One of Ljubljana’s most recognizable landmarks, the Triple Bridge over Ljubljanica River connects the city’s historic center with the popular meeting point, Prešeren Plaza. The bridge’s three interconnected pedestrian-only pathways are the inspired masterwork of Slovene architect Jože Ple?nik and stand among his many humanist architectural gems in the city.

Congress Square (Kongresni trg) is a historically significant Baroque piazza uniting some of the city's most beautiful landmarks and attractions. The peaceful square and the tree-filled Star Park at its center is a popular place to relax like a local, while admiring the iconic Ljubljana Castle at a nearby hilltop.

A postcard-perfect landscape, with snow-capped peaks, azure lakes, rushing rivers, and shady pine forest, the Julian Alps are Slovenia distilled. Along with winter sports, travelers come for hiking and white-water rafting in the summer, plus the beauty of the much-Instagrammed twin lakes, Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. Triglav National Park encompasses many top spots.

With its enormous green dome and twin clock towers, the St. Nicholas’ Cathedral (Stolnica Sv. Nikolaja) towers over Ljubljana Old Town and is one of the city’s must-see attractions. The cathedral’s lavish interior is its biggest draw; nearly every inch of the inside is covered in art from the baroque-style frescos and portraits to the magnificent carved altar and bronze doors.

Triglav National Park (Triglavski Narodni Park) is one of Europe’s largest nature reserves, with over 340 square miles (881 square kilometers) of mountains, lakes, glacial valleys, and alpine meadows. Best known for its rocky mountain vistas and rich biodiversity, the park is an ideal spot for hiking, climbing, rafting, and other wilderness activities.

The image of the picturesque steepled church on a tiny forested island surrounded by emerald waters is what attracts most visitors to Lake Bled in the first place. Visitors flock to the Church of the Assumption to climb to the top of the belltower and make a wish. Legend has it if you ring the bell three times your wish will come true.

Established in 1774, the National and University Library of Slovenia is one of the country’s most prestigious institutions. The Jože Plečnik-designed building holds some 1.3 million books, 8,700 rare manuscripts, and major collections of Slovenian artifacts and maps, available to view in ornate exhibition rooms.

Located in Ljubljana’s cobbled Town Square (or Mestni Trg, the baroque-style Town Hall (or Magistrat was renovated with Venetian inspiration in 1719 by famed Slovenian architect Gregor Maček and houses the city’s mayor and administration. Ljubljana’s Town Hall is a popular landmark for visitors and many walking tours of Ljubljana Old Town set out from here.

With ritzy seaside resorts, sandy beaches, and nightlife galore, Portoroz is a popular holiday spot on Slovenia’s Adriatic Coast. Famous for its natural thermal pools, Portoroz draws visitors looking to be pampered at the city’s wellness spas and resorts. Influenced by Italian and Croatian flavors, Portoroz is a foodie favorite, too.

Tartini Square, a picturesque plaza at the heart of Piran, is named after local violinist-composer Giuseppe Tartini. As the city’s main square, it draws locals and tourists to open-air cafes perfect for people-watching. The square also showcases Venetian and Neo-Renaissance architecture, inviting visitors to wander and admire critical landmarks such as the Town Hall and the Court House.

Flowing through the Trenta Valley in Slovenia’s Julian Alps, the Soca (also known as the Isonzo) is one of Europe’s most beautiful rivers. The Soca River is known for its narrow, rocky gorges, hidden canyons, waterfalls, and striking emerald color, which gives the river its nickname the “Emerald Beauty.”

Crossing over the Ljubljanica River, the 13th-century Shoemaker’s Bridge connects two major areas of Ljubljana’s historic Baroque center. Redesigned by beloved Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik in 1931, the stone bridge is a popular gathering point for street artists and stallholders when the weather is warm.

The Ljubljanica River flows right through the center of Old Town Ljubljana and was once an important trade and supply route. Today, the river embankments are the heart of Ljubljana’s social scene. Lively outdoor cafes and restaurants, street markets, and picturesque buildings line the canals and tourist boats cruise up and down the river.

The Lipica Stud Farm has bred Slovenia’s famed Lipizzaner (or Lipizzan) horses amid scenic forest and pasture for over 400 years—it’s the world’s oldest and biggest Lipizzaner stud farm. Today, the farm also hosts visitors for tours, performances, and training sessions, as well as horse-drawn carriage tours of the grounds.

Connecting the Petkovšek Embankment to the Central Market, Butchers' Bridge (Mesarski Most) features a slick modern design, with slender glass walkways, steel railings, and avant garde bronze statues by Slovenian sculptor Jakov Brdar. Since its construction in 2010, couples from all over the world attach padlocks on the footbridge to symbolize their eternal love.

