While Whitechapel may be famed for its dark ties to the Jack the Ripper murders, there’s much more to this London district than its infamous past. Today, it’s a thriving hub of art and culture, home to the renowned Whitechapel Gallery, and boasts a diverse food scene. Visitors come here to enjoy its art galleries, restaurants, and street markets, or join one of its many dark history tours.

Perched amid rolling mountains in the highlands of Cairngorms National Park, the Dalwhinnie Distillery is Scotland’s highest whisky distillery. Its copper pot stills produce a light, fresh, fruity single malt that’s known as “the gentle spirit.” The visitor center offers a range of distillery tours alongside a shop and a stylish whisky bar.

Nowhere captures the spirit of London’s Notting Hill better than Portobello Road and its historic street market. Known as the place for antiques and vintage wares in the 1940s and 1950s, the market today offers an ever-evolving array of merchandise, including street food, fashion shops, and souvenir trinket stalls. While its vibe is becoming more touristy, Portobello Road is always fun, with colorful houses, lively crowds, and an eclectic mix of whatever you want to buy.

The Albert Memorial was inaugurated in 1872, dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who passed away at the age of 42 following a battle with typhoid fever. Located in Kensington Gardens, the structure is renowned for its gilded statue of the prince and its ornate Gothic Revival design. It’s one of the city’s most impressive monuments, which is saying something.

Founded in 1838, Glen Ord is the only remaining single malt whisky distillery on the Scottish Highlands’ Black Isle peninsula. Visitors can go on a behind-the-scenes tour to see and understand the process of making a single malt from start to finish; you’ll check out the barley maltings as well as fermentation and distillation methods.

Once built to protect the medieval city of York, the well-preserved York City Walls have since become an emblematic landmark of the region and an easy-to-access point of introduction for historical York. While only three main sections of these 13th- and 14th-century walls are still connected, following the footpaths and scrambling up the ramparts remains a popular pastime.

Built in 1622, London’s Banqueting House was once part of the Palace of Whitehall, which was home to the English monarch for 168 years. The building is the last structure standing of the former complex, and it exemplifies the beginnings of neoclassical architecture. It also boasts a tumultuous history, including the execution of Charles I in 1649, which is interesting, considering that banquet houses are designed for entertaining.

A historic quarter in central Glasgow, Merchant City has a vibrant atmosphere thanks to trendy bars and restaurants, boutique hotels, and designer shopping. Extending from Merchant Square to Royal Exchange Square, this district is popular for a city stroll or people watching at a sidewalk cafe. It’s also home to the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).

Housed inside a striking sandstone Victorian edifice, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of Scotland’s most-visited cultural attractions. Works by Dali, Botticelli, and Monet are counted among its collection, alongside more eclectic items such as a taxidermy elephant, a Spitfire airplane, and a magnificent Lewis pipe organ.

The standing stones that form Orkney’s Ring of Brodgar rise out of the tall green grass and purple heather between Loch Harray and Loch Stenness. Twenty of the original 60 stones survive, and at 340 feet (104 meters) in diameter, this is the third-biggest stone circle in Britain. Thought to have been built around 2000-2500 BC, it is even older than Stonehenge.

Surrounded by leafy Bute Park, Cardiff Castle (Castell Caerdydd) boasts a history spanning two millennia. The hodgepodge castle is a jumble of different architectural styles, from the Norman-era keep to the faux-Gothic apartments. It is the former home of the prominent Bute family, who helped transform Cardiff into an influential industrial port.

Arguably one of the most famous universities in the UK, if not the world, the University of Cambridge is known as one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious academic institutions. Visitors come here to explore the centuries-old college buildings and to learn about the seemingly endless list of famous alumni such as Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, Lord Byron, and Alan Turing.

Climbing up the hillside from the waterfront, the maze of shopping streets known as “The Lanes” make up Brighton’s most atmospheric quarter. The pedestrianized area is home to more than 200 independent shops, galleries, and antique stores, along with a great selection of cafés, restaurants, and historic pubs.

