Fantastic - even in the rain!

Our day trip to Pompei was terrific. Let me start by sharing that it rained almost the entire day, but everyone we came in contact with in regards to our tour could not do enough to overcome the weather and insure we had an amazing experience. Our driver, Giacomo, communicated with us from the moment he set out to pick us up. He shared many of the sites and highlights of the country as we traveled through the different cities, he even offered to pull over at one point for our morning espresso. Once we arrived at the meeting point, we met up with our tour guide Viviana, who, in spite of the weather never stopped smiling and sharing her fun personality with us as she brought us through the city of Pompeii. Pompeii itself is just simply amazing and Viviana had a way of bringing the city to life - even as we navigated puddles and flowing water throughout the ancient streets. After our tour ended, our bus was waiting to bring us to our wine tasting and lunch. We were greeted with the warm Italian hospitality we have come to expect, Gabriel introduced himself to us and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal. The wine was delicious and, as a bonus, we were able to purchase some and have it arrive just as we get back home. What started out as what we expected to be a cold, dreary day ended up being a definite highlight of our vacation. Thank you.

Mind blowing experience

Our tour guide was phenomenal! He was intimately knowledgeable about the sights we visited and answered the questions the group had for him. He was also amazingly patient. He answered the same question multiple times, up to three or four times. I swear he had to have repaeated the tour narrative twice at minimum. He truly was trying to keep a group distracted adults together. He mentioned three times when and where to meet if we got separated from the group. Even then we lost a couple of people and narrowly made our connecting trains as a result. But the tour guide saved the day by contacting a colleague who located and transported the lost people to our location. He is truly a wonderful man who expertly handled a degeret group. Wish I had the time to chat with him after the tour, but the trains wait for no one.

Great Family Tour

The ride to Pompeii was long but worth the trip. It was the best tour my family group of 5 had during our 12 day visit to Italy. We met for check in and met our driver, Lucas. There is a cafe just across from the checkin location so some of us got coffee. Lucas divided the 14 tourist into two groups of 7. The other two tourist on our van were a couple we met during the checkin process and we all had good report. Luca was friendly and engaged with us immediately so everyone was comfortable and knew what to expect. Once we reached Pompeii, we stopped for pastries and coffee at a wonderful cafe where Luca explained the different pastries and made recommendations. After making our selections we were served outside at a reserved table. After breakfast we entered the tour site and met with our knowledgeable and friendly guide. We were provided radios/headphone so we could clearly hear our guide. Luckily we had beautiful weather. The tour required a lot of walking over uneven/rocky surfaces/rocky surfaces so we all wore comfortable walking shoes. The tour ran a little over the scheduled time and the lines for the lady’s restroom was really on due to inoperative toilets. Once back in the van we drove to Sorrento. On the ride we saw amazing views as Lucas narrated. We stoped for pictures, refreshing drinks, and souvenirs. Lunch in Sorrento was AMAZING. The waterfront views were picturesque and the food was delicious. We had a large selection of menus items. On the ride back to Rome, Lucas played some regional music and engaged us in some question/answer regarding the artists and movies the music was featured in. This made the ride back seem a little shorter. This was a great tour and I highly recommend this tour with this particular tour company, Crown Tours.

A really bad tour

Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Viator's app is not allowing me to post a 1 star review, so I changed it to 5 just to get this posted. Askos tours, the guide, and Pompeii itself seemed to be competing to see who could make a simple tour as inconvenient and frustrating as possible. It was really bad.

Three wonderful hours

I’ve travelled about a fair bit and never taken a tour before. What a revelation! My young adult daughter and I were part of a small group (18) taken round Pompeii by Mario. It was great. You meet outside the Marina Superiore main entrance - Aksos Tours sets up a little sign to the right of the gate and then puts you in groups depending on the tour you’ve signed up for. It’s very organised (as are the communications leading up to it). You’re given an earpiece to hook over your ear (no, you can’t use your own buds). This is so you can hear any questions being asked of your guide as you walk, and their answers. We went early October when Pompeii was fairly quiet but I can imagine that the ear piece is also useful in very busy periods when you all stop to look at something and your guide is talking. We did a three hour tour including the Villa which is a must. A proper house with a roof and lots of wall paintings. Mario was great, explains life in Pompeii before the earthquake 17 years before the eruption. Then life between the earthquake and the eruption, when lots of artisans flooded in to do the extensive repairs you see in red brick, and life changed for the town - more brothels and lots of fast food counters you can see intact everywhere. Then the eruption, And finally a shorter part on the excavations. We most enjoyed the stories of every day life. There is so much to see and Mario could only choose some to show us or we would have been there for three times as long. But at the end you are free to dive back into Pompeii on your own until closing time, which we did. Our only regret was that we are so used to paying for everything with our phones that we had forgotten to get out some cash to give Mario a tip which he so deserved. We were very embarrassed to have forgotten this but hope that this goes a tiny way towards saying how memorable his tour is and how much it gave us. Thank you Mario 🙏

See Pompei through the eyes of a working archeologist

Great intro to the huge Pompei site, enriched by the insights of our archeologist-guide Alex. She moved us expertly through the crowds telling us both the story of what happened in AD 79 and the expert excavations that explain how we know what happened. Highly recommend. The tour was well organized and directions to the meeting point were easy to execute. After the tour ended we spent time on our own wandering the site. Overall, I expected great things of my visit to this world famous site but was not ready for how compelling Pompei is to visit. Highly recommend.

Excellente!

Vincenzo was not only very knowledgeable regarding the Pompeii and Herculeum disasters and re-discovery, but he was patient and amusing. What a positive experience he provided for all in the group! We certainly left with full appreciation for the sites as amazing treasures, as well as appreciation for the creative knowledge possessed and practiced at the time. We think we are so “modern” and knowledgeable but a visit here proves that we are but repeating history. Vincenzo was factual, a real font of experience with the historical background that allowed us to imagine and appreciate the experience of Pompeii and Herculeum life!

Roberto was the best. We have done a lot of different tours and his depth of knowledge was outstanding. Roberto gave you a great understanding of not just the historical site but also life in Pompeii. You are missing out if you don’t hire Roberto. Money very well spent.

Excellent tour! Can’t wait to return

We had an amazing day at Pompeii. The site is bigger than I ever expected and there was so much to see that we could have been there for days. Our guide chose interesting locations and was extremely knowledgeable which meant that we were never at any point bored. I would definitely recommend the tour as I learnt so many facts that I would never have known other wise. The group was the perfect size so although we were always close to the guide, we were all given an earpiece at the start so that we could hear exactly what he was saying.

Excellent experience! Highlights were Ravello and Pompeii. We covered a lot of ground. Alessandro was a great guide and our private tour guide at Pompeii was also excellent. Highly, highly recommend. Alessandro went out of his way to voluntarily find some of the best spots for pictures.

Tour Pompeii with an expert

Fantastic in-depth tour! Our guide was archeologist Andrea and he was excellent! It took a minute to get used to his Italian accent but his English was very good. He showed us the new dig as well that is underway to uncover more of the city that was buried in ash. A lot of walking on uneven surfaces so wear your most comfortable shoes. Hat or shade umbrella also recommended.

Great experience. Transport guide, Luigi was very attentive. Subject guide is an archeologist on the Pompeii excavation team. He really covered a multi perspective regarding geographic implications, lifestyle of inhabitants and technical side of the archeologic excavation. The rough terrain and hot temperatures made for very challenging physical effort, but it was worth the effort.
