoyable tour.

Vinny gave us an...

Vinny gave us an incredible overview of the sights visited. The tour group was bigger than we expected but we were able to hear him and get into the places visited. His knowledge gave us insights and background that enriched the experience. Unfortunately we had group show up with a person in a wheelchair - even thought the tour description says not wheelchair accessibly. While Vinny was incredibly accommodating I can’t help but feel that our experience was altered by that groups not honoring limitations. I’m all for accessibility but Pompeii tour is not one of those places. Even without such physical challenges the tour is demanding for older tourist. Perhaps a private tour would have been a better fit for us and worth the extra cost.

Lunch by the sea

Pompeii was wonderful, but the trip to Sorrento was amazing. Lunch by the sea was delicious, and they catered to those with special needs or allergies. They were very attentive to detail. Luca was a wonderful guide. He played photographer for us at stopping points, and he saw to it that we sampled local specialties like pastries, coffees, and lemon ice (and limoncello). What a glorious day!

Mariagrazia was our tour guide for our private tour of Pompeii. She is an archaeologist and extremely knowledgeable about Pompeii. The tour was absolutely amazing and I was overwhelmed with the grandeur of it all. I highly recommend this tour…private tour was so much better than with a group. Totally worth the price. You should ask for Mariagrazia.

Just right - perfect Pompeii experience

Our guide provided us just the right amount of information (and answered all questions), the walking route was just the right order (ended at the museum, started at the current excavation) with just the right amount of variety (saw remains of a shop, a house, a spa). The guide’s English was impeccable and he was very organized in getting us in and out of displays, keeping the group together, and keeping us moving. The tour is just over 2miles of walking with 2hrs of great information.

Combination Pompeii and Vesuvius tour

I did the combination tour with Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. After taking the guided tour in Pompeii, I can’t imagine trying to stumble my way through that amazing site without a guide. Their process is pretty easy to follow. Just make sure you’re there 15 minutes prior to the departure and everything will work out fine. There’s also a place to store your luggage for five dollars a bag. The Mount Vesuvius part of the tour wasn’t too physically taxing. They provide a shuttle and a guide for that as well. I would definitely recommend this to family and friends.
