The Only Way to See Milford Sound

This was my fourth visit to Milford Sound and my first visit by air. Flying from Queenstown to Milford Sound was an amazing experience. The scenery during the flight was incredible , and flying through Milford Sound on approach provided a different perspective. I even commented upon landing that the cruise would be anticlimactic after the flight. It wasn’t. We were fortunate to see NZ Fur Seal feeding and a Fiordland Crested Penguin making its way from the sound to its nest. The flight back was even more spectacular, passing by Sutherland Falls, near Lake Te Anau, and over Lake Wakatipu. The best part: Avoiding the four-hour bus ride in each direction. I also need to mention how awesome Air Milford and Southern Discoveries were. Southern Discoveries did the cruise. The commentary was informative, and everyone demonstrated the Kiwi hospitality I expect in New Zealand (especially in the South Island). Air Milford is a top-notch organization; everyone was so friendly. Communication beforehand was easy, and you can tell their clients’ safety and satisfaction are their top priority. If you’re thinking about booking this experience, do it! A tip: The weather can’t be controlled, so plan to do the tour your first full day in Queenstown and be prepared to do it the next day or day after if you need to. I was fortunate that the tour was able to operate the day I booked.

Dan was a fantastic guide! Very attentive to the tour group preferences; he could get into deep LOTR lore with the folks who are super interested, and also talk about the history, geography, and other movies for group members less familiar with the books/ movies. Absolutely stunning day

What a fantastic experience! I got to sit in the front (one of the benefits of being a solo traveller) and she asked if I wanted to hear all the transmissions from air traffic control/other aircraft, which was really cool! The scenery was SO stunning. The flights were definitely the highlight, although the cruise was incredibly cool as well (we saw dolphins and even a penguin!!) I also appreciated how proactive the company was, reaching out a couple days before and letting me know the weather wasn’t looking good, which gave me enough time to switch around my tours, and fortunately the day I’d switched to had good flying weather!

The untouched corner

A long day but absolutely worth it! An amazing experience for my 70+ year old parents, me and my husband and our 6yr old. The coach and boat were both comfortable, knowledge of our driver enhanced the experience and the trip is very well timed so that stops are the perfect length for a refreshment, toilet break or photo opportunity. The Glacier Explorer & Earnslaw Burn 🚁❄️⛰️ Absolutely amazing! We got so close to the snow-covered cliffs, seeing the beautiful blue colours and cracks in the glacier up close — just spectacular. We had an amazing pilot too, which made the experience even better. So grateful for the wonderful memories made 🩵❄️🚁

After all the health and safety checks have been completed the real action began. After being geared up the plane ride to the jump takes about 15 mins which was a good ride with views of the lake and mt remarkable ranges. The jump it self takes about 5 mins till you reach the ground. I had a good instructor who made me feel calm. The free fall is so quick it finished before I could take it all in and the landing was so smooth.

Was not expecting the amazing views on journey with glazed roof of coach which enhanced the journey made the time go quickly. Loved the engaging coach guide, they were amazing, so knowledgeable, entertaining and related everything to what was around at that the time ... no time to doze off. Definitely an opportunity not to miss ....