With pretty landscaped gardens, shaded woodlands, and peaceful walkways, Tivoli Park is Ljubljana's most popular green space. The 2-square-mile (5-square-kilometer) expanse features walking and cycling trails, mini golf courses, and playgrounds as well as important cultural institutions such as Tivoli Mansion and the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia.

Covering the southern end of Slovenia’s brief coastline, Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is the protected area that covers the Sečovlje Salt Pans. The salt pans were worked for centuries using traditional methods, making them a valued part of Slovene Istria’s cultural heritage, while a vast array of bird species also call the park home.

Perched atop a hill in Piran, the Church of St. George is a baroque masterpiece that dates back to the 17th century, adorned inside with frescoes, marble altars, and sculptures. The bell tower, a nod to St. Mark's Campanile in Venice, not only stands as an architectural feat, but also offers panoramic views of Piran and its surroundings.

Challenge your mind and test the limits of your perception at the Museum of Illusions Ljubljana. The museum—which features a series of interactive exhibits, mind-bending optical illusions, stereograms, and holograms—provides an entertaining and educational experience for all ages.

Deep in the hinterland of Slovenia’s Istrian coast lies the small village of Hrastovlje. Set among hillside vineyards, the village is mainly known for its Holy Trinity Church, which was built in the 14th century and where you can still see original Gothic frescoes—including a well-preserved danse macabre. The 3-nave church sits behind a high defensive wall from the 16th century.

One of Slovenia’s most spectacular fortresses, Ptuj Castle (Ptujski Grad) towers on a hilltop with views across the red-tiled roofs of historic Ptuj. It houses collections of weapons and armor, art, glass paintings, carnival costumes, and musical instruments, including a rare Roman tibia pipe dating to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. There are also beautifully furnished and decorated period rooms, plus special exhibitions.

Located at the edge of Triglav National Park, Kozjak Waterfall is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia. Visitors can follow the Kobarid Historical Trail through pristine forests to reach this picturesque natural wonder. The reward is a 49-foot (15-meter) -high waterfall in a moss-covered karst cave that cascades into an emerald–colored pool below.

Located inside a former medieval monastery in Ljubljana’s historic center, Križanke Summer Theatre is one of the city’s most popular spots for prestige musical concerts and theatrical productions. During the warm summer months, live performances are held in the courtyard’s romantic open-air amphitheatre.

In stark contrast to the tidy, postcard-pretty streets of Ljubljana is Metelkova, a funky graffiti-strewn enclave packed with grungy bars, nightclubs, and artist workshops inside the abandoned barracks of the defunct Yugoslav People’s Army. This fiercely anti-establishment, autonomous cultural center hosts rock and punk shows and events promoting human rights.

Housed in a restored 16th-century Renaissance castle, the Ljubljana Museum of Architecture and Design is one of the city’s most intriguing museums. The museum’s vast collection of design plans and model structures of Slovenia’s most celebrated buildings draw visitors interested in architecture and design. An exhibition of works by celebrated Slovenian architect Jože Ple?nik is the museum highlight.

Dominating Ljubljana’s skyline to the north, the twin peaks of Grmada and Mount Saint Mary (Smarna Gora are popular outdoor recreation spots for locals and visitors. Mount Saint Mary is the eastern of the two peaks and panoramic views of the Julian Alps and the Ljubljana basin can be enjoyed at the summit where you’ll also find a popular restaurant and an 18th-century baroque church.

Named after the Slovene writer and political activist Ivan Cankar, the Cankar Centre (Cankarjev Dom) is Ljulbjana’s arts and cultural hub. Designed by postmodernist Slovene architect Edvard Ravnikar, this vast complex features several performance venues and hosts hundreds of annual events such as the Ljubljana Jazz Festival and the Ljubljana International Film Festival as well as numerous conferences and other cultural events.

Take a short hike to this panoramic vista point in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps to find the best views of picturesque Lake Bled, Bled Island, and the surrounding peaks and forests. Technically, Ojstrica is the lower of two scenic viewpoints over the lake—a second viewpoint called Osojnica is a bit farther up the same trail.

The Church of St. Martin is a postcard-worthy neo-Gothic parish church, located steps from Lake Bled, which blends in with its surreally pretty surroundings. Its noteworthy architecture and art ranges from the preserved 15th-century walls to a small outdoor shrine designed by renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. It’s a working church that hosts Mass daily, and a lovely place to visit when the front door’s open.

Hailed as the mightiest waterfall in Slovenia, Boka Waterfall courses 347 feet (106 meters) down a vertical cliff face near the Soça River. The water hits the rocks below so powerfully that it constantly deepens the natural pool. From the Bovec-Žaga road above, a path leads to a panoramic viewpoint of the cascade.