While Knightsbridge is the name of the main road, most people know it as a loosely defined neighborhood between Hyde Park and Belgravia. Anfield Stadium, the Liverpool Football Club's home turf, is hallowed ground for Liverpool fans. The 54,000-capacity venue not only hosts matches, but also contains the Liverpool FC Story, a museum chronicling the club's history, and the Steven Gerrard Collection, comprising memorabilia relating to the former captain.

Magdalen College—pronounced “Maudlin”—is one of the most storied and scenic colleges at Oxford University. Founded in 1458, it’s known for its lofty Magdalen Tower, its choral associations, and the celebrated figures who once walked its halls, including C.S. Lewis, Oscar Wilde, and Sir John Betjeman.

Children’s author Beatrix Potter lived in the 17th-century Hill Top farmhouse for most of her life, and bequeathed it to the National Trust on the condition that it was left “as if I had just gone out and they had just missed me.” The farm was a huge source of inspiration for Potter, who based many of her much-loved books here.

A luxury shopping destination located just outside the city of Oxford, between London and Birmingham, Bicester Village tempts shoppers with more than 160 stores—from high-end, designer outlets to mainstream brands. Bicester Village is one of the most popular shopping destinations in England, with more than 7 million visitors each year.

For 44 years, the Royal Yacht Britannia (HMY Britannia) carried the British royal family across the high seas to destinations near and far. After retiring in 1997, the vessel took up a permanent residency at the historic port of Leith in Edinburgh. Curious travelers can visit to learn about royal life at sea, both on the yacht and at its dedicated visitor center.

The home ground of one of England’s most renowned football (soccer) teams, Emirates Stadium is a must-visit for sports fans and followers of Arsenal FC. With a capacity of more than 60,000, the football stadium is the country’s third-largest. Its size and fandom create an electric atmosphere for watching soccer games. It’s also home to a museum that traces the history of the team affectionately known to fans as the "Gunners."

The 17th-century Greyfriars Kirk is one of Edinburgh’s most historically important churches. The National Covenant was signed here in 1638, plunging Scotland into civil war. Exhibitions in the Kirk Museum document the church’s history, while the surrounding graveyard houses the tombs of notable historical figures.

You’ll find the Diana Memorial Fountain in London’s leafy Hyde Park. It’s dedicated to Diana, Princess of Wales and is meant to reflect the openness that earned her the nickname “the people’s princess.” The understated, oval-shaped fountain was constructed from Cornish granite and designed to be accessible to the public, inviting peaceful contemplation and reflection.

The turreted Scottish baronial–style Belfast Castle stands high atop a promontory overlooking the city. It was built using the fast-diminishing funds of the third Marquess of Donegall, and the castle now serves as a restaurant, wedding reception site, and events venue. A visitor center in the basement chronicles the history of the castle and the surrounding Cave Hill Country Park with which it shares the hillside, while the ornamental gardens promise stellar views over Belfast City Centre and Belfast Lough.

Strolling the halls of the National Portrait Gallery is like taking a walk through British history, as you pass images of royals, politicians, and pop culture icons. When it opened in 1856, the gallery was the first of its kind. Now, it houses the world’s biggest portrait collection, featuring more than 215,000 works. Some of the most famous faces inside include William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth II, and Dame Judi Dench.

An undisputed highlight of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Royal Naval College is both a historical heavyweight and an architectural marvel, located in a scenic spot overlooking the Thames. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren—the architect who created St. Paul’s Cathedral—though only completed after his death, the neoclassical monument’s chapels and grounds make a truly grand impression.

Go for a stroll in Glasgow city center along Buchanan Street, a pedestrianized half-mile stretch that hosts a range of shopping, bars, restaurants, and cafes. Lined by grand Victorian buildings and frequented by street performers of all stripes, this street is a popular destination for both locals and visitors looking to shop, grab a coffee, or catch some live entertainment.

Dunkeld Cathedral, perched on the River Tay's north bank, is a historic Church of Scotland site dating back to the 13th century. Showcasing Gothic and Norman architectural elements, it occupies a sacred site established around 730 AD by Celtic missionaries. Despite being partially in ruins, the cathedral is still a place of worship open to the public.

Made up of three unique performance spaces, the Brighton Dome is a pillar of the English south coast’s cultural heritage. First the stable block of a young George IV, then a World War I hospital, the 200-year-old venue is now known as a champion of Brighton’s creative scene.
