This is a flexible 6 to 8 hour day tour that combines one of the Westfjords’ most famous natural sights with an exciting off road adventure and the option to slow things down afterward. We begin the day with a visit to Dynjandi, the region’s most iconic waterfall. A short and scenic walk leads past a series of smaller falls to the main cascade, where the sheer scale and power of the waterfall really stand out. From there we continue to Þingeyri for a two hour ATV ride. The route takes us off road through varied terrain, including a river crossing and a forest section, before climbing up to the top of Sandafell. From the summit, we enjoy wide open views over Dýrafjörður before descending back toward the village. Due to the harshness of the environment, the Hornstrandir area was abandoned completely by the last of its inhabitants in the early 1950s. Since 1974 the flora and fauna have been protected and now arctic foxes, birds, seals, and plants have thrived undisturbed. This is the perfect full-day hike to enjoy all of what the area has to offer. You´ll leave by boat from Ísafjörður in the morning for Aðalvík. Continuing on foot to the abandoned settlement at Hesteyri. Once we reach Hesteyri warm drinks and pancakes will await us at the Doctors House Café. We will return from Hesteyri in the late afternoon and be back to Ísafjörður. This is a moderate hike for people in good shape. Hiking distance is about 11 km on rough ground and elevation is about 300 m.

A Heartwarming Whale Experience

Wonderful! Yes, we saw whales, and it was also a sacred and moving experience. The guide's love and knowledge of whales was contagious. It was beautiful to experience the whales through his eyes. He also let us hold baleen and see whale tail pictures to help us identify which ones we were seeing. Delightful experience! (We went in July)

Mr. Lucky’s tour

We had great tour with our guide, Mr Lucky (he said it was hard to spell his Icelandic name and people call him Mr Lucky). The drive out to the Dynjandi Waterfall was through incredibly beautiful mountain passes and valleys and interesting tunnels, and the waterfalls themselves were spectacular. There was plenty of time to navigate the waterfall area, and a variety of viewing areas for different walking abilities. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Gemlufell Farm visit and tour. The family was so gracious in welcoming us and providing history and background of the farm, answering questions, and introducing us to their animals and livestock.

Beautiful & must see waterfall

We had a wonderful trip to Dynjandi Waterfall! It’s an absolute must-see when visiting this part of Iceland. The waterfall is breathtaking, and the walk up offers stunning views along the way. A big thank you to our guide, Camilla, who was friendly, knowledgeable, and explained everything clearly throughout the tour. Our driver, Gizzly, was excellent and made the journey smooth and comfortable. The entire trip was well organized, enjoyable, and informative. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Westfjords!

Folklore and scenery

This is a small group tour where you ride in a van. Our guide, Orl, was a lovely elderly gentleman who was a native Icelander. As we were driving, he spoke into a mic and told us about the landscape, Icelandic history, Icelandic folklore, and the villages we were passing. We went to a stunning waterfall that was very high, but as it traveled down, it evolved into many smaller waterfalls. You could walk up a rocky path along it and there were cables on each side to hold on to which is good because the rocks were slippery. There were several viewing areas along the way for photos of the other waterfalls, which seemed to be another "wow" around each curve of the path. All around the landscape here there were gorgeous wildflowers. We were given an hour here which was plenty of time to explore the falls and use the restrooms. This was our first stop and it was much busier when we left. Our other stops included a beach with a long dock in a fjord, a scenic stop about a saga that took place long ago, and a town that had 1 street with a coffee shop, a doll museum, and a bookstore, the oldest bookstore in Iceland. We had about 1/2 hour here. The bookstore was great and had books in several languages. At the end of the tour, we rode through Isafjordur and Orl pointed out what all the buildings were that we passed.

Iceland Highs and lows.

A very nice, long morning. Seeing Iceland that only a small group can see easily. Our tour guide/driver Jonathan was engaging and informed. Dynjandi waterfall was spectacular. However note that at busy times the climb, to me, felt a bit risky. Not because of the terrain which is uneven but because a lot of people are tired and challenged by the climb. That is a note not a reflection of Icelandia Tours.

i thought it was fun

we did enjoy this tour - the waterfall was beautiful. we stopped by a local farm and i was able to feed the baby sheep and some large goats - the host provided a lot of different treats/drinks for us tour guide was able to drop us off at town so we could do some shopping before returning to the ship

Perfect trip! I would highly recommend booking this experience

Loved our trip out to the falls! Even though the day was rainy and cold, our guide made this experience well worth it. After our visit to the falls, the off-road portion of the trip was very exciting, and the climb ended with a breathtaking 360 view. We loved this trip and will for sure be booking it again in the future!
